11 personnel obsession

Dehner Jr dug up some good stuff in last week's podcast on The Athletic. Bengals are running 11 personnel 10% more than the Rams (who arguably have the better personnel for it).

Bengals are also tipping their hand at an alarming rate too. A lot was made last week about how Good being in the game was tipping off the run/pass split. The bigger deal is actually the TE usage. Because they're worried about maintaining Eifert, Eifert is basically never run blocking. The Bengals pass 90% of the time he's in the game.

Let that sink in.

They pass 56% of the time Sample is in there. CJ 62%.

The Rams have quietly went away from 11 personnel so much this year because they have 2 TEs they'd like to get in the game. Meanwhile the Bengals are stubbornly sticking with it to get their 5th WR in the game more than the TE they paid last off-season, or the TE they selected in the second round of the draft.

I'm starting to swing toward the "this staff isn't so smart" side of the fence. This is alarming.

I agree.  The play calling has been pretty bad, as well as the execution from the players.  It looks like either the players are unsure of what they need to do or the coaches are unsure of how to put the players in position to succeed.

It's both.  Auden Tate has been a nice find, but he and Andy aren't on the same page.  Alex Erickson is a nice niche player, but shouldn't be playing the snaps he's playing right now.

By contrast, we know Eifert and Uzomah can play.  Sample was a 2nd round pick.  But none of these guys are every on the field at the same time because the staff is convinced that 11 personnel is some magic formula.

It's not.  It worked for the Rams because they had the receivers to execute it and still be able to run the ball.  The Bengals can't pass out of those sets because the three receivers they're putting out there aren't good enough (cumulatively).  They can't run out of it because the line can't block well enough, and there aren't enough TE's in there to help block.

If i were the OC, i would have had Sample in there as a FB/H-Back by week 3 to help with the run game and provide Andy with some blocking help or a quick outlet.  If that didn't work, then it would have been on to the next idea a few weeks later.  They're just trotting out the same gameplan and tendencies each and every week, and it's too predictable.

It's amazing that we can't seem to use our second round TE.  Or just even find a role for him.  There has to be some disconnect between the front office/Tobin and Taylor/Callahan on this

Finally got a chance to watch the game, and we're still the worst screen team in the NFL.  Every time the Bengals called a screen play it was blown up immediately.  We're not fooling anyone.

Zac Taylor seems good at play design but play calling and mixing up tendencies, he's been awful...
