Vontaze Burfict facing five game suspension

The video on it's own isn't suspension worthy, obviously. Anybody pretending that Burfict is getting penalized for this incident in a vacuum is being facetious. The dude is as certified a dirty player as anybody currently in the NFL, so the league is giving him zero wiggle room.

Is it a football play? Blasting a receiver on a route as the ball is being thrown on the opposite end of the field isn't common IMO. I would've suspended him for a lot longer than 5 games for his Panthers game performance and personally, I think it's debatable whether or not he even belongs in the league.

It's not exactly easy to see exactly what happened from that 1 single angle.

It was a hard hit, but it's not so easy to tell from that angle if it's illegal or not.  5 games seems excessive unless another angle shows it as a blatant illegal hit.

It was a blatant illegal hit. He hit a receiver when he was running his route. New rule this year made Anthony Sherman a defenseless receiver, making a illegal to hit him.

"This offseason, the NFL made it a rule that any running back or wide receiver or tight end running a receiving route would be considered in a defenseless position."

the NFL is hilarious..

Take PED's ( you know..cheat).. 4 games

beat women.. 6 games

Make a football play (a little excessive, but still just making a play).. 5 games

just get out the flags..it'll be much safer

It wasn't a "football play" it was against the rules (you know..cheat)..

And don't pretend like every illegal hit results in a 5-game suspension. This is only resulting in a suspension because it was a player who has repeatedly broken the rules and has repeatedly ignored the NFL's warnings about following the rules. The league is focused on player safety, and a player like Vontaze Burfict is an easy target because he continually acts like an idiot and does illegal, dirty things.

Keep your head on a swivel even running routes. This is football.

So, no, that isn't football

Defenseless position means no hitting to the head/neck area, not 'no hitting at all'...

Honestly idk how people can care. He shouldnt be in the league in the first place, he has blatantly disregarded the rules, and blindsided a player only to blindside someone. like screw him. Should just kick him out if he cant player like a man and have any sort of sportsmanship.

Dirty hit for sure. Should've been fined and given 1 game. Got the extra 4 for being who he is..

Its not for being who he is, he got it for being a repeat offender.

He was suspended 3 games last year to start the season for a dirty hit.

In 2013, Burfict was fined a total of $31,000. He had hit a defenseless receiver (James Jones) and intentionally struck an opponent in the groin (Ryan Taylor).

In 2014, Burfict was fined $25,000 for twisting ankles on both Newton and Olsen.

In 2015, Burfict has the dirty hit on Brown in the playoff game and it lead to him being suspended for 3 games in 2016.

And now this.

He isnt being treated unfairly, dude is just a giant moron. Play stupid games, when stupid prizes.

And that list doesn't even include the time he was fined for doing virtually the same thing he did to Sherman to Maxx Williams (one minute mark of the above video).

Wow, this is weak if he gets 5 games

On the surface, it does sound a bit excessive for a hit like this, but you gotta understand he's a repeat offender, so of course they'd be tempted to throw the book at him.

My coworker lost his license for 12 years after his 6th DUI. You could argue he got that harsh of a punishment for being who he is. That doesn't make it unfair.

It appears he connected under the chin. I'd need another angle but can't really find one.

Even if it wasn't under the chin, the whole neck "area" wording makes it very tricky.
