A "managerial wizard" as General Manager sounds good to me.

Not when it costs you guys like Wolf / Gute and Highsmith and if you think they don't take anyone with them where they go you're sorely mistaken.

The fear of Russ getting hired are:

1. A non-scout/talent evaluator in a position that ultimately picks the talent.

2. Going to be more interested in making GB money... rather then winning championships. (Which can be argued that you need the chips if you expect to make money).

3. His hiring means a mass exodus of evaluation talent.

Ultimately they need to get the right man in place and worry about everything else later. We don’t know the office dynamics maybe Russ is very close to some great scouts that would be extremely loyal to him. Ultimately we are likely to lose evaluation talent because simply we have so much of it and they all can’t be GMs here.

Hopefully they pick the best of the 3.

I should ask where you're reading your "positive things" about his scouting pedigree then because everything that I read, resembles lines like this:

"If Ball lands the job, he’ll need a top scout or two to help lead the personnel department. He’s a managerial wizard, but he doesn’t have the scouting experience."

From footballfocus. So, please do share where you're reading he has a positive scouting background. I'm pretty sure you're in the minority in terms of people actually reading that about him.

I already did in this thread.

Also: who is the author of those words in your post? Someone who knows Russ Ball?

I wish I felt better about Wolf or Gutekunst .. just have no clue on what players they are largely responsible for in bringing to GB.  Did they do the leg work on any of our top players?

In the positions they're in, they've done some sort of work on every player we have. They aren't area scouts, they're Ted's right hand guys.

Then the Packers will have a great manager in place to hire their replacements. There are a lot of people capable of evaluating NFL talent.

Yeah .. I know the Sam Seale's do the majority of the actual scouting .. just wonder who these guys beat on the table for and whether Ted ever paid that much attention.

I'm guessing Ted didn't pay much attention to anyone TBH. That was part of the problem.

Also with Eliot .. he's been a pro personnel guy most of his time in GB .. didn't even handle college scouting until the past few years.  I think Gutekunst was more focused on the collegiate side, but not real sure on that.  I'm not sure either of these guys are quite near the level of Ted Thompson when it comes to the college scouting .. up until the past few years he spend many days on the road visiting colleges and scouting for the draft.

Not true. Remember Justin Harrell? Reggie McKenzie was a huge Tennessee alum and Ted in the post press conference of the pick discusses how much Reggie’s connections to the school and the leg work they did on him all factored into his thinking.

He... like everyone has his “boys”. I’m sure he trusted certain people more than others. In fact the issue could be his boys where Reggie, and both johns.

After them leaving he had to break in Brian and Eliot more.

I'm not really understanding why Ball would stay if he's not picked, but Wolf and Gutekunst would certainly leave if Ball is picked.  We were having cap problems before TT began using a cap management specialist.  Now, we have a fairly healthy cap.  If I'm 58 years old and I'm passed over for a job that I feel qualified for, I would pursue other employment or I'd retire.  A 44 year old and a 37 year old may not have that same mindset.

I think these guys are a little bit more of a team than we are giving them credit for.  They all have worked together for years .. would imagine they will continue to work together until they all get their own chance to run an organization.  I really don't see two of these guys suddenly bolting if they get passed over for the GM gig.

Packers employed one of the very best cap guys in the entire industry in Andrew Brandt. He was here prior to TT's arrival and for TT's 1st year here.

Then they went with Russ Ball as a replacement
