Orlando Ospreys Game Plan

Offensive Formations:  Single back set (3W-1TE-1RB), I-form (2W-2TE-1RB), Pro Set (2WR-1TE-2RB), Shotgun (4WR-1RB)

This week, our goal is to spread the ball around using receiving routes that gives Phillip Rivers different depths too throw, keeping this secondary spread out and hopefully guessing on who to double.  We feel that if we can spread their secondary out that it will create mismatches.  In order to achieve this we've got to protect Rivers, which won't be easy considering the Dragons ability to pressure the quarterback.

Offensive Line

These boys are going to have to earn their paychecks today.  While the edge of Seoul is tough, we believe that the interior ability to generate a pass rush or at the very least the men to push a pocket, we've got to do a little extra to keep Rivers upright for the majority of the game.  We bring in the Pro Set using both Kamara and Carson where one stays in to block while the other slides into a route.  In other formations, we'll pull the tackle inside with a chip block from the TE hitting the edge on screens to see if we can't catch the defense playing too aggressive off the edge.  Eventually, we're hoping to open this offense up by moving to a 4 wide shotgun, but only if this line can handle it.  If not, we'll stick to more base formations like I-form and Pro sets giving Rivers max protect.

Passing

Our passing game depends on the amount of pressure Seoul can generate.  We aren't looking to get Rivers killed just to toss it 40 yards down field.  We'll take what the defense gives us while spreading the field as much as possible.  We want to layer the depth of our targets making it difficult to double cover them all without someone getting open.  We'll toss in some trips right, in 4 wide shotgun and have them scatter like roaches when the lights come on.  If I had to pick a weak area of Seoul's defense, it'd be their corners.   Darius Slay was tops last season (26PD/8INT), but this year his numbers aren't comparable (9PD/2INT).  So we feel if we can focus on pass protection that our receivers will eventually get open.  To slow the pass rush inside the tackles, we'll use some play action pass designed to allow Rivers to roll out as he looks for a target on out routes.

Rushing

We want to use our rushing game as a means of keeping their defense honest, and from dropping everyone into coverage.  If their safeties are playing deep, we'll attempt to pull them back in by rushing more.  As mentioned, their interior line imo is the strength of this defense, so the majority of the runs this week will work outside the tackles, using toss and stretch handoffs.  We'll also mix in some counters and even a trick end around should this defense get too aggressive in getting after Rivers.  We'll get all three of our backs involved this week in Kamara 50%, Carson 30% and Coleman 20% we have the personnel to keep these guys fresh for the entire game and the ability to use speed and power to attack this line.

Defensive Scheme

334 & 335

Defensive Front 7

Rushing

Seoul's running backs have really hurt his offense from really taking off like many expected they would, self included.  So while we respect this team's ability to run the ball, we also understand that none are playing up to expectations this year and that if they are to have any success rushing the ball, they'll need to incorporate blocking tight ends.  To combat, this notion we'll use our edge linebackers to drive the tight ends, pushing the run back inside, where the inside backers and interior pick up the tackle.  In these formations, we'll pull a safety down to cover the short play action or shallow dump route.  In formations not consisting of two or more tight ends and/or a fullback, it'll be left up to our interior and middle linebacker to clog the middle and slow the rush.

Passing

With Bosa back, this team can bring pressure from both edge spots and on formations where Seoul puts 3 receivers or more with only one tight end or less, that's exactly what they'll do.  However, rather than putting reckless pressure from the edge the entire game, this front 7 will play a zone blitz scheme, disguising who and where we generate the pressure.  We'll get our inside linebackers blitzing using this method and at times even the occasional safety blitz.  In short, we don't want Matt Ryan getting comfortable or finding any rhythm and his timing to AJ Green, who has missed the past 4 weeks.

We'll shift to the 335, if Seoul puts 3 or more receivers on the field. Pulling Bobby Wagner for either Bradberry if Ramsey plays, or Haden or Woods dependant upon how many tight ends Seoul sends out.

Secondary

We'll play man coverage with 2 over the top safeties when our opponent puts 3 or more out wide.  In formations when the Dragons puts two or more tight ends on the field, we'll play press man cover 1.

Note:  Our secondary has some players listed as questionable so I've listed a second name should the first not player not start.

We'll play Man to Man cover 2 this week.

Coverage Assignments

AJ Green = Jalen Ramsey (Q) / Jaire Alexander

TY Hilton = James Bradberry

Danny Amendola/ Callaway = Jaire Alexander / Joe Haden

Travis Kelce = Eddie Jackson, S (Doubled by D. Davis LB)
Antonio Gates = Tashaun Gibson, S / Antoine Bethea S
Gerald Everett = Berthea / Xavier Woods, S

Offense

Win with our receivers. We are going to run a pass heavy offense (65/35) and we are going to try to spread out Orlando defense. We like our matchups with Orlando corners, even Ramsey who has not been as great this year. So our offense is going to revolve on the short to intermediate routes by our receivers. With Green back on the field, we are going to involve him a lot this week. Same for Hilton. If he’s as limited as last week, Williams will play sparingly and Coutee will be more involved. If both Coutee and Williams are out or limited, then expect a lot of 2TE sets with Everett.

The Kelce factor. We will split out Kelce on the outside a lot. If Orlando plays man and has Jackson on him, then we can run routes deep with Green and Hilton on each side with the limited Gipson up top, and we like our matchups there. If Kelce draws Wagner, then we can run outside with more effectiveness (see later) with Wagner out of the box. If Orlando plays zone, then it’s Kelce vs a corner, and we think Travis can overpower any Orlando corner

Run outside. We will try to run on the edge of Orlando defense. We like our tackles vs Bosa and Watt in the run game, and we want to use that matchup. Ware gets the majority of the snaps. Drake is the change of pace back and Howard the short yardage specialist.

Additional protection. While we feel we have one of the best OL in BDL in pass pro, we need to be wary of Orlando DL. We will shift protection to the right side to double team Bosa. A RB will stay in pass pro if Watt, Suh or Clark start beating us. RB will be responsible for blitz pickups too.

Defense

Zone coverage with a lot of blitzes.Orlando has a lot of great weapons and it’s hard to contain them all. We will run mostly zone, relying on our 11thranked DL to put pressure on Rivers. We will alternate between cover 2, cover 3, and Tampa 2 with Thompson as our MLB when Orlando runs a 2TE or 2RB sets. We will run some zone blitzes too to confuse Rivers. Slay will be on ODB side, Desir will be on Evans side as he has the size to match up on jump balls.

Set the edges in the run game. Kamara is a not much of a power runner, but he’s a great outside runner. Our LB will focus on setting the edges in the run game. If Carson is on the field, the edges are set by the ends while the LBs fill the B gaps

@TedLavie

Just read AJ Green was placed on IR after going down in the first quarter.  Tough break man, especially with Williams limited this week and Coutee not suiting up.  Receivers were hit hard this week with injuries, hoping that they get healthy for the final regular season game.

335 d with 3 or more receivers on the field.

With two or more te.  Press cover 1.

So he has three wr on the field,

You're still playing 335

You're still supposedly playing cover two safeties, you still have a safety on kelce according to coverage assignments section

Just saying

Okay....I guess I missing it.

335 is my nickel package.  Man on the outside receivers, with two deep safeties.  Leaving a safety/corner and Linebacker Davis

I'd hope that my players are smart enough, even if I wasn't in typing this up to see a well known TE uncovered the entire game, but maybe not.

Maybe Ryan and Kelce steal the show while my corners are covering receivers on the bench.

With all the injuries to his receivers, it sounds like he'd be playing two TE sets, which puts me in Cover 1 Press so if I wasn't clear on my cover 2 high scheme, it really doesn't matter because his formation changed to duel TE, which changes my scheme.

Okay....You really want that 1 seed to be picking this defense scheme appart.

Based on Ted's game plan, he's playing two te sets, which puts me in press cover 1.

Honestly I'm probably still gonna vote for you cause his wr are mostly hobbled or out but I figured I'd point this out for future weeks

Davis on kelce I'd imagine.

When I read cover 2, I don't expect that defense to be in cover 2 the entire game nor do I view them in the two deep spots the entire game.  To cover every single formation would take a play book which I don't expect to read something that detailed nor would I attempt to write something that detailed.

I did list Eddie Jackson assigned to Kelce w/ support from Davis.

I'll make this more clear in the future.

Thanks.
