What would you do with Jacobs?

  1. 1. What would you do with Jacobs?

    • Re-sign him, likely for 3-4 years and top ~5-8 pay. Our O would be totally screwed without him.

    • Franchise tag him for one season, run him into the ground, then move on. We need him around but can't commit to him.

    • Let him walk, don't tie up big $ long-term for an oft-injured RB. Collect that comp pick!

He’s only 25, if he was 27-28 no way.

Elliot was 24 when the Cowboys paid him. Less professional carries than Jacobs and more dynamic a player. The age argument is weak.

For every Tomlinson, Peterson, Gore there are 10 RBs that decline in their lates 20's. Hence the reason teams don't want to pay them top dollar.

Elliot got fat and out of shape.

We are talking about 2 million a year difference. No player who signed for 2 millions is going to make an impact.

You're not taking into account guarantees and cap implications.

Once he signs the franchise tag 10 million is guaranteed. So they’re basically fighting over 5-7 million in guaranteed money over a 3 year 36 million dollar contract.

It’s just not that much money to alienate one of your best players.

there are no long-term cap implications. Jimmy G doesn’t get paid that much and everyone else already has a contract that’s worth having.

You're assuming that he and agent would agree to that? I would think he wants 20 mil+ guaranteed at minimum which is what Chub was paid. Take a look at his cap hits. 14.8 mil this year, 16.2 mil next.

The guarantee is the number that matters. Why would he take 15-17 mil, when he can play for 10 mil this season, get another tag next season with a projected 13 mil guarantee?

He's guaranteed 23+ mil or 10 mil and free agency the next 2 years.

No one is getting that kind of money anymore and I think 12-13 million is a great bargain. Josh had 2,000+ total yards in his first year with Josh, why would people think he can’t replicate that next year?

BTW I can’t wait to the games starts so we can argue about real stuff.

One reason is we downgraded the QB position and will lead to more stacked boxes which would negatively impact his stats.  If Jimmy G goes down at any point that will massively impact Jacobs as Hoyer is a super bum.

Another potential risk is if this team falls out of playoff contention by mid season, which is possible considering our lack of talent, bad coaching and playing in a difficult division, many players will mail it in.

JJ knows that his stock is at an ATH right now and he knows heading into the season without a long term contract is a tremendous risk.

The deeper this drags on into TC the more dire the situation becomes.  JJ could very well be banking on this team starting out terribly, then the front office caving to his demands in an attempt to save their jobs.

Do you know that he doesn’t have to show up until the 8 week to make a full year.

Sitting out that long and playing on the tag starting week 8 is another possibility.  Man that would be ugly on so many levels....

Can you imagine the heat JM would be getting if that happens and the team plays terribly....  His head coaching career is most likely finished for good.
