Motor City MoJo: Detroit Lion updates

Lions defensive end John Cominsky was carted off the field at practice today, and the prognosis isn’t good. Cominsky has a torn MCL and is out indefinitely, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The report says Cominsky could be “possibly back for the playoffs,” which would suggest he’s expected to miss the entire regular season.

That’s a big loss. Cominsky started 11 regular-season games and all three playoff games for the Lions last season. He played 569 snaps in the Lions’ defensive line rotation; only Aidan Hutchinson played more.

When the Detroit Lions drafted Boston College OL Christian Mahogany in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the expectation was the big rookie would compete for a primary reserve spot on the Lions’ excellent offensive line.

Alas, we haven’t seen Mahogany since minicamp. The offensive guard is on the non-football illness list and has not practiced at all in the first week of training camp. The nature of the illness is not publicly disclosed, but it’s serious enough that head coach Dan Campbell offered a pessimistic update about Mahogany’s short-term prognosis.

“We have to assume we don’t have him,” Campbell said bluntly when asked about Mahogany before Tuesday’s practice session.

I wanted Mahogany in the 6th over Reichard. Hopefully the illness isn't too serious!

The Lions will open their preseason slate against the Giants on Thursday night, but no one should tune in with the expectation of seeing the team’s top players.

Head coach Dan Campbell was asked about who will be playing during a press conference on Tuesday and his answer pointed to the players vying for spots on the bottom of the roster or the practice squad. Campbell said that he doesn’t see quarterback Jared Goff playing and that he will have plenty of company on the sideline.

“I’ve got a little bit of an idea. Some of the guys we know we’re gonna count on during the season, I don’t see them necessarily playing,” Campbell said.

Giants and Lions fined $200K each for fights at joint practice this week.

The NFL confirmed to multiple reporters that both teams are going to be fined $200,000 due to the brawls that broke out at the Giants’ training facility. The fines came after the league sent a memo to all teams last month that fighting and other “unprofessional conduct” will not be tolerated during joint practices.

Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion during Thursday night’s preseason loss to the Giants.

Hooker, playing in his first game of any kind since tearing his ACL at Tennessee in 2022, ran the ball four times for 34 yards and didn’t avoid contact, and Lions coach Dan Campbell indicated that it was a running play on which Hooker was injured.

Campbell: “Obviously, he’s in the protocol. He’ll be evaluated. I don’t know how long it’s going to be. He got his bell rung. Obviously, we would have loved to get more time with him, but that’s one of those things that happens. I think on one of his runs there.”

Connor Galvin’s bid to earn a role as a backup tackle with the Lions this season has reportedly come to an end.

Galvin left Thursday night’s game with a knee injury and he has been diagnosed with a torn MCL. Galvin will miss the 2024 season as a result of the injury.
