Cwmfelinfach

Mindset

There are times during the course of a season where you check the schedule, identify a killer, take a deep breath and tighten your belt. Our trip to the beef-laden hostility that is the Sin City is one of those times. We're fully aware of the challenge that awaits us, and, in this game of survival, we're pulling out all the stops. We also won't be going into Las Vegas unarmed. On the heels of a trade that saw us lose one of our top offensive weapons, we're grabbing an even bigger weapon from our bag of tricks and unveiling the newest wrinkle in the evolution of the Cwmfelinfach pfranchise: the Pitchpfork Offense.

Offense

Now, I need you smart football minds to take a step back and try to grasp the rationale behind the Pitchpfork Offense. Is it common, or even feasible, for an NFL offense to field three QBs? Absolutely not. The cap wouldn't allow it, and neither would team structure, ego and practice reps. But BDL isn't the NFL: NFL teams rarely have three QBs worth putting onto a football field, let alone starting meaningful games. With 16 teams and roster construction quirks, BDL teams are in a unique position to field resources that NFL teams simply don't have at their disposal. After Jayden Daniel's historic start, Kyler Murray's return to form and Drake Maye's promising first game, the Ptrash Pterodacyls find themselves in a position that most NFL - and BDL - franchises couldn't fathom. We feel that we have three athletic, dynamic, quality quarterbacks, and we don't feel that BDL owners are in a position to scheme against it - even a defense as formidable as the squad in Las Vegas.

Pitchpfork (base formation) (95%) - 60/40 pass/run:

BasePPF.jpg

Alignment clarification (due to my subpar Paint skills): QB1, Jayden Daniels, positions himself in a "pistol" look, 3 yards behind the center. Bijan Robinson positions himself 7 yards behind Jayden. Both receivers, Tyreek Hill and Tee Higgins, will stand on the line of scrimmage, giving the offense seven total players on the line (to be compliant with formation rules). QB2, Kyler Murray, will stand 8 yards behind Tyreek Hill to the left and QB3, Drake Maye, will stand 8 yards behind Tee Higgins on the right.

(It's important to note that Kyler Murray played college baseball at a high level for two years, and that Drake Maye grew up playing all sports, including years as a star basketball player in high school. We're comfortable that both players have that hand-eye and catching ability to thrive in these roles.)

Pre-snap:

The QB1 (Jayden Daniels) scans the defensive alignment from left to right. If the left WR/QB has only one defender covering within 10 yards, they become the initial read. If two defenders are covering, the QB1 scans the front seven for a mismatch: should he see five or fewer defenders in the box, the attention shifts to the run game. If not, he turns to the right WR/QB pairing. If that pairing also has two defenders covering within 10 yards, that means that the defense has only one safety deep: the QB1 audibles and sends both WRs on streaks, and the QB1 gets to take the deep shot to the open receiver, should it be present.

Application:

Should Las Vegas remain in their base 4-3 against this "2 WR" formation, and should one of the outside WR/QB tandems have only one defender (likely a CB) covering off the line of scrimmage, Jayden Daniels will have the green light to throw quickly (backwards) to the respective QB. Once they make the catch, they can either scramble (assuming they have space, and with the receiver blocking) or hit a weapon in the passing game, as the receivers - when not blocking - will work to position themselves in the empty spaces within the Tampa 2 coverage that the Bangers prefer to run. Bijan will also work out of the backfield as a short-yardage option. On occasion, the outside receivers will either run slants or sluggo routes, challenging the Bangers' safeties and working to keep the defense off-balance. If that outside defender (CB) is pressing, Jayden can audible at the line, pump to the QB and throw an intermediate/deep route to the respective WR, which will be schemed as a deep in or streak, depending on the safety alignment. We feel that our receivers, Tyreek and Tee, can win on the outside.

Throughout all of this, and should those options not appear ideal, Bijan will block momentarily in the passing game before providing an underneath outlet for Jayden. Jayden is also free to use his feet, should those opportunities present themselves.

On one occasion during this game, and most likely on a pivotal 4th quarter 3rd down, Jayden will pull the snap, boot towards a swinging Kyler Murray and pitch him the ball. With the defense moving towards the run, Kyler will plant and throw deep to either streaking receiver on the outside. We expect this play, the Pitch and Go 328 Blue Muffins 19 Factory Setting 9 Wally Tango, to lead to a momentum swinging yardage gain and, ultimately, a scoring drive.

Short Yardage (5% - as needed):

When needed, we'll remove QB2 and QB3 from the field, add Mike Gesicki (left) and Dillon Radunz, move Radunz to RT and Joe Alt to TE2 (right side) and run the ball from a heavy formation.

We in Cwmfelinfach believe that the Pitchpfork Offense, as uncanny as it may seem, is a dynamic alignment that works with the strengths of our roster against a defense missing impact players in the secondary.

Defense

Alignment against 11 Personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR): Nickel (3 CB)
Alignment against 12 Personnel (1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR): Base 4-3
Alignment against 10 Personnel (1 RB, 4 WR): Dime (4 CB)

Now, the less-than-exciting side of the ball: defensively, Cwmfelinfach is a wounded, ailing deer, stumbling into the Las Vegas darkness in search of shelter. It won't find any. The Bangers boast an offense with dominant, dynamic performers at each level: Lamar is a top quarterback in the league, the weapons in the passing game are dangerous, and the offensive line is dominant. Even if the RB position isn't necessarily a strength, Wright, White and Warren are quality backs behind an elite offensive line. The running game can produce.

To counter, Cwmfelinfach is forced to play it safe. Expect a mix of Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone coverage aimed at taking deep shots away from Lamar, with Sam Hubbard and Byron Young emphasizing setting a firm outside edge over attempting to pursue the elusive quarterback. We're fortunate to have added Kaden Elliss to the linebacker room: he'll spy Lamar while Pratt plays just behind the IDL in an effort to help young Wingo control the inside run. Christian Rozeboom will be the first player off the field when the Bangers add additional wide receivers to the equation.

In the secondary, Cor'Dale Flott takes the starting job from Cam Lewis, and the improving Mike Sainristil will be the first corner off the bench. (We waited on Slay's injury status: as of 11:45, he's believed to be active. Should this change, Flott would move to CB1, Sainristil to CB2 and Cam Lewis would take the CB3 roll.)

Despite the negative, Chris Jones remains Chris Jones, and, should he have another timely, disruptive play up his sleeve, a forced second-half turnover would do wonders in slowing the Bangers down and positioning Cwmfelinfach to try and find an edge in what profiles as a potential high-scoring affair.

Summary

Cwmfelinfach views this trip into Vegas as a rare opportunity to catch a superior opponent off-guard by using a drastically different, dynamic offensive scheme that preys on the few defensive weaknesses the Bangers have while keeping the ball in the hands of the explosive Ptrash Pterodactyl athletes. Should Lamar choose Week 7 to have his infrequent off-game, it's within the realm of possibility that the underdog steals this one on the road.

Chapter 6: A Pleasant Jaunt to Greenland

The Bang Bros had so enjoyed their time in Greenland that they stayed the entire week to train with the remnants of the Polar Bear forces that they now called friends. They had truly relished and dill-ighted in the friendship excursion to the great northern isle. So much so that it was not until early Saturday morning, that they departed from the port of Sisimiut.

The Flying Beefman, the flagship of the Banger fleet, churned through the waters like a knife through butter and Greenland became a speck on the horizon behind them. Heavy footsteps and the rattle of gold chains alerted IR of the arrival of BB at the bow of the ship.

“I expected Greenland to be lush for the plundering, not an icicle,” BB decried as he savored the mattak Pickle had sent along for their journey home.

“Did you not watch the Ducks at the Junior Goodwill Games? Iceland is the one that is green,” IR replied as he steered.

“Ancient history bores me, you know that.”

“Gordon Bombay scored 198 goals that season, but whatever slander ancient heroes all you want,” IR retorted.

Suddenly, “Ahoy, AHOY” rang out from the Crow’s Nest.

“Sink Me, it’s the Komodithrax”

“Quiet your grumbling Quartermaster Nelson or no more whale blubber for you,” BB stated stoically.

Then turning to IR, BB whispered “What is the Cancun dreadnought doing here. We aren’t scheduled to fight them this week.”

“LOAD THE CANNONS, BE PREPARED TO FIRE” IR yelled and steered the helm to come up beside the dreadnought before them.

“Stow the guns lads, we aren’t here to fight,” Prince Mwil called out. “We find ourselves in need of directions or guidance one might say. Can you by chance point us in the direction of Quebec?”

Mwil gestured to Emperor Blue who was frantically scanning the seas and looking at map fragments in frustration.

“I know I had Red Beard the Gold Hearted pack it for me. WHERE IS THE OTHER HALF OF THIS MAP?” Emperor Blue yelled at his terrified navigator Gregor Rousseau. “I hired you because you were French and promised me you could pressure my enemies, instead you can’t even decipher this perfectly good map,” Blue continued with anger.

“We look forward to hosting you for dinner in 5 weeks,” BB called out as Cancun headed off with fresh directions.

Before they drifted out of earshot, Emperor Blue could be heard saying “All is well in the end, if we hadn’t been detoured we never would have seen those gorgeous mermaids.”

“Bleh, gorgeous is generous, mid at best I’d say,” Mwil responded. “Not a single one of those mermaid could squat 125 pounds max. Absolutely pedestrian. Give me a sturdy landlocked lady any day over these coastal elites.”

“Truly a cast of characters we are surrounded by”, IR thought aloud.

“Oh no, we got to enamored with our vacation and did not plan any festivities or food for the Pterodactyl’s arrival,” the consummate host BB noted.

“Don’t fret my friend, we have a brutal defeat planned for them.”

Offensive Game Plan

Base Formation (~70%): 11 Personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR)
Secondary Formation (~25%): 12 Personnel (1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR)

Special Formation (~5%): 10 Personnel (1 RB, 4 WR)
Play Mix: 60% Pass, 40% Run

Did you know that Cwmfelinfach is a small, sleepy village in Wales, known for its beautiful natural landscapes and mountainous views? Ironically, their small, sleepy corners will soon have a clear view of WRs blowing right by them. This week, we aim to air it out.

Running Game:
Although we are pass heavy this week, everything starts on the ground. By establishing the run early, we look to force the Pterodactyls to switch to a heavier package or risk getting run over. Plan is that his opens up the passing game, particularly the play-action pass.

·        Outside Runs / D Gap: We will rely on our athletic offensive linemen to get outside and into the second level against Cwmfelinfach’s linebackers, who are weak against the run, especially Rozeboom and Davis. We will use the far-side guard to pull and block play-side, as well as Likely, who is an excellent run blocker. Likely can engage linebackers in the second level, creating more running room.

·        Inside Runs / A & B Gap: We will run inside as well, but not at the same rate as the outside runs. When we do, Chris Jones will be doubled. Our center and either Thuney or Nelson (depending on where Jones is lined up) will double him. (Outside runs: 70%, Inside runs: 30%)

·        Deebo and Incorporating Motion: Deebo will once again be involved in the run game. We will motion him to create confusion in the defense, using him in the run game to create mismatches, especially against linebackers who may struggle to contain him.

·        Weapon X: Lamar’s dual-threat ability provides us with a significant advantage and is always a feature of our offense. We will utilize a mixture of planned designed runs and a heavy dose of read option, where Lamar can threaten the defense while accounting for both him and either Jaylen Wright or Deebo’s speed simultaneously. Our read-option run plays will also take advantage of our top-tier run-blocking OTs (Sewell and Jackson) and elite blocking TE (Likely), who can attack the edges and LB support, giving Lamar or our backs an advantage on these read-option outside runs (preventing the defense from exclusively focusing on our interior run attack).

·        RB Snap Percentages: Jaylen Wright (40%), Brian Robinson Jr. (40%), and Deebo Samuel (20%).

Passing Attack:
Once the run is established, our entire passing playbook is open. We will look to take advantage of one-on-one matchups, especially with whoever Cam Lewis is covering.

·        Play Action & RPO: By establishing the run early, our play-action and RPOs will create confusion in the defense, allowing one of our WRs or TEs to find open space or a favorable one-on-one matchup.

·        Pre-snap Motion: This is another mainstay in our offense. It allows us to move Deebo around the formation to aide in coverage identification and getting the matchups we can exploit. As mentioned earlier, this will be used in both the passing and running game to help disguise our intentions.

·        Pass Protection: Just as with the run game, Chris Jones will be doubled by a combination of our Center (Neuzil) and either Thuney and Nelson (dependent on Chris Jones alignment. We stick to doubling Chris Jones on passing plays throughout the game, giving Lamar enough time to make a play downfield and force other CWM pass rushers to make plays.

·        Outside WRs: Mike Evans is our primary outside threat. Deebo and Josh Downs will both be moved around throughout the game and take snaps both on the outside and in the slot. We like our receiving core against this secondary and the plan is to heavily target the receiver(s) who find themselves in single coverage, due to having a receiving talent edge and not needing to force to any particular WR.

·        Quick Passes / Screens: We will mix in some screens and quick passes to force the Pterodactyls’ corners to cover more ground and not have the comfort of giving extra cushion. This will open space in the middle of the field for our TEs and RBs, where Isaiah Likely’s size and our RB speed work to our advantage. Screens and quick passes to our TEs and RBs will target the flats and the gaps between the LBs and Safeties.

Personnel Notes:

·        Isaiah Likely is TE1 and will rarely leave the field, with Will Dissly as TE2 in 12 personnel.

·        Josh Downs and Deebo will both be utilized outside and in the slot. Downs to man the slot exclusively when Deebo takes snaps out of the backfield.

·        Ryan Neuzil gets the start of OC for the first time as he comes off a week with no pressures allowed and has experience playing Center this year on a run-focused roster that fits our OL identity.

Defensive Game Plan

Base Defense (~70): 4-3 (4 DL, 3 LB, 2 CBs, 2 S)

Primary Coverage – out of 4/3: Tampa 2 – Zone

Secondary Defense (~30): Nickel w/ Hunter (4 DL, 1 LB, 1 Hunter, 3 CBs, 2 S) – Primarily Zone

The Banger’s defense has a difficult task ahead of us this week. We have to slow down the talented upstart CWM offensive unit that is led by its Rookie Phenom QB (Jayden Daniels). This game is going to be a high scoring affair and our defense’s job is not to try and stop our opponent outright, which we won’t be able to do, but instead to get opportune stops via DL and LB pressure that either gets our unit off the field on critical drives or can bend but not break against this unit. The 2 keys to execute this strategy are: (1) Deploy our deep DL and attack the Ptrash OL and (2) Alter our 4-3 alignment from last week to go leaner with a 3rd safety on the field in our new “Hunter” role who is strong in run-support (lined up pre-snap on the weak side).

Key 1 – Defensive Line Depth on the Attack:

The biggest defensive priority in this game is to have our 4 man-DL front get pressure on Jayden Daniels. This begins with our starting unit of Keion White and Brian Burns from the edges (applying a mix of power and speed rush, respectively), with Leonard Williams and Braden Fiske attacking the INT Ptrash OL. The Ptrash OL has 2 capable, but young OTs that we want to challenge throughout the game. We are going to keep an edge rotation that runs 4 deep, bringing in Josh Sweat and Kwity Paye off the bench heavily throughout the game so these young OTs see a constant stream of different pass rush styles from edges that can go all out, due to being fresher throughout the game than their opposing OL enemies.

Our aggressive edge rusher rotation provides us the added benefit that it limits the ability of Ptrash to provide added support to their weaker INT OL. We specifically are going to target the left side of the OL (Peter Skoronski and John Michael Schmitz) with our 2 most effective interior pass rushers in Leonard Williams and Braden Fiske. We will also frequently incorporate stunts into the pass rush strategy, in order to get our best edge rushers attacking with speed at the weaker INT OL and trusting our INT OL to bother the edges with a power rush change-up.

-        Personnel notes: Johnny Newton to spell the INT DL throughout the game (playing approximately ~30% of snaps). Michael Pierce to sub-in for Braden Fiske in short yardage situations.

Key 2 – 4-3 Defense Shake-up (Leaner):

We once again roll-out our 4-3 Defense (Tampa 2 – Zone), that allows us to support our DL with our strong run-support LBs (Robert Spillane and Leo Chenal). Major change from last week, is that we alter our 4-3 alignment to put Quan Martin in the “Hunter” role of our defense. His strong run defensive skillset allows us to take out the weak-side LB (WLB) and play Quan as our roving Hunter in its place. Playing Quan in the box, on the weakside, gives us much more speed at the point of the attack that is especially valuable against an elusive QB like Jayden Daniels, while simultaneously giving us a stronger zone pass coverage unit with Quan in place of the 3rd LB. The following 2 LBs maintain their following traditional 4-3 assignments:

-        SLB: Robert Spillane in the Sam role where he is best utilized providing his elite run defense.

-        MLB: Leo Chenal in the Mike role where he is well positions to defend the run, but more importantly as our top coverage LB can handle the Tampa 2 “deep hole” coverage role.

Blitz Percentage and Final notes:

-        33% blitz rate to send a 5th rusher from one of Spillane, Chenal, or Quan Martin (allows us to show blitz across the 3 on the second level and disguise where the extra rusher is coming from).

- Heavier 4-3 w/ Hunter role alignment (as primary base defense) gives us strong run support against what Daniels and the Bijan can do on the ground.

-        Additional notes:

o   We keep the Hunter role in on the Nickel giving us 3 Safeties and 3 CBs on the field to combat a strong Ptrash receiving core.

o   In Nickel, we remain primarily in zone (~75%), but mix in some man w/ a single high safety (~25%).

o   Mike Jackson in on Nickel sets (in place of Robert Spillane)

I had fun with the innovation of CPP. Thank you it was creative and allowed me opportunities to think outside the box. But maybe my feeble mind can’t understand that it could actually work or maybe it’s too far ahead of my time? But even with Mike Evans reinjured I think the Vegas offense can do enough to take advantage while the defense has fun figuring out the 3 QB offense.

So as a wrinkle, I think the 3 qb thing might work a couple times a year but as a base, it's just not sustainable.  Which is a shame as they had a good chance to pull an upset with Vegas having to throw out 70 percent of their playbook in the second half with only 2 healthy WR

Meh, Lamar went nuclear and we traded Kittle. I would've started Jayden, who also got hurt early in his game, so, those that would've docked Vegas for Evans would've also docked us for Jayden.

Had to swing for the fences in this one.

not true, evans came into the game with the issue he eventually left with which is why I, and others, likely will dock him.  It was a brand new injury for Daniels

Ahh. Yeah, the norms on docking players for various reasons is still somewhat lost on me. Good info.

There's a couple outlier and to each their own but I believe most people view it the way I listed

If a player comes in after having a high ankle sprain and in the process of the game reinjures the same leg, then his leg wasn't 100% to begin with.

If a player comes in with a broken finger and in the process of the game fractures a rib, that isn't held against him because it is a new unrelated injury. @TL-TwoWinsAway

I can only imagine one QB tossing the ball backwards to the sidelines to another QB only to throw it down field. Just like the Julian Edleman show... but on every play lol

But only when the formation is favorable, and with a blocker/receiver in front of him. #nextlevel
