Draft Lottery

nba-draft-lottery3.jpg

I only have one lottery pick this year, my own which is the #1 best odds.  The top 5 odds are:

1.       Grizzlies (25.0%)

2.       Pistons (19.9%)

3.       Kings (15.6%)

4.       Suns via Heat (11.9%)

5.       Celtics (8.8%)

Who’s it going to be…..

The Kings won the lottery, I landed the #2 overall pick and the Celtics jumped up for #3 overall.  The Pistons fell to 4.  I also have the 16th and 24th picks, as well as two second round picks, one of which is the 31st pick.

2021 NBA Draft

NBA_Draft_logo_(no_year).png

Draft Picks

Round 1 – 6 overall

Round 1 – 16 overall

Round 1 – 24 overall

Round 2 – 41 overall

I could really use an elite Center or PF prospect from this draft.  I also need to pickup another SF for my roster.  I could use shooters too, as my team has a real hard time scoring.  PF Boomer Hurley looks like a real stud, but I don’t know how I could afford to wait 2 years for him to come to the U.S. considering my job is on the line.  Center Sylvester Gatens is massive with A+ potential, if he falls to 6 (which I doubt he will) I think he’ll definitely be my pick.

#1 overall is obvious, the Kings select Superstar PG Sagana Enyeama.  He’s one of the most dominant prospects I’ve ever seen.  The Hornets take SF Jack Brooks #2 overall, he’s a good athlete with size.  The Celtics select Center Sylvester Gatens #3 overall, crap.  Woah, the 76ers have traded Center Joel Embiid to the Pistons for the #4 overall pick.  The 76ers select SG Larry Bosh at 4, that’s good for me I don’t need another Guard.  The Knicks select SF Matthew Bowman at 5.  I’m on the clock.

Here are the top players available at 7:

PF Boomer Hurley

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
4 PF Boomer Hurley 6'9" 248 7'3" Australia 74 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C D+ B- A- C+ D+ B C+ C+

Besides having an awesome name, Hurley is also a really good prospect.  He has decent size and can shoot 3s.  He’s also the best interior defender in the draft, a decent perimeter defender and a pretty good rebounder.  He’s pretty much the ideal modern PF prospect.  He has the Difficult Shots, Lob City Finisher, Pick & Roller, and Posterizer badges.  As I’ve already stated though, he’s staying in Australia two more years.

C Jud Stafford

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
8 C/PF Jud Stafford 7'0" 254 7'4" OSU 78 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
B B- B C+ D+ C- B+ C+ D+

Stafford is bigger than Hurley, and is also a better shooter and interior scorer.  He’s significantly weaker defensively though, but his length should help on defense.  He has the Drop-Stepper and Up & Under Specialist badges.  If I were to draft him, I’d move Stafford permanently to PF.  His Potential rating isn’t ideal for a top 10 prospect, but at 78 OVR he should be able to contribute right away.

PF Darius Thompson

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
11 PF/C Darius Thompson 6'11" 266 7'6" Purdue 69 B+

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D- B- D- C+ C D+ C+ C+ C-

Thompson has the longest wingspan of the three prospects and has a similar B+ Potential rating to Hurley.  At 69 OVR though, he has a long way to catch up to the other two.  He has a decent mid-range shot that makes you think he could develop a 3 pointer over time.  He also has the Charge Card, Pick & Popper, Pick & Roller, and Rim Protector badges, which are some of the best badges for a big to have.  I don’t think he’d be able to contribute right away though.

I kind of have to take into consideration my current poor standing with my owner.  Jud Stafford makes the most sense in that regard as he should be able to make the biggest impact right away.  However, there are some risks involved with moving him to PF.  One, I don’t know what his OVR will be after moving him to that position.  Also, I don’t know if changing his position will hurt his development, and he already has the weakest potential rating of the 3.  Still, I don’t see how I can pass him up.

With the 6th pick in the NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies select:

C/PF Jud Stafford, Ohio State

EkXS6zg.jpg

Stafford should start at PF for me right away.

Time to sim to my next pick.  PF Boomer Hurley goes #10 overall to the Spurs and PF Darius Thompson is selected 12th by the Wizards.

Here are the top players available at 16:

SF Lu Yi

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
13 SF Lu Yi 6'7" 246 7'0" China 65 A-

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
C C+ D+ D+ B- C- C C C

Yi is pretty average at everything, he’s not really great at anything but not terrible at anything either.  He has pretty good length for the position and has the highest Potential rating left in the draft.  He’s not particularly athletic though and he has no badges.  At 65 OVR he’s pretty raw and will need time to develop.

PF Stephon Patrick

DE Rank Position Name Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
21 PF Stephon Patrick 6'8" 240 7'0" OSU 64 B

INS MID 3PT INS D PER D PLMK REB IQ PHYS
D+ B B- C- D- D+ C+ C- D

Patrick is another Stretch 4 prospect, but he’s a bit undersized and not athletic at all.  He’s an OK rebounder and interior defender, but again he’s undersized.  He has no badges.

That’s it here.  Most of the other prospects in this range are SFs inferior to Yi or PGs.  Yi is raw, but I don’t really see how Patrick gives me anything as a backup PF that Wendell Houston (the #5 overall pick from last year I got in a trade) gives me.  This pick seems obvious to me.

With the 16th pick in the NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies select:

SF Lu Yi, China

3wHNsm6.jpg

Li will likely spend his first season in the G League, then join the rotation the following season.

I still have another first rounder to go.  Stephon Patrick gets selected #20 overall.  I’m on the clock at 24.

It’s getting late so I’m not going to run through all the prospects here.  There isn’t much to pick from as far as shooter or athletic specimens.  I think I’m going to select someone here based on their size.

With the 24th pick in the NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies select:

SF Gurshan Peeler, Texas A&M

9siaUdK.jpg

I don’t have Peeler fully scouted so I can’t tell you much about him until after the draft.  I can tell you he’s 6’10” 272 lbs with a 7’5” wingspan.  He should be able to log backup minutes at both SF and PF.

I have two second round picks as well.

With the 31st pick in the NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies select:

PG Roderick Maxwell, Maryland

4IprGYa.jpg

Maxwell is the fastest player left on the board with 92 SPD, 87 ACC.  He’s a 66 OVR so will need time to groom.

With the 41st pick in the NBA draft the Memphis Grizzlies select:

C Pavao Rancic, Croatia

FvNVlts.jpg

7’1” 281 lb with a 7’10” wingspan Center prospect that will be stashed overseas for a year.

That completes another draft.  I think Stafford will help me win more games this year, and Yi should develop into a solid backup SF.  I kind of took a shot in the dark on Peeler but his size will give him versatility on my bench.

*Update*

Changing Jud Stafford to PF actually raised him from 78 to a 79 OVR.  He also has A Potential!

Lu Yi’s potential rating is actually only B+, not A-.

SF Gurshan Peeler is a 69 OVR with C+ potential.

Following.

Gotta compete this year or I think you're gone. Not sure how that roster will do. If you had two years I think that's when you'd see substantial growth.

You may be right.  I've definitely struggled a lot more than I thought I would.  Obviously skipping the first draft set me back quite a bit, but there are definitely some things I would have done differently if I had the chance.  My first draft pick, PG Mark Carpenter has been a huge disappointment.  He's hurt all the time and doesn't have nearly the impact I hoped he would.  I should never have tried to build around a PG, my first pick should have been a Forward or Center.  Carpenter's lack of development is really what has killed me the most, because I have a solid starting lineup now but no star players.  He came in as a 78 OVR with A+ potential, and 3 years later he's only an 81 OVR.  I also haven't been able to find a competent replacement at Center since trading Gasol away.

Looking back at the draft I did last night, I wonder if I could have gotten away with taking PF Boomer Hurley.  I really think he was the BPA.  I didn't know PG Wendell Houston was going to progress so much in the offseason, I think I could have limped along with him as my starter the next 2 seasons.  Oh well, too late now.

Maybe you will be able to get him in a year

I agree, Boomer Hurley definitely looked like the BPA, but I doubt you would've been around once he came over to the US. I think you need immediate impact.

*Major Injury*

First week of the season PF Wendell Houston dislocated his left patella and is out for the season.  This is the same injury PG Mark Carpenter experienced his rookie year, so its possible this injury lasts into next season.  Bummer.

Top 10 Prospects According to Draft Express - Year 5
DE Rank Position Name Age Height Weight Wingspan School OVR Potential
1 SF Rob Wise 20 6'9" 214 6'9" Wash St 81 A+
2 SF Al Childress 23 6'9" 216 6'11" Indiana 80 B+
3 SF Junior Stewart 20 6'7" 236 6'11" Auburn 75 A
4 PG Grant Wingate 20 6'3" 199 6'5" Stanford 80 B
5 SF Julian McCaw 23 6'9" 244 7'3" Stanford 78 B+
6 SG Terry Nash 20 6'6" 202 6'10" Northwestern 79 B
7 SF Marcus Flory 22 6'5" 218 6'8" Virginia Tech 76 A
8 PG Brevin Buford 22 6'1" 163 6'5" Virginia 72 B-
9 SF Chester McCloud 21 6'7" 229 6'7" South Carolina 69 B+
10 PG Gary McCormick 22 6'0" 178 6'6" Iowa St 65 B-

This is probably the weakest class I've had yet.  The top 10 is stacked with mediocre SFs, which I don't really need.
