Exactly. Yes, the roster wasn’t good. Vrabel also didn’t help himself with personnel decisions over the past couple of years either. That’s why it somewhat annoys me when so many act like Vrabel is a victim and has no fault of his own in us being in the position we were the past couple of years.

i find that amidst the roster discussions there’s also been surprisingly little acknowledgement of his staff hires, which may not have been a huge factor in the ultimate decision but certainly were a factor in how badly the team’s performance declined. he started out so strong with lafleur/pees/smith and literally everyone after that ranged from mediocre to terrible. that 2020 season where he took control of the defense and produced the worst defense in titans history was an absolute mess. he spent the entire season being bailed out by the offense, and it looks even worse when you consider that he’s rumored to have forced dean pees out himself. then of course there’s the downing hire which needs no elaboration, followed by an incredibly uninspiring internal promotion at OC (i will give kelly that he was baseline competent in a way that downing obviously wasn’t, but the hire itself was incredibly lazy). and finally, the cherry on top, firing the OL coach of the worst unit in the league and then seeing fit to replace him with not just an internal promotion, but a guy who is almost certainly the single least qualified OL coach in the nfl, who had only ever coached at FCS schools before this stop. that is a really, really bad run almost reminiscent of jeff fisher’s later days.

Digging deeper Vrabel looks worst and worst with his insistence of having the roster.

Hearing he wanted Dillard.

He wanted to bring back Dennis Kelly. He wanted "his" guys.

what’s the story with vrabel and dillard? i’ve seen that claim floating around social media but nothing too concrete behind it, do you know where it comes from?

We might have seen it in similar random posts.

But the word is that Vrabel wanted to try to trade for Dillard the previous year. Once he became a FA, he was convinced that Dillard could do the job and made sure Ran went to go get him. And even with his struggles almost had to be forced to bench him.

It was mentioned somewhere on Twitter but I don't have it saved.

Lol. Cant wait wait to change up the personnel. This gives me a lot of hope that there will be concentration on replacing guys like Brewer on this roster that cant cut it. Get that O line younger and beefier.

Yes. I'm excited to stop seeing the "underdog" players take center stage.

adam peters/ben johnson combo is a hell of a glow up for the commanders. makes sense for johnson to go there, he’ll have some weapons and a shot at williams or maye

Yeah I'm concluding that he will go to Washington.

I like the idea of Callahan for some reason too. Watched the video someone posted, liked how he explained things so clearly.

I think the only "defensive" guy I would not really object to is Pierce, just because he was never a DC, so he won't feel like he has to be intimately involved in the defense. My big concern with him is who can he bring in...not sure he will have enough connections to put together a staff. All that said, I really only want an offensive guy.

Great point about Pierce and his connections. He might bring in some college guys that he worked with at Arizona State or older guys that Herm Edwards might know.

A coaches ability to build a great staff should be a big piece of the hire.

Hiring great assistants is what can take you from being a good to amazing coach.

Bill Parcells said it in the 30 for 30 doc with him and Belicheck.

"I think one of the great attributes a head coach can have is hiring good assistant coaches."
