Should GMs just draft base on the general consensus board?

Thought more about this.  I'm not surprised the graph posted earlier in the thread shows a very similar arc between the two.  The whole industry of mock drafts, rankings, etc seem to be more influenced by predictions of what teams will do rather than objective opinions of what they should do.  I'd be curious to see what sources are used to make the consensus board, and then track its evolution as rumor, inside info, etc is factored in.

I feel like you always have to be cognizant of the big board.

Famously, the 1970s Steelers had John Stallworth rated higher than Lynn Swann, but Swann went to USC so a 1st round pick was needed for him. Stallworth went to Bama AM so they waited all the way till the 4th to draft him.

Apparently it’s very hard for a team on average to beat the consensus board. You know the one that outside pundits use to grade whether something is a reach, steal, or the right value. It reminds me of how very few investors can actually beat an index fund.

Which brings me to why I’m personally bringing this up. The Tweet below does make me wonder if those scouts and FO people really need to be spending this much time on prospects. At what point are you having diminishing returns? Like investing in the stock market, should your team just do normal hours and go by the consensus board rather than their own and have reaches?

I’m sure someone has had to have mentioned this by now but the consensus big board is LARGELY made up from the inputs they get from team sources.

So this is somewhat of a chicken or the egg situation. The consensus big board if left up to the media personalities alone would look AWFULLY different if teams took a 9-5 approach and then didn’t feed them a stream of sourced info to build a consensus board around.
