Remaining Possible Free Agents...

Ghostnote

Recommended Posts

These are potential free agents that could be had for low cost role fillers.

RB - Jeremy Hill

Prior Bengal RB that never lived up to his hype.

RB - Christine Michael

A solid back up that could garner some playing time. Better option than Bibbs or Marshall at this point.

TE - Luke Willson

Prior Seattle TE who was reliable when Jimmy Graham was not. Still young but could be cheap and a solid blocking TE.

LB - Navarro Bowman

If Zach Brown is not back, Bowman could fill the role for a year and would be relatively lower costing than what Brown is asking for.

G - Jack Mewhort

Mewhort was a 2nd round pick in 2014 but had 2 knee injuris and a triceps injury that has hindered his progress with the Colts. If the Colts dont bring him back, he could be a solid rotational guy or back up, and if he can stay healthy, compete at LG.

I get that he did well under Gruden in 2014 (222 carries, 1124 yards, 5.1 YPC in 16 GP/8 GS). But that was the only year he did well. He fell off significantly after that (3.6, 3.8, and 3.1 YPC). Still, it's either him, Thomas Rawls (a RFA who wasn't tendered by the Seahawks so he's a UFA), or Orleans Darkwa for young RBs. If you want to go older, you can look at guys like DeMarco Murray, Doug Martin, LeGarrette Blount, Adrian Peterson, and (even though he won't come back) Alfred Morris.

I wonder if we'd better served getting one of the older guys on a one-year deal. Doug Martin, maybe? o.O

Saying that Michael is a better backup option than a guy who has never taken a snap for us and a guy we added in December isn't saying a lot. That kind of feels like making a move to make a move.

Eh, I'd rather give Sprinkle another chance to be that cheap, young blocking TE.

Upside: great player when healthy.
Downside: health has been a serious issue for the past couple of years. NFL.com lists him as a two down thumper.

Still, not the worst option. I'd be willing to go for a one year reclamation deal here. Only other (non-Zach Brown) options are Jerrell Freeman (older, multiple PED suspensions), Derrick Johnson (even older than Freeman), Brian Cushing (not as old as the other two, but multiple injuries and PED suspension in his past), and three guys who didn't live up to their draft pick (but are in their mid-twenties): Jon Bostic, Kevin Minter, and Gerald Hodges.

With Josh Sitton signing with Miami and the Redskins not considering Justin Pugh, I would on board with giving Mewhort a three year deal that could be escaped after one.

Of the players listed, Mewhort would be my preference as the #1 target.

Didn't we have Michael and cut him?

I was going to say, no, we didn't, but then doublechecked myself and found that in fact he was on our practice squad for a month in 2015. He obviously made such an indelible impression on me.

We also need to add depth at FS too. Nicholson had the shoulder injury and concussion last year, we can’t just roll with him and an unproven udfa like Smithston. We need to get vet competition on a vet minimum deal and hope that Smithston bears that vet out. If not, no harm, Smithston can go on the practice squad again.

I’d sign Hankins or Logan first, but after that if we have money I’d either re-sign Breeland or sign Scandrick because we need a reliable slot corner.

I’d sign Luke Wilson, Mewhort and Bowman for the reasons that Woz talked about. I have to say though it probably makes more sense to sign Kevin Minter than Bowman because of Minter’s age and he still can improve. Either would be good competiton for Foster for the starting position opposite Brown.

We should talk to Thomas Rawls and Marcus Wheaton to see if we can get them on the cheap and re-sign Phil Taylor to a vet minimum deal too. All 3 of these players are still under 30 and have starter talent, they’ve just had bad luck with injuries the last few years, if we get them on vet minimum deals and they help us as depth players it will be worth it.

Wheaton can also return punts and kick offs so we won’t have to have Crowder and Thompson do that anymore.

I wonder if Luke Jockel would work as a part of our line. Young and talented, just hasn't been good?

It’s worth a shot, and he’s versatile enough to play G & OT. If we get him, hopefully Callahan can develop him like he did Moses, Long, Scherff and Roullier. I think if anyone could get more out of Jockel it would be Callahan. It’s worth a shot.

We need a guard and back up center considering it’s March and we don’t have one on our roster.... I hope the plan is not to reach for a guard at 13!!!

We still have Kouandjio, Cantalina and Kalis. Yes, I know we need more, they should be just depth players but still it’s not like cupboard is totally bare at back up G and I’m sure they could groom Kalis to be the back up C, perhaps that’s the plan. They also gave a guy on the roster they signed names Demetrius Rhaney listed as a back up center. He’s a 5th year pro from Tennessee State who I don’t know much about but they must have added him for a reason. I would think Callahan likes him or liked his potential coming out of the draft while he was scouting OL to draft at Dallas.
