It's an NFL Old-School/Throwback MYTH that Offenses "didn't score points" throughout the 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s etc.

Until doing further research I was always under the impression that NFL D's absolutely dominated the game of Football dating back to the 1950's (as the 85 Bears D once did) and/or that Offenses have always struggled to Score Points when 🏈 "was Football" and/or when 🏈 "was real" and/or when 🏈 "was tough" and/or when 🏈 "was violent" and/or when 🏈 "was truly nasty" and/or when 🏈 "didn't score points".

But I was wrong and many of us have been lied to by our throwback and old timers who've attempted to diminish the game and talents of today by telling us all how Offense is "way too easy to score points these days".

Offensive Scoring Averages
(Decade by Decade).

1950's = 21.5 points scored per game.

1960's = 21.7 points scored per game.

1970's = 19.3 points scored per game.

1980's = 20.8 points scored per game.

1990's = 20.1 points scored per game.

2000's = 21.1 points scored per game.

2010's =22.6 points scored per game.

The style of play has changed throughout the previous 70 years (and still evolving) but not much has changed throughout the years (in regards to points being scored on Sundays) and that's because throughout the 1950's and into the 2010's (70 years of database) there's only been a point scoring differential of only a (whopping) +1.1 in terms of Points being Scored per game.

And I find this to be both pretty cool and really intriguing because even my Grandpas favorite Joe Namath led Jets were lighting the league on fire as if they were the Greatest Show on Turf during our 1968-1969 SB Winning season of 53 years ago.

1968 Jets: Games of 13, 16, 20, 20, 23, 25, 26, 27, 27, 31, 32, 35, 35, 37, 47 and 48 points scored = an average of 28.8 points scored per game.

No.

I don't believe that scoring in the NFL is easier today than it was to score back in the 1950's and I don't consider our players within the NFL today as being soft because if anything I believe that if the rules weren't changed? That players of today would be leaving the field in body bags due to how fast, how strong and how truly dangerous/violent they truly are (these kids have evolved over the years).span widget

Since the only member here alive in the 50's is @vike daddy, lets focus on right now.

from 90's => 00's = 5% increase

From 00's => 10's = Another 7% increase

in 2021 the teams scored 24.8 points on average => Another 10% increase

From 90's to 2021 the growth was **24%** on average.

1950's = 21.5 points scored per game.

1960's = 21.7 points scored per game.

1970's = 19.3 points scored per game.

1980's = 20.8 points scored per game.

1990's = 20.1 points scored per game.

2000's = 21.1 points scored per game.

2010's =22.6 points scored per game.

Enough said.

They scored more in the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s then they did in the 1990s.

And they scored more points in the 1950s and 1960s than they did in the 2000s 🤭

(But you can't use the 2020s yet because it's only been two years ala too small of a sample size).

And 2021 this past year the league did not average "24.8 points" in 2021 the league only averaged 23.0 points.

1949 = 23.6 Points Per Game.

2021 = 23.0 Points Per game.

What were you saying again?

What were you saying again?

You didnt contradict a single thing I said? All you did was go back to a time before desegregation to try and prove an asinine point.

A time when NFL was what you did after you got done at the steel mill or the packing plant. Who in their right minds compares modern football to 1949 unless your agenda is stupid and you are launching a hailmary. Hell, that doesnt even work, THE HAIL MARY HADNT EVEN BEEN INVENTED.

Ya know, when throwing 25 picks an 10 game season was normal? Hell, Id bet a big chunk of those averages are defensive points.

It's worth noting Norm Van Brocklin's single game passing yard records remains unbroken.

Yup.

554 Passing Yards back in 1951 (single game).

Heck Dan Marino threw for 521 Passing Yards back in 1988 (single game) and Phil Sims 513 single game Passing Yards in 1985 (the year I was born).

The NFL has been both an Offensive Driven and Pass Happy league for quite some time now; but yet a lot of fans just don't realize it.

The undefeated Dolphins year (I say this with like 50% confidence) Bob Griese threw like 15 passes combined in the AFC championship game and superbowl, I think it's 73? 72? 74? You can look it up the AFC championship game was against the Raiders which is the team I like.
