Rome Eternals

Offense

This week we play the talented defense of Lancaster.

Strategy

We plan on running a lot of hurry up offense based on getting the ball in our play makers hands.  Run heavy offense up the gut while using our dual threat RB together

Running game.

As mentioned earlier, we plan on doing most of our running inside today. We still have BDL premier offensive line and look to use it accordingly    Most of our runs are headed towards Javon Kinlaw who has really struggled thus far in his nfl career with plays directly at him..   We also are going to run read options with Herbert to help against the aggressiveness of Watt and Bosa.   With likely man coverage, no one will be with the qb if the edges come in which should lead to some nice chunk runs. We also plan on putting our RB in motion and hitting some swing passes to utilize our RB past catching abilities as well as get then in space.  Waddle also gets some run on jet sweeps with swift the secondary option running the opposite way. We plan on running a two TE scheme with both RB approximately 10-15 % of the time with Howard serving as TE two. Sometimes it'll be dual TE on one side, sometimes we'll flank one out, especially if Mychal Walker is lb 3 for Lancaster this week as he's virtually been benched in Atlanta this season.

Passing game

We're going to have a longer write update cause of some what ifs

We think after trading for another corner, Lancaster is going to come out in man

Luckily for us, we have a WR that has a great recent history against the Lancaster corners, Amari Cooper.  If jaire Alexander is on Amari Cooper we are going to target that matchup endlessly. The last time these two met, Cooper had 10 catches for 201 yards when matched up against Alexander.   Ramsey did better against Cooper the last time they played allowing just 8 catches for 57 yards but he also didn't purely have shadow duty on Cooper.

We will rotate to find whoever Ramsey is assigned to if not Cooper by cycling in our other wr early in order to get the matchup we crave against Alexander. If Ramsey has been assigned Cooper, we likely will start Waddle more instead of Renfrow who owned Ramsey earlier this year, even though he won't be anywhere near our first read

Regardless of the CB coverage we are planning on scooting out swift and Harris in motion to get some one on ones on the outside. Thomas will get a fair amount of targets to. We'll use rub routes with the outside wr running a drag and the flanked RB running a wheel to get the separation we need down the sideline.

For longer down and distances we are going five wide. This is going to force Lancaster into a zone based defense or if not we are going to target their fourth and fifth corners.  We will bunch up and hit some seams, floods and occasion wr screens from the five wide

RPO

As mentioned before we are going to put the RB in motion a fair amount to give us a swing pass quick read if no lb goes with him. If one does that's gonna leave a hole where that lb just was for the inside hand off or QB option keeper.

For short yardage, three TE with Muti at fb. Harris follows the mountain for td /first down

TL/DR- control the line of scrimmage. Get ball into play makers hands. Attack Alexander if he's on Cooper, RPO

Defense

Unfortunately for Lancaster, they are really hurting on this side of the ball in their offensive line.  They lost the entire left side this past week and will be starting the ghost of Jason Peters and Awreck Flowers. Both are usable players but a strong downgrade from Armstead and Nelson

For man, Out wide we are putting Humphrey on Mike Evans and Jackson on Johnson.  Jenkins gets pressed into duty this week against Pittman or Watkins. He'll likely be getting safety help shaded his direction.  George Kittle is also hobbled this week after getting a calf injury last week. Luckily we have perhaps the best LB in football in Matt Milano to cover him. LvE or Jackson gets the RB out of the backfield depending on what side of the field the RB lines up on for early downs with lve on longer downs

On early downs we have Jackson in the box and will rotate between a cover one man robber, cover one blitz and cover three defense.  Our goal this week is to funnel everything inside so our edges just have edge responsibility.  With a so so interior line, we want our big boys in the middle to make plays. We are willing to give up 2-3 yards to avoid any outside runs and scrambling.

In longer downs we'll switch to cover two man, stick with cover three zones and add in cover four zone for extra long.  Russell likes his deep ball.

If Lancaster is going four wide we bring in Carter and play majority cover three and cover two zones while sprinkling in cover two man. Safeties deep, keeping everything in front while making them earn it.  We don't think they have the running game to punch in td from the red zone

Up front we will rotate our line with fresh bodies consistently. While we aren't too heavy we have 8 start able players so we can keep running fresh bodies out there. As mentioned earlier we are playing edge responsibility to keep Russell in the pocket and not allowing him to extend plays.  If fournette stays in to block more often than not we will start blitzing more heavily with Jackson or lve. Campbell comes into play the middle and be the run stuffer he is at lb for short yardage

TL/DR: lock down Evans with Humphrey and Kittle with Milano. Help other corners when possible. Maintain edges and force everything inside, no Russell escaping.

Lancaster Werewolves

Lancaster Offensive Strategy:

We want to lean more on the passing game this week and luckily for us, we’re getting back Diontae Johnson and Curtis Samuel, two nice receiving options for us. Rome has a good secondary but we think we can still have success against them by spreading the ball around and attacking all over the field. We’re going up tempo and using a heavy rotation of our skill position players to keep our guys fresh and gas out the Rome defense.

We’re going to come out guns blazing this game, keeping a fast tempo as we spread the ball around to our receivers. Mike Evans will play a majority of snaps but Diontae Johnson, Michael Pittman Jr., and Curtis Samuel will rotate often between series to keep them all fresh. All of these guys are talented players who can attack every level of the field from short to deep and we’ll use them that way. We’re also going to be splitting George Kittle and Miles Sanders out wide plenty as well to get them involved in the passing game. We’re going to show lots of different looks, going 4 WR at times, using bunch formations, trips, and more. We want to use a lot of different looks and receiver combinations to keep Rome’s defense from getting too used to any one thing.

Another important part of our offensive gameplan will be using motion and misdirection to keep Rome’s defense on their toes. There will be a lot of pre-snap movement to attempt to get Rome defenders out of position as plays start. We also want to run a lot of WR and RB screens to guys like Sanders and Johnson. We want to run a decent amount of run routes to help guys gain separation.

One of the bigger challenges for us this week will be some changes to the offensive line. Luckily both of our replacements have been playing well this season but we still want to give them some extra help by occasionally leaving Sanders or Fournette in to help pass block as well as having Kittle chip the EDGE defender when he’s lined up on Peters’ side. Rome’s pass rush isn’t the scariest to begin with so we think by adding this we can mitigate whatever small issues injuries have caused our OL.

Finally, our running game isn’t the focus this week but we obviously won’t abandon it entirely. We want to attack the outside and get Miles Sanders out in space with pitches and pulling guards to block for him out there. With Fournette we want to get him going between the tackles or on the inside. We’re going to have a 65-35 snap split with Sanders and Fournette respectively.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy:

Rome has the weapons to really spread the field so we’re going to be looking to key in on the passing game this week. Jalen Ramsey will cover Amari Cooper, Jaire Alexander will cover JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Donte Jackson will cover Jaylen Waddle/Will Fuller. If they’re starting 3 wide receivers, Fred Warner will cover Logan Thomas at TE while Bobby Wagner will be covering the RB out of the backfield/blitzing if they stay in to block. If they come out in 4 WR sets, Wagner will come off the field for Trae Waynes who will cover whichever of Waddle/Fuller is the 4th WR and Warner will cover the TE/RB, whoever is left in. In 3 WR sets, Ryan will be playing a deep zone, shading towards wherever Fuller/Waddle are. In those sets, Vonn Bell will be playing in a shallow zone in the middle of the field, occasionally blitzing. In 4 WR sets Bell and Ryan will be playing deep zones, splitting the field between them to watch Waddle and Fuller’s speed over the top.

Rome has a nice offensive line but luckily we have a strong defensive line and so we expect to see some level of success rushing the passer this game. We expect tight coverage across the board so we think we can get a couple of coverage sacks on Justin Herbert in this one. At the end of the day with one of the top EDGE duos in the league and probably the top CB duo in the league, we expect that combination to lead to sacks.

We aren’t too worried about the running game in this one. If Rome is in a 3 WR set, we’ve got 7 guys in the box with our DL, LBs, and Bell, all of whom are strong against the run. In 4 WR sets, they’ll be more spread out with less help for blocking and we think our DL will hold up well. In both cases one of our LBs specifically will be watching the RB as well.

Part of me wants to be snarky and go "so you're just running the ball with Herbert all game?" but Cooper and Harris actually did something this week. Rome is dead right that Peters and Flowers aren't acceptable starting tackles in a 16 team league.

Unfortunately, with Wilson at QB, I don't think it's enough. Lancaster is one of the top teams in the league and I think they show it today.

As an aside it's hard to do the following as the refs are going to sit on the ball for a bit every time your substitute nowadays

"We’re going up tempo and using a heavy rotation of our skill position players to keep our guys fresh and gas out the Rome defense."

The biggest key here for me, because both teams have a good gameplan, good offense and good defense is Erick Flowers who is, imo, going to get manhandled in this game. That Rome Defense is going to get to Wilson a lot without even trying by destroying Flowers imo

Ereck Flowers is not playing OT for me. Hunt will go outside to RT where he played well last year and Flowers is an acceptable guard. Yeah he was a bust top 10 OT but he's a fine guard. Peters is playing great this year also but go ahead.

Did you specify that in your gameplan? If so I missed it
