TitanLegend
A theory is we knew we were playing the Browns and to avoid risking any further injury to Mariota we turned to a checkdown offense. Whether or not our offense works on a consistent basis can be argued, but one thing that can't be argued is our offense vs the Browns is the complete opposite of what it almost always has been under Mularkey, which is far more downfield passing. And even with our dumbed down offense, a little better execution and we're not sweating the game out in OT. In regards to the run game being shut down, the Browns shut our run game down last year too, and that was even before Murray hurt his foot. If we're still running that weird check down **** vs Baltimore then I'll be very surprised. But we'll see.
ragevsuall17
This is a pretty decent article breaking down just this topic. Guy does a good job of remaining objective. He touches on all the factors... need to tinker with design... players need to execute... players need to come back healthy, etc. I'll reiterate about the injuries. Mariota not being able to scramble has hampered our offense since that Houston game... especially in the red zone. He had a good game against a terrible defense in Indy.. but it shuold be no surprise that we averaged 29 ppg in the 3 games Mariota was fully healthy... down to 18 since his injury (including that outburst vs Indy). Murray being hurt has also been downplayed by many here on the board. Everyone's so excited for Henry to take over... but I'm moving the needle on him from cautiously optimistic to unsure now, and inching closer to concerned territory. He looks to bounce too many runs outside... missing holes too often... is not reliable in the pass game (as a blocker or receiver)... If we can get Mariota back to full strength, we should be good... but to reach our potential, we need Murray, Walker, and Davis to heal up as well. And thinking about about, the Dolphins Defense isn't a slouch. Neither are the Texans or Seahawks. And the Jags defense is turning heads. So we've played these very good defenses. And we aren't operating with healthy players, so yea we've struggled to be consistent. Players/Scheme/Playcalling whole team hasn't played a complete game all season. One part has been up other has been down. Even with that we managed to be in 1st in our division and one stupid ref call from being 5-2. Right where people predicted. lol
