Trenton Gill Released

Recommended Posts

I've wanted to make this thread since he was drafted. He had a small stretch early where he gave false hope and then sucked something fierce. This was obviously going to happen once CHI drafted a punter but still.

Good riddance.

I’ve been saying for a long long time he needed to be replaced, he was something like the 25th best in the league for years. Kinda awkward for him though to have been in attendance to the draft party and possibly learning there you’re gonna be unemployed soon

His Bears tombstone should read something like “He was a successful FG holder but only that.” Seems like a good kid and I expect he’ll get a chance elsewhere, but this was a done deal once we drafted Taylor.

Can we add his 900k to remaining available cap ??

There won’t be any discernible change to our cap. He was making the league minimum as a former late 7th rounder with minimal if any accelerated signing bonus money to be accounted for, and his spot amongst our top 51 contracts will be replaced by another guy also making the league minimum. When I looked at OTC the other day all the guys from like 45-55 in terms of our team’s top cap hits all had identical $950k cap hits.

Right now our cap is at 6-7m. Campbell played last season on a one year 7m deal.

Homer (2m) Borom (950) and Gil releases should get us another 4m which could be enough for Ngakoue at this point. Reports are that he is still in Chicago, rehabbed there. Kind of a no brainer for around 5m.

Ogbah (30)  is very intriguing, he is alot bigger (6'4 275)  than YN, not a one trick pony. Have no idea what kind of money he is looking for after 4/65m deal in Miami. Around 10m ?

I think a rotation of Billings/Dex/Calais/ZP/Walker/Booker/Ngakoue(or Ogbah) next to Sweat is pretty dam formidable, esp with our back 7  AND adaptable  !

Get our DE of the future in next year's Draft, (and our DT of the future if Dexter and ZP flop), use the extra 2nd to nail down C..

I'd much rather give Ogbah a whirl. If they wanted him and Campbell it can be done rather easily with a restructure or two. Ngakoue was horrendous last season. He looked done

I'd only want Ngakoue as a vet min or very near vet min deal.

The meathead in me wants to see Campbell line up at 3T and Dexter to line up opposite Sweat. With Billings at NT that is a LOT of beef to let the LBs roam and to stop the run.
