Take a look at my JOHNSON!

Impressive, no? xD

So, cereal question here - read that the Texans picked up Johnson following the Browns cutting the OT from Florida State. He's got a nice resume from college, but that means nothing at this point...

So, your thoughts on Johnson? Any sort of potential? Why was he cut?

All kidding about the porn name aside - but last year in camp, Rod Johnson did not look fluid at all to me - he looked stiff.

I chalked it up to be a rookie and his mind was having difficulty catching up to the speed of the NFL game. He was erect too quickly in his backpedal, lost all his leverage and was beaten by a bull rush. I thought give this kid a year on a practice squad to develop, and we will see in 2018.

Then he got hurt, and all that went out the window.

He missed the entire season last year with a knee injury.

IMO, I would bet that if he was healthy and had any potential whatsoever with JT retiring, the Browns would have held onto him due to their OT situation and them even signing Greg Robinson/kicking the tires on him. I can't see any possibility of him panning out unless the Browns absolutely whiffed on their 1 and a half year evaluation of his performance/coaching him up.

Seriously?

@brooks1957 and @MWil23 are both right, though. His technique was bad in college and reportedly hasn’t improved. Throw in the injuries, and there you have it. Greg Robinson is the same thing (technique wise), except he has crazy athleticism, so we decided to cut our Johnson loose. When you have a Johnson with no balance, you might as well have no Johnson at all.

He will be missed for obvious reasons.

What could have been:

Little Chubb and Rod Johnson, and if we would have drafted Bradley Chubb, we could have had "Big" Bradley Chubb, "Little" Nick Chubb, and "Huge" Rod Johnson. That puts Ben Gay, Coco Krisp, and Milton Bradley on notice.

Rod Johnson has nothing for the NFL. He will be out of the league within 2 years. He is one of the many Browns selections over the years I knew wasn't going to make it even before they set foot on the field. There was absolutely nothing on his college tape that said he was NFL capable. He should have gone undrafted and had he not been injured he probably would have been cut a long time ago.

I think you are both correct.

What has absolutely killed the Browns over past years is when a starter on the line goes down, the drop off in talent to the replacement is severe. So yes if there was any inkling that Rod could have developed into a serviceable tackle at some point in the near future, they certainly would not have flat out released him and got nothing in return for him.

I may have not been as quick to pick up on his shortcomings as you were, TheeRealDeal, but our thoughts were similar. As soon as I saw him play  - I thought - Wow, this dude has a long way to go......

So many opinions about his play without seeing him play for the Browns...

I get his technique sucked in college, but that’s why he was a late round pick.

Based on these comments you’d think players can’t develop.  Just because Browns players don’t doesnt mean the rest of the league doesn’t manage to do it.

Appreciate the feedback - given our OL situation, we'll need bodies to compete. Right now, our LT is Julie'n Davenport, and RT is a competition between Seantrell Henderson, Martinas Rankins (who is already dealing with a bum foot) and now Rowdy Rod Johnson. Honestly, I hope Deshaun Watson and his knee are up for the challenge.

Good luck fellas! I'm really happy for you guys - you did us a big solid on the Brock lobster and Watson, and you've been pretty strong in rebuilding over there. If the Texans and Browns ever make the AFCCG against one another, let's have the GDT in my backyard with some Texas BBQ...:D

In all honesty, you guys have no hope with Johnson. I mean, this regime is AWESOME at not only evaluating but also developing talent.

Given the fact that Greg Robinson was not cut just the other day - he had been unsigned for a while - I am sure the discussion among the coaches was to determine if he could be a better option than Rod Johnson in the near future. Since Greg was signed and Tod was cut, there is your answer.

Can our coaches be wrong? Absolutely. Time will tell who was right. But I don't think this had anything to do with so and so was drafted by a previous regime so he is out - it had everything to do with who is going to be the better finished product.

Oh I definitely agree with all of that. I was just making a joke about our staff's inability to draft/develop talent, which is a real problem in all honesty. Aside from his 1-31 record, Hue's inability (and his staff's as well) to develop talent was my #1 gripe with bringing him back.

So it’s just a coincidence that every time a front office changes the roster had massive turnover?

How did this staff determine Johnson’s ability?  They haven’t even put on pads yet he was hurt all last season.
