Hardman is a deep threat receiver though, he’s not great because he can’t high point or fight for the ball, but his speed has to be accounted for which is half the battle in the game of strategy.

A deep threat receiver that sucks going deep? Being fast is nice, but that doesn’t automatically make you a deep threat. At least not an effective one. Just like being big doesn’t make you good at contested catches and being shifty doesn’t make you a good slot receiver.

I don't fully disagree with the premise, but we did go out and get MVS specifically to be a deep threat when Hardman was already on roster. Now maybe this is more of a case where they didn't think he could fulfill his current role as gadget guy and take the top off the defense. But either way, the coaching staff definitely didn't seem to think he could be that guy to threaten a defense deep.

Steve Smith was unreal on jump balls at 5’9.  Josh Downs is pretty damn good at them too despite similar size. Then you have guys like Q Johnston who are merely average at it despite being 6’6. It’s all about high pointing and catching the ball away from your frame.

I just think they were hedging their bets. They lost Hill, and Hardman was on a one year deal. Needed a guy who’d stick around and keep taking the top off the defense, and MVS is at least speedy and tall with some hops. I still think if Hardman wasn’t hurt he would’ve been going deep a lot more too.

there were other issues with Hardman too and they had lost some confidence in him, so I think they were ok with letting him walk.

yeah but football is a game of strategy. Just the fact he has speed means you can’t just let him run past you, he has to be accounted for. Just like MVS for the Chiefs, yeah MVS’ hands suck, and he can’t really fight for the ball, but he’s got 4.3 speed so you have shift your coverages accordingly.

You can’t just let slow people run by you, either. Being fast doesn’t automatically command attention when the defense knows you don’t really get much action on the offense. If that were the case, then you can sign any 4.3 guy to any roster and instantly see returns as far as defenses shifting coverage.

Like, what you’re describing is any receiver in the NFL that’s fast. That’s not really unique to Hardman, nor is it a good reason to get him on the field running routes deep. He sucks at it.

EDIT: I know what you’re getting at, and it is good to have an element of speed on the field to at least keep defenses somewhat honest, but defenses smarten up to that. NE had that same issue, they thought having Phillip Dorsett outside would help space out the short/intermediate a little bit but it didn’t, because people didn’t respect Dorsett deep. He could run fast, but he wasn’t a good receiver and wasn’t getting a ton of targets. Hardman’s no different.

Moore is playing with the worst group of QB's you've ever seen and was still producing and passes the eye test. He's absolutely good.

Lazard and Hardman are the definion of JAGs

Yet somehow GW managed to go over 1000 yards and win OROY with the exact same QB's.
