Yup. I remember when Ngata hit his knee, I said that they should sit Griffin down for the rest of the year and he needed surgery on it.

I remember quite a few people downplaying my concerns at the time ("he's fine", "it's just a sprain"). And I had to explain how ligaments get damaged and how they don't just "spring back" into shape (once stretched, they stay stretched until you have surgery - unless it is the mildest, most microscopic stretch and then a small amount of rest will heal it). With Robert, that knee bent back almost 90 degrees in the wrong direction. And that meant ligament damage. And because of the loose ligaments he had after that hit, it's why he tore the entire knee up in that playoff game.

Now...granted, this was still a QB that had a hard time with route trees and reading defenses (our RPO/Zone Read offense was designed to get the primary receiver open and he was to run if they weren't). So he still would've had to do the mental part (playbooks, film study, meeting with OC and QB coaches to go over finer things) of being a QB (which IMHO he always downplayed in favor of being in the gym), but he would've physically been okay if he had been shut down after the Baltimore game and had surgery to repair the damaged ligaments he most assuredly had at that point. It wouldn't have been as big of a rehab as it ended up being and he would've been ready by Minicamp.

There are good points in here, and I can say that few teams have gone through something like the RGIII injury, which was magnified by the trade that we made to get him.  But, as far as keeping or retaining talent, every team has to go through that.  The Ravens have a long list of players who have left to go onto other teams who they couldn't afford to pay.  They had to check out two Hall of Fame defensive players, and potentially a third.  They also had the Ray Rice drama to work through, Ozzie Newsome's struggle to draft receivers and Harbaugh having to check his ego and running an offense around Lamar Jackson, something that saved his career.

But that is why the Ravens organization is so successful year in and year out.  They had a great executive, and his replacement has been locked in for a long time.  They have a coach who was able to check his ego, unlike so many others in the NFL who have been terminated due to their own hubris.  They are able to replace free agents with the next guy up, and they learned from previous mistakes and are quick to deal with off-field issues like Ray Rice.  They have an owner who is invested and present, and who lets the people under him handle the football operations.  Washington Team Football didn't have any of that over the past two decades.

Baltimore has a talent pipeline bc they are starting a 6th round 2018 pick at LG and Washington doesn’t have a talent pipeline bc we are putting a 2019 4th round pick in to replace Flowers?

Marshall Yanda retires and Baltimore has a talent pipeline bc they sign DJ Fluker to replace him at RG?

Number of linemen drafted by Washington in the last ten drafts (2011-2020)

  1. Total Number: 1; 2011-14: 0, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 0
    G Brandon Scherff (2015 1.05 (5))

  2. Total Number: 0; 2011-14: 0, 2015-2017: 0, 2018-2020: 0

  3. Total Number: 4; 2011-14: 3, 2015-2017: 0, 2018-2020: 1
    T Geron Christian (2018 3.10 (74)); T Morgan Moses (2014, 3.02 (66)); G Spencer Long (2014 3.14 (78)); G Josh Leribeus (2012 3.08 (71))

  4. Total Number: 3; 2011-14: 0, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 2
    T Saahdiq Charles (2020 4.02 (108)); G Wes Martin (2019 4.29 (131)); G Arie Kouandjio (2015 4.13 (112))

  5. Total Number: 3; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 0, 2018-2020: 2
    C Keith Ismael (2020 5.10 (156)); C Ross Pieschbacher (2019 5.15 (153)); G Adam Gettis (2012 5.06 (141))

  6. Total Number: 2; 2011-14: 2, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 0
    C Chase Roullier (2016 6.15 (199)); T Tom Compton (2012 6.23 (193))

  7. Total Number: 5; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 0
    C Austin Reiter (2015 7.05 (222)); G Maurice Hurt (2011 7.14 (217))

Notice that middle group. They drafted Scherff, and then just three other players. Luckily, one turned into a starter (Roullier). So, up until recently, no they didn't have a talent pipeline. They are starting to, which is all to the good.

By comparison, Baltimore's drafts over the same time period

  1. Total Number: 1; 2011-14: 0, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 0
    T Ronnie Staley (2016 1.06 (6))

  2. Total Number: 0; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 0
    T Kelechi Osemele (2012 2.28 (60))

  3. Total Number: 4; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 2
    G Tyre Phillips (2020 3.42 (106)); T Orlando Brown (2018 3.09 (83)); T Alex Lewis (2016 4.32 (130)); T Jah Reid (2011 3.21 (85))

  4. Total Number: 4; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 1, 2018-2020: 2
    G Ben Bredeson (2020 4.37 (143)); G Ben Powers (2019 4.21, (123)); G Nico Siragusa (2017 4.16 (122)); G Gino Gradowski (2012 4.03 (98))

  5. Total Number: 4; 2011-14: 2, 2015-2017: 2, 2018-2020: 0
    G Jermaine Eluemunor (2017 5.15 (159)); G Robert Myers (2015 5.40 (176)); G John Urschel (2014 5.35 (175)); T Ricky Wagner (2013 5.35 (168))

  6. Total Number: 3; 2011-14: 1, 2015-2017: 2, 2018-2020: 0
    T Greg Senat (2018 6.38 (212)); C Bradley Boseman (2018 6.41 (215)); T Ryan Jensen (2013 6.35 (203))

  7. Total Number: 0; 2011-14: 0, 2015-2017: 0, 2018-2020: 0

Four things to notice:

  1. They grabbed a lineman every single year. In six of the ten years (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2020) they took two linemen. In 2018, they took three.
  2. Of the sixteen linemen then took in this time period, eight came after pick #32 in the round. In other words, they were a compensatory pick.
  3. They don't use seventh round picks on linemen. In fact, of late, with the exception of 2018 (when they had two compensatory picks), they haven't gone later than the 5th. Apparently, they feel the best value for linemen is in rounds 3-5, which makes a lot of sense.
  4. In the past two years, they took three guards. Thus their pipeline for Yanda was actually filled up. So, why sign D.J. Fluker? Because they got him on a veteran plus deal. Because they gave Fluker the minimum salary plus a bit of a signing bonus, his cap figure changed to the equivalent of a second rookie. In fact, he's the second cheapest of the foursome from a salary cap point of view. The pick was savvy because it allowed the Ravens to not force one of their rookies into the firing line when they wouldn't have a full offseason of minicamps and training camp to work with them due to COVID.

Baltimore's drafts by the numbers

  • 1996 onwards (since their "founding")
    • Fewer than seven picks: 3 times [1999 (4), 2000 (6), and 2009 (6)]
    • Ten or more picks: 9 times [1997 (12), 2002 (10), 2003 (11), 2006 (10), 2008 (10*), 2013 (10), 2016 (11), 2018 (12), and 2020 (11)]
    • Average picks per draft: 8.48
  • 2011 onwards (last ten drafts)
    • Fewer than seven picks: 0 times
    • Ten or more picks: 4 times [2013 (10), 2016 (11), 2018 (12), and 2020 (11)]
    • Average picks per draft: 9.30

Washington's drafts by the numbers

  • 1996 onwards (same timeframe as Baltimore)
    • Fewer than seven picks(**): 9 times [1996 (6), 1999 (6), 2001 (5), 2003 (3), 2004 (4), 2005 (6), 2006 (6), 2007 (5), 2009 (6)]
    • Ten or more picks: 6 times [2002 (10), 2008 (10), 2011 (12), 2015 (10), 2017 (10), 2019 (10***)]
    • Average picks per draft: 7.24
  • 2011 onwards
    • Fewer than seven picks: 0 times
    • Ten or more picks: 4 times [2011 (12), 2015 (10), 2017 (10), 2019 (10***)]
    • Average picks per draft: 8.70

(*) Baltimore selected Jared Gaither in the 2007 Supplemental Draft so in essence they had 11 picks in the 2008 draft.
(**) Washington selected Jeremy Jarmon in the 2009 Supplemental Draft so in essence they had 7 picks in the 2010 draft.
(***) Washington selected Adonis Alexander in the 2018 Supplemental Draft so in essence they had 11 picks in the 2019 draft.

So, Washington is doing better than they were in terms of raw numbers of picks (and of late, the talent targeted has been better as well). Baltimore just upped their game as well.

@Woz covered it.  Great post.  I have to re-emphasize, a potential Hall of Fame player retired.  They didn't panic in free agency or make a trade.  They drafted someone in the third round, and when they saw that the off-season would be screwed, signed a veteran to a one year contract.  They also thought two drafts ago that Yanda could be leaving soon and spent three draft choices on the line.  What we would do is wait until the final FA year and draft the replacement in the first round like Josh Doctson.

This is what I'm talking about. It's more like farming. You have to plant the seeds long BEFORE you need the crop harvested. What we do is throw the seeds down, and then wonder why we're not picking corn the next day
