Direct Belichick disciples have had issues but those who have be around guys who adapted their own methodology around how a team should be built, coached, etc...have done well. 

I think the issue with the Belichick tree is the expectation that they all become the next Belichick or even close. That’s not the goal in mind for Douglas and Gase, for me anyway.

That's the football coach in him. What differentiates his approach from Gase's is that Gase actually has a big picture view. He's playing chess, he's tackling his day-to-day duties but also seeking to "build a program" as he puts it. That's not Todd's way. He looks at each season as a singular exercise, and whatever he was given that particular year was what he had to work with. That strategy works when you have a lot of good player's already in place, doesn't when you're needing to rebuild.

I think the bigger takeaway is Joe Douglas's path back to Ozzie. Ozzie is arguably the best talent evaluator the sport has ever witnessed, and he had a ton of respect for Douglas's evaluation skills - specifically regarding OL. 

Gase is an interesting one. He definitely has the qualities and the big picture view to be a good HC in this league, but he's kind of like Lane Kiffin in many ways; everyone knows his football knowledge is off the charts and he has the work ethic to be successful, but the results just haven't been there. I feel like Miami giving him so much power early on... he was the youngest HC in the NFL when he was hired, had full control of the 53-man roster, and had not a single coach on his staff with NFL head coaching experience... in fact, it was thin on experience all together. Here, he has given up the 53-man control and has two veteran coaches in Gregg Williams and Joe Vitt who have over 4 seasons of HC experience combined. His biggest issues right now are more communication/attitude driven rather than actual mental capacity or ego... if you have a bit of that "I don't have to explain myself to you" demeanor and you're not consistently winning (see Jim Harbaugh), that can wear thin with people. At 41 years old, he has plenty of time to figure it out, but as a Jets fan you hope it'll be sooner rather than later. 

It's definitely better that Gase/Douglas are attached than not, because Douglas demands Gase's respect, and I think Gase will feel comfort in what Douglas decides to do on a personnel front.

Agreed. But at the end of the day it’s Gase’s job to coach the team JD has given him. Not make excuses, be thick headed, etc.

According to OTC we have about 51m. Assuming we cut Johnson, Roberts, Winters and Bellamy we’d have about 72m. 

Our current roster (minus the above 4)  needs a lot of work and that 72m is not going to go far. Just resigning Beachum, Robby, Poole and Jenkins would probably cost, depending on the contracts are structured, 30-40 m

Qb (2)Sam, Mike White  We might need a better backup

RB (5) Bell, Cannon, Adams, Dixon and Moore. If we can’t trade Bell, I’m ok with the first 3 or maybe a rookie

WR (7) Crowder, Enunwa, Berrios, V Smith, J Smith, Malone, Hatcher. Without Robby this is actually terrible (imo). We can’t really count on Enunwa and need more than just Crowder. 

OL (6) Edoga, Harrison, Murray, Braden, McDermot, Lundblade. We need starters at C, LT, both Gs and possibly RT  Is Beachum  worth $10m? or do we gamble that we get a rookie that can start right away?

TE (4) Griffin, Herndon, Wesco, Travis. I’m ok with the first 3

S (4) Adams, Maye, Countess, Farley. Fortunately Adams and Maye play every down but we do need to add a couple.

CB (3) Hairston, Austin, Brown. . I hope we bring back Maulet.Canady and Poole but a  day 2 pick will help.

ILB (3) Mosely, Williamson, Cashman. If healthy, these are 3 good players but we need a couple of more

DL (8) Anderson, Q, McLendon, Foley, Shepard, Phillips, Franklin-Myers, Ray. The first 5 make up a solid D Line

OLB/edge (7) Basham, B Kaufusi, C Kaufusi, Willis, Langi, Tapper, Goodman. I like Basham and Willis but we need help here. Is it worth resigning Jenkins or better to go after one of the top edges?

WR Draft class so good, I’d let Robby walk. Double dip in WR. Go after Jeudy or Lamb in round 1 and use 1 of our 3rds or a 4th on a deep threat or red zone specialist.

Focus Free Agency on OLine. Grab a Center in rd 2 or 3 of the draft.
 

Re-sign Poole. 

Re-sign Jenkins.

Mosley is a game changer & Avery will be a massive upgrade from what we had this season. We made it work with practice squad dudes. I think our ILB core is great, add a later rd talent at most.

Great idea.  Now we will have good WR but a QB with no time to throw to them. Just who will we get in FA that will replace the 4 needed OL?

Xavier Rhodes and Sammy Watkins are the two biggest names out there playing positions we may have interest in.
