19/20 picks from the past two drafts made the initial 53 man roster, with Damone Clark, +4 UDFAs.

I’d be surprised if any team could match that.

Well, we know they like their guys.

It’s pretty wild tbh, how much faith they’ve put into that philosophy.  Did you look at the total breakdown of roster by chance?

Edit: never mind. Looks like 8 of 53 came from outside. Washington, Barr, Basham, Anger, Kearse, Hooker, Fowler, and Turpin. 85% of roster is drafted or UDFA. Seems like a high %, but maybe not.

It’s definitely high for across the league.

The Cowboys are one of the best teams in the NFL at acquiring talent through the draft. But if you are going to follow this strategy, you can’t undermine it at every other turn. For example, re-signing your talent early should be an obvious goal for a team that refuses to play in FA. Also, not gutting your talent base (e.g., Amari, La’El, Randy).

Actuallty, historically, teams that draft well usually have no problem letting those high profile, huge contract guys walk because they are confident in what is behind them waiting to step up and contribute. That is what makes a team able to compete year after year after year. Like the Steelers recently. Or the Ozzie Newsome Ravens (who drafted KYLE BOLLER and still never missed a beat, winning 2 titles under his Newsome). If you draft well, you can lose a Ray Rice, or draft a Kyle Boller, or not over pay for an aged T Suggs and still stay competitive.

That has been Dallas key problem. They draft well, then want to pay everyone who turns into a decent player. That isnt sustainable (See: 6-12, 8-8, 8-8, 8-8). At some point you are just overpaying for average guys who had a good year, and preventing yourself from drafting new starters(See: Felix Jones over CJ2K, Mendenhall) or from being able to afford quality FAs who would be a great fit here (See: Just about any season with a quality pass rusher on the market after 2012).

Dallas pays their guys and drafts well...and it has been a curse just as much as a great thing.
