FINAL NEGOTIATIONS

DT Derek Tripp (88) - 1 year deal, $8.0 mil salary, $5.0 SB, $13.0 Y1 cap hit - $13.0 mil Total Contract REJECTED - FRANCHISE TAGGED

- So he said he would prefer to test FA rather than take this deal.  It was a $13 mil offer, the franchise tag is $19.9 mil.  If I want to sign him in FA I'll probably have to offer like $16 mil or so.  I figure I might as well tag him.

After tagging Tripp I don't have a ton of cap space, $28.19 mil.

I also don't have a ton of needs, so I'm just going to use my draft picks to fill out the roster.

The top FA is DT Sergio Thornhill, who I drafted with the Bengals and is a Superstar rated 88 OVR.  Good to know the CPU isn't retaining any of the good players I drafted them.

Well that was a close call, stuff like games crashing/glitching and ruining a franchise you are this deep into ruins my motivation to play at all. Just sucks the wind right out your sails, so I’m glad the patch got it back up and running.

Tripp needs to Tom Brady the **** out of this and never retire. At least regression didn’t slam him hard this year.

This is a very deep draft class, which is great for me sitting all the way back at 28.  I'd say my biggest needs heading into this draft are Oline, WR, RE, FS and a backup RB. Listed in the chart are 22 players that I would consider good value at 28.  Obviously some are better than others, and some aren't a need at all (mostly the edge rushers).

I don't want to move way up into the early part of the round, in fact I'd be open to moving back, but if someone interesting drops to say, 20, I think I'd make a call about a move.  Since there are so many prospects I'm not going to go over them all now, I'm going to sim to 20 then talk about who's still on the board at that point.  I'd like to point out that I think this is a pretty strong 2nd round class so I'd love to be able to use all three of those 2nds if possible.

Ok Houston is on the clock at 20.  A lot of the board is gone.  All of the board starting at RT Brooks Woods are still available.

RT B Woods is listed as a Late 1st round talent and he's already 23 years old.  He had a solid combine but he's someone I would prefer in the 2nd.

RE Terrelle Vick had a great combine, he ran a 4.65 and was 1st in 3 cone and shuttle.  He's 22 years old and a Late 1st talent.  OLB isn't really a need though.

CB Rashaud Parsons looks great, he ran a 4.42 and was killer in the rest of the drills.  He's 22 and is listed as an Early 1st round talent.  He might be BPA but I'm really stacked at CB.  I expect he'll be gone by 28.

ROLB Roman Green would move to MLB for me, he had a decent combine (4.68) and looks like he hits like a ton of bricks (he did 31 bench reps).  His 3 attributes are great and he's 21 years old.  He's a mid first round talent.

LOLB Jalen Douglas was 1st in every combine drill but bench press.  His 3 attributes aren't as good as Green's, but he's faster and listed as a pass coverage linebacker (Green is listed as Run Stuffer).  He's 22 years old.  Honestly I'd be cool with either Green or Douglas, but Green might pair better with Caver, who's already a primary coverage linebacker.

DT Sheldon Rackley is a 21 year old Run Stuffer listed as a mid first round talent and is a mid 1st talent.  His combine was solid and his top 3 attributes are solid.  Nothing jumps off the screen for this guy but he should be solid.  He could start at DE for a year then move to NT when Tripp retires.

DT Kevin Long is a little undersized at 6'2" 287 lb, but he looks like a good interior pass rusher.  His combine was great, and his top 3 attributes look good.  He's 22 years old.  He would play DE.

That is 7 guys, and I'm up in 8 picks so I'm pretty comfortable just waiting for my pick.

RE T Vick (72) goes #22 to the Saints.

CB R Parsons (77) goes #23 to the Browns.

RT B Woods (74) goes #25 to the Bengals.

I'm on the clock.

Ok I think one of the two linebackers are probably BPA here.  The two DTs would fill a bigger immediate need (although an upgrade at my #2 MLB spot wouldn't be bad).  Also, the #2 MLB plays a lot more snaps than my RE plays.  ROLB Green and DT Rackley are both 21 while the others are 22.  I really prefer first round picks that are 21.

With the 28th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

ROLB Roman Green, UCF

Run Stopper (74), Power Rusher (72), Speed Rusher (69), Pass Coverage (65)

2Ty7GaT.jpg

- Crap.  Normal dev.  UGh.  Not a great pick.  He's a pretty good athlete for the position.  Needs to work on his coverage.  He does have some decent pass rushing moves which is interesting for a MLB.  He'll be a starter but not a star unless he gains some traits.

DT Rackley goes with the very next pick, he's 75 OVR.  And then LOLB Douglas immediately after that, 74 OVR.  And DT Kevin Long is gone at 32, he was 74 OVR.  None of them made it to the 2nd, wow.

*TRADE*

NY Giants Receive

#51 overall

#124 overall (4)

FS X Acosta (81)

ARI Cardinals Receive

#33 overall

I need to move up to grab an Onlineman to start at Center for me.  The giants drop 18 spots, but pick up a 4th and a new starting FS, which is listed as one of their top needs.  Acosta was replaced in the starting lineup last year by rookie FS Beekman.

With the 33rd pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

LG Emmett Spicer, Stanford

Pass Protector (76), Agile (73), Power (69)

k25aZGm.jpg

- Crap, normal dev again.  He's only 21 years old, and already pretty good so he can still start for me.  He really needs to work on his run blocking though.  Frustrating start to this draft.

I have two more 2nds, one at 47 and one at 60.

I'm on the clock at 47.  There are several good Olineman, CBs, and MLBs here on the board, but they all seem redundant this early in the draft.  Only one guys makes sense here:

With the 47th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

DT Dallas Dawson, Penn State

Run Stopper (77), Speed Rusher (77), Power Rusher (72)

JSfaYOI.jpg

- Hidden dev!  There we go.  He's the #3 talent in the whole class, this pick is a homerun.  He'll be my new starter at RE.  Good lord he has 82 speed, 88 acceleration.  This guy reminds me of DT Tripp as a rookie.  He's 21 years old.  Great pick.

CLE Browns Receive

#60 overall

MLB M Turner (78)

ARI Cardinals Receive

Future 1st Round Pick

Cleveland moves back into this draft getting another 2nd round pick while also picking up a new starting MLB (which is listed as their top need).  I drafted Turner's replacement already early in the draft.

Ok, simming to the 3rd.  I have picks 76 & 92.

With the 76th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

HB Addison Buchanon, Marshall

Elusive Back (67), Receiving Back (59), Power Back (50)

lDSHoBp.jpg

- Normal dev, but I really needed a new backup.  He has good speed, doesn't do much else.  22 years old. This was a really weak RB class.

With the 92nd pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

CB William Roberts, Purdue

Man to Man (65), Slot (65), Zone (63)

FhAUi7O.jpg

- Normal dev, but he's a pretty good athlete.  22 years old, should develop into a solid backup.  Definitely raw.

4th round time.

The only person worth taking here in the 4th is a Guard, and I don't need any more of them right now.  I think I'm going to see if I can get a future 3rd for this pick.

Well I can't find any future 3rds, I guess I'll take a future 4th

4th round pick - traded to the Titans for a future 4th.

On the clock in the 5th.  I have picks 135, 156 & 158.

That Guard I was considering in the 4th is still on the board, so I figure why not at this point.

With the 135th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

RG Delvin McCoy, Texas Tech

Power (70), Pass Protector (66), Agile (62)

Ro5UXkQ.jpg

- Normal dev.  He's a good run blocker but needs to work on pass protection.  He's 21 years old, should develop as a solid backup.

With the 156th pick in the NFL Draft the Arizona Cardinals select:

FS Chase Jones, Colorado

Hybrid (61), Zone (58), Run Support (53)

WkP6h73.jpg

- Normal dev, pretty raw but a good athlete.  I needed a backup safety.  This guy needs a lot of work.  22 years old.

I don't have any one else on my draft board at this point.

5th round pick - traded to the Browns for a future 4th.

6th round pick - traded to the Steelers for a future 5th.

6th round pick - traded to the Titans for a future 5th.

6th round pick - traded to the Dolphins for a future 6th.

7th round pick - traded to the Seahawks for a future 6th.

7th round pick - traded to the 49ers for a future 6th.

That's the end of the draft.  Certainly not my strongest draft.  If Dallas Dawson ends up just Star dev this class is going to look pretty poor.
