Bears Roster Cuts

Have to admit that some of this makes little sense to me but then there's always some shuffling around taking place between now and right after week one.  Biggest shocker?  Lucas over Bars!!!!  WTF?  Lucas makes JWebb look good.  Also a little surprised we kept 6 ILBs and cut Vaughters.  Don't know what more that guy could have done to earn a spot than he did.  Other than that it's about as expected.

Here's a breakdown of the 53-man roster as it stands now (in alphabetical order):

Quarterbacks (2): Chase Daniel, Mitchell Trubisky.

Running backs (4): Tarik Cohen, Mike Davis, David Montgomery, Kerrith Whyte Jr.

Receivers (6): Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson, Riley Ridley, Allen Robinson II, Javon Wims.

Tight ends (4): Ben Braunecker, Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen, Bradley Sowell.

Offensive linemen (8): Rashaad Coward, James Daniels, Charles Leno Jr., Ted Larsen, Cornelius Lucas III, Kyle Long, Bobby Massie, Cody Whitehair.

Defensive linemen (6): Abdullah Anderson, Eddie Goldman, Roy Robertson-Harris, Akiem Hicks, Bilal Nichols, Nick Williams.

Inside linebackers (6): Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Nick Kwiatkoski, Kevin Pierre-Louis, Roquan Smith, Danny Trevathan, Josh Woods.

Outside linebackers (4): Leonard Floyd, Isaiah Irving, Aaron Lynch, Khalil Mack.

Cornerbacks (5): Prince Amukamara, Kyle Fuller, Duke Shelley, Buster Skrine, Kevin Toliver II.

Safeties (5): Deon Bush, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, DeAndre Houston-Carson, Eddie Jackson, Sherrick McManis.

Specialists (3): Pat O'Donnell, Eddy Pineiro, Patrick Scales.

Pretty surprised they went with that many ILB's. I would have kept another pass rusher like Vaughters but then again I'm not qualified to make these types of personnel decisions.

I have a funny feeling that this is not the firm 53 man roster and that we will see some moves in the coming days.

Still stupefied by the lack of Bars. And although I like Braunecker, I see little upside to keeping him at this point. Surprised that one of the other, new, TEs didn't replace him, or maybe Sowell, just to take a chance on something more special.

I bet they bring Bars back. Lucas might stink, but if Bars had to play in a big game, I'd feel just as unconfident. Plus Bars is a G not a T. Hell, maybe they'll even cut Lucas and bring in a better vet who was waived today.

I do feel good about the interior of the OL.

The only rationale I can see for all of the ILBs is ST coverage which was not good last year.  Woods, Iggy, and Pierre-Louis all have good wheels and they could be a concession to Chris Tabor.

Or it may have been about who they felt they could get through waivers safely now and then they reorder the roster once that dust has settled.  I have my doubts this roster is etched in stone.

But.....Lucas over Bars still mystifies me.

Guessing it’s not entirely unrelated to the fact that none of our RBs or WRs are likely to play on any coverage teams.

Keeping 6 ILBs is pointless. That is an over investment in special teams if that is the case.

Give me the OL depth over an extra special teams body.

I don’t think it’s an overinvestment - I think it’s just a statement as to who they don’t expect to play on coverage teams. I’m not sure we have any offensive players active on game day outside of Braunecker who are going to cover kicks. Those bodies have to come from somewhere.

They do, but 6? 5 is a lot.

Some of those offensive guys will need to cover kicks, no way 6 ILBs are active on game day.

You aren’t taking Roquan or Trevathan off the field for anything other than an injury.

They are both better blitzers than any of the backups.

Maybe they're trying to protect Smith and Trevathan from injury, though? Yeah...I'm reaching, I know. Keeping 6 is pretty hard to explain. Maybe they're gonna try and trade Trevathan? Ya got me...
