If you eat plain grits that's like getting some oatmeal, adding only water, and trying to eat it like that. You'd never eat oatmeal again. That's why we add milk/sugar/other to jazz her up. Mashed potatoes when it's just literal mashed potatoes would suck, but that's why we add milk and butter to give it flavor. Grits with the right preparation is pretty good, and I used to not understand grits at all until I had legit ones (not Cracker Barrel).
