So it would appear to me as if Joejuan Williams will be the next #1 in that timeframe. The Patriots sometimes draft a replacement a year or two in advance. What they usually do is draft a DB in the second round. The Patriots have drafted six defensive backs in the second round since 2011. They are: Ras-I Dowling Tavon Wilson Jordan Richards Cyrus Jones Duke Dawson Williams. Not a single one of the first five guys became a full time starter in New England. Really Jordan Richards might have been the most impactful and he played 3 seasons before leaving. If Williams is the number 3 corner in two years, it will be an improvement over the recent second round DB history.
1ForTheThumb
CB room is loaded. So much they can do match-up wise for next season. Speed (Jones), Size (Williams), Shadow (Gilmore), Zone (McCourty). Loaded.

Just a probability thing at this point. Just like WR the bad luck will run out at some point.
DoleINGout
@nextsuperstar1 I mean Jordan Richard and Tavon Wilson were joke picks. Everybody at the time was laughing and neither player panned out to level that is expected in a second round draft pick. I think it's ridiculous to compare those two especially to the prospect that Joejuan Williams is. Considering the change in draft approach to prospects picked just in 2019 from when most of those other second round defensive backs were selected is enough for me to dismiss the comparisons. Both Wilson and Richards were massive reaches and should have gone undrafted or 6-7 round. Cyrus Jones was more a specialist than DB, he lost all his confidence and then got injured, Ras was an unfortunate case, injury bug hit him hard several times and couldn't recover. JoeJuan was very highly regarded and was seen from a late 1st rounder to 3rd round pick. Dawson was seen as a mid round pick as well. Much less reaches and these 2 are much better DBs than Jones, Wilson and Richards.

Much less reaches and these 2 are much better DBs than Jones, Wilson and Richards. Cyrus Jones was a laughable pick as well. Major reach. Barely a return specialist as a punt returner. Very clearly couldn't play well in coverage as a full time defensive back. Had red flags with durability and issues related to the character at the time. Complete bust and terrible prospect. Ras-I Dowling is the only comparable defensive back in terms of skillset and even he had huge durability concerns that took him off the radar. Duke Dawson was picked just last year and the jury is out on him. However, there was a legitimate need for corners last season which is why three rookies made the roster, (Dawson/Keion Crossen/JC Jackson), along with newly acquired Jason McCourty who was basically cut by the Browns after an inconsistent season. Now that we are into the third year of Gilmore's contract, his replacement will be Joejuan Williams at some point in either 2020 or 2021. I don’t see them cutting by him with that dead cap number. This. When the Pats restructured Gilmore's contract to free up cap room, they essentially committed to having him on the team one year longer.

If people are going to take the various scouting sites as gospel then taking Joejuan before Greedy came off the board is pretty stunning. I am pretty sure no one had him as their 5th CB in the draft and ahead of Greedy Williams. I see this as a potential comparison throughout both of their career. Although I like Joejuan better for several reasons, I think it was a missed opportunity by the Pats with the raw athleticism and potential that comes with that for Greedy. I say that as a skeptic of Greedy yet a fan of Joejuan.
m haynes
Greedy Williams is the next Morris Claiborne. Williams is soft, he can't tackle to save his life. BB would never look at this type of player. Joejuan Williams will play all over the field. BB will use him to match his skill level to whatever the other teams bring on offense. One week he a in the box safety the next week he cover a big receiver on the outside. I pump to see how BB uses this kid!
