Their recruiting class is absolute garbage. If MSU will sign them they should sign, most don’t have any other P5 offers.
NateDawg
The timing suggests there is obviously more to it than him retiring. Luke Fickell is the guy that would have made the most sense as a replacement in a conventional timeline.

MikeT14
Also apparently he had a 4+ million dollar bonus hit last month?

It was a $4.3 million retention bonus if he was coach as of Jan. 15. Should put a dent in how much they can spend on a replacement.

MSURacerDT55
Horrible look by Dantonio, looks like a cash grab. Fickell would be the best case scenario for them but I think Narduzzi would leave Pitt right now for the job. Terrible look all around to Dantonio and the parents he recruited and did it via Tweet at that, this is chicken *blank* move

It’s not a signing bonus, it was a retention bonus. Considering he had stayed on staff as of that date, I don’t think they have much of an argument to get it back. Dantonio can most likely point to the fact he was still recruiting and accepting commits after that day to show he was still performing his duties as head coach after that point.
