Why are we still playing “Prevent” Defense in 2023?

In 2023 coaches are going for it on 4th down and 2 point conversions more than ever before. Analytics has helped coaches break out of the mold and tendencies of coaches of the past…. But we are still playing prevent defense at the end of halves and games…. Why??

Down by 3 or less and need a FG to stay alive or win the game? No problem because the other team is going to give you medium and short passes all day because they are terrified of being beat deep. Would love if someone with the ability and knowledge could run the numbers and see how often teams down 3 or less end up at least attempting the field goal. Seems like it would be at like 80%.

Everyone hates the prevent defense until Henry Ruggs catches the game winning TD vs some JAG in the Jets secondary who was supposed to single cover him…

Prevent has it’s uses. Perhaps it’s used too quickly/too frequently, but there’s a time and place.

It has its uses when you are defending a touchdown lead very late in the game. Its stupid when its 3 points or less. Kickers are too good these days. You really only have to go 35ish yards starting from the 25 to get into field goal range for most of these guys

Situationally it can always make sense. The problem is we see coaches pull it out in bad situations.

If you're up by 4+ points and the offense has no timeouts and there's under a minute to play and they have to go 75+ yards, it's probably okay to play prevent as long as you prevent them from getting out of bounds too.

But it also depends on the offense - if it's an explosive offense, I probably drop that to needing to be 40 seconds or less.

If you're up by two scores later in the 4th, your goal should be to get the ball back and be able to knee it - so playing prevent to set that situation up can make sense.

A great example of probably needing to play prevent but not is the Rams/Bucs NFC divisional round game when Evans burned Ramsey for a long TD

Brian Flores blitzes by far the most in the league. Vikings used their aggressive defense to hold Chicago to 9 points. Up 1 with 2 minutes to go. Prevent time! Bring No pressure and bears go down to kick the game winning field goal

Exactly what should be asked of Flores after that last drive.

Your guess is as good as mine. It never worked against great quarterbacks anyway. Elway in particular made a joke out of it. And that was when defenses were actually allowed to, you know, defend.

Now merely average quarterbacks can look like Elway against prevent defense.

If your defense is being completely neutered by the rulebook, you might as well play neutered football "aggressively" instead of neutered football with a 20-yard cushion.
