2018 NFL Draft Discussion

Pass rushers will dominate the first round.

As the NFL continues to evolve into a passing league, we will see more pass rushers come off the board early in the first round. Edge rushers have always been the priority, but teams are increasingly looking for defensive tackles with pass-rush skills to anchor their front line.

In 2018, the supply and demand could lead to as many as seven pass rushers hearing their names called within the first 20 picks. Scouts are excited about some of the young edge players that could dot the class. Considering the number of teams positioned between picks 10 and 20 that need disruptive defenders, I would expect to see a run on ultra-athletic pass-rush specialists at that point.

The sweet spot for offensive tackles could fall between picks 10 and 20.

Teams attempting to peg the potential run on offensive tackles should expect blindside protectors to start flying off the board right outside the top 10. The teams in need of pass protectors fall in line with where the top-rated tackle prospects should rank at the end of the process. That means teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals could make moves to secure OTs when they are on the clock in the middle of the first round. In addition, there are teams like the New York Giants and New York Jets that could move into position to nab a potential franchise player at the position.

No way 7 edge rushers should go in the 1st round but... there probably will. Just like I don't see a 1st round QB other than Mayfield and maybe Rosen. At least based on what I saw on the field this year. Those would be a stretch

Chubb, Key, Davenport, Ferrell, Bryant, Landry, Edmunds, Hubbard.

There's 8 I can think of that are in a lot of people's top 50 as of right now. Wouldn't shock me if over 7 go in round 1.

I said I didn't think there should, not that I said there wouldn't be. I don't see 1st for Davenport (1 trick pony) but who am I. Edmunds plays ILB on film, not edge. Hubbard in the 1st? I don't see it.

I agree outside of Davenport. If there's a 1 trick pony on here it's Key.

Really? To me Davenport looks slow and that was against lower competition. What games did you watch?

I'm wondering what game he looked slow in? He looks like he has good burst and he plays physical as hell. Watch the North Texas tape.

I really, really like Nelson but no way can the Packers afford to take him at 14.

Pretty much where I'm at, though it will depend on FA. Let say we cut one WR and extend the other and Matthews and bring in 1-2 starting pieces on D, now I'm listening. Bahk-Taylor-Linsley-Nelson-Bulaga is damn good.

I think it was @Leader who provided the tweet that says pass rushers are at a premium right now, and they tend to go early and often.  IF the Packers don't draft one at 14, what's going to be available at 45?  I just can't envision a situation in which taking an OG at 14 makes sense.  Maybe if we didn't have major holes at OLB and CB.

I'm just saying if this new GM swings a trade or pursues a starting caliber EDGE (would really have to be either Ansah or Lawrence I guess) and the board fell a certain way I wouldn't be upset.

I have no doubts the team that drafts Nelson is going to have him for a decade, hard to hate any pick excluding K, P, FB that's going to give you top level play for that long.

At some point, availability has to factor into value consideration. Pass rushers go early and this is as early as we’ve picked in quite a while. Even if free agency is something the new GM wants to be active in, quality pass rushers aren’t exactly easy to sign, even disregarding financial commitment.

I guess I just don't see this as a realistic possibility.  We all mocked signing Melvin Ingram to a deal, and he was franchised before he even made it to franchise.  And given the season Lawrence is coming off, I doubt he gets out of Dallas either.
