All the stuff they had been building on all years wasn't featured. It seems like they did nothing to try and mess with OSU's LBs. Other than a few plays, like the dropped Gentry TD, it didn't seem like they were adding anything special just for OSU in. Don't really know what the answer is, especially when Brown's side got shredded too, but they shouldn't just fire Harbaugh. He needs to be willing to let someone in that will change up some of his offensive tendencies though. Wearing down the opponent is fine when you can overpower them, but sometimes, you have to be able to open things up and take advantage of plus athletes. DPJ and Nico (as well as a healthy Tarik) have the pure talent to go in the first round - just use them, or you won't get anyone else like them, even if they've progressed a ton as receivers. I 100% agree with this. There is zero point in firing Harbaugh, and quite frankly I don't really get why everyone is putting this loss on Harbaugh and the offense as much as they are. Did the offense struggle quite a bit? Of course. However, the bigger issue was clearly the defense. Don Brown's defense has never played that poorly. As such, the offense probably thought they could run a similar system to what they have run all season. Instead, they got thrown into a shootout. I also think the offensive gameplan was partly disappointing due to the need for instant points so often. I feel pretty confident in saying that there was probably quite a bit left in the bag because we were chasing points so much. Defensively, I think the biggest issue was a lack of adjusting for injury. It was obvious going in that neither Gary nor Winovich were 100% and Aubrey Solomon didn't play. Michigan should have been bringing a variety of blitz packages and been getting after them. Instead, Don Brown tried to just bring 4. Which worked all season until we had no one prepared to do it on every snap. I also strongly disagree with them rotating Gil and Ross at LB still. It is quite clear that Gil does not have the athleticism to make plays against OSU. He might have a role on the field against a MSU or Wisconsin but he was a major weakness out there. Ross has shown plenty in coverage to say that he should have taken 100% of those snaps.

Both teams have a chance to win each and every year. Vilma made a decent point, but he's missing just a little bit. The issue is not that Harbaugh isn't "opening up his offense". This issue is that they really aren't running "his" offense. He surely has an influence, but this is Pep Hamiltons offense (with an Ed Warriner assist in the run game). Harbaugh needs to stop trying to be a "pro-style" offense and needs to stop hiring guys like Pep who only know how to run an antiquated system. He needs to target someone who can call an offense that operates with spread concepts, can go fast if needed, uses speed as a feature among skill players, can integrate QB runs, and can integrate heavy packages when needed. Instead, they run a 2000's passing game with some screens and a handful of RPOs randomly mixed in. Everyone assumes that this is Harbaughs offense, but it isn't. He doesn't call the plays and you can see how much influence the assistants have in the scheme when the scheme changes directly follow the assistant coaching changes. He doesn't call the plays and you can see how much influence the assistants have in the scheme when the scheme changes directly follow the assistant coaching changes. It is Harbaugh's offense. That's why he hired Pep instead of someone outside his tree (and probably why he was dealing with butting heads between Drevno and Fisch). People can point to Pep being the issue, but Harbaugh generally makes the final decision on plays after the respective coordinators relay the calls, and he's definitely making decisions on what's in the playbook. The issue is that if Harbaugh doesn't want to cede more control, then there's not really much that's going to change unless he completely changes who he is. It seemed like they were trying new things throughout the year, and then almost none of that popped up in the game against OSU. They got into that hole, and didn't think it would go like that. Usually, the gameplan for OSU has been great. And they did start utilizing Evans effectively in space (again). But it seemed like when the TD play to Gentry failed, they just shoved everything the had schemed specifically for The Game back into the bag. Could not have had a worse start when they got the ball back in the second half. I find it hard to believe Jim is ever going to fire Pep, so unless someone hires him to be a HC or he "wants" to go back to the NFL, I'm not really sure how he's not here next year. It's possible McElwain leaves and opens up a spot, but just adding another cook (when they didn't utilize McElwain's playcalling this year) to the situation doesn't alleviate everything. JammerHammer21
Pep Hamilton officially out with McDaniels taking the reigns at QB coach. Not really a surprise with the demotion, but Harbaugh was pretty much never going to outright fire Pep. Chris Evans currently off the team for academic issues. He's saying the door's possibly open for return, but I guess we'll see.
HailToTheVictors+Redskins
Is anyone excited to see this new up tempo no huddle offense? I can't wait to see a system that actually utilizes Michigan's NFL calibre WRs
JammerHammer21
Solid day on the Crystal Ball for Michigan, so hopefully they'll be able to convert some targets into commits soon - might be a while on some, though. Would be great to get an early leap on next year's class with 2021 QB JJ McCarthy, who looks outstanding at this point https://www.hudl.com/video/3/9356262/5bcc996a57984f0e10ae9af6 Edited May 3, 2019 by JammerHammer21
