Rank every division’s QB situations: NFC South

Recommended Posts

Hoping to get some detailed discussion comparing the QB rooms in each division in the coming months, maybe one per week. Next up, the NFC South.

Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub, Danny Etling, Kurt Benkert
Carolina Panthers: Teddy Bridgewater, Will Grier, PJ Walker
New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees, Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Tommy Stevens
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Tom Brady, Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Griffin, Reid Sinnett

How do you rank these rooms heading into the 2020 season?

All should be really good. Arguably the best division of QBs in NFL history.

Based off of what? Past accomplishments or last season? They’re all up there in age outside of Teddy Bridgewater.

If going based off of recent history we have to look no further than 2019 with the NFCW. Footballs Outsiders ranked their starting QBs:

Brees, Ryan, Brady, Teddy B = 231.9 QBR total.

Wilson, Jimmy G, Goff, Murray = 232.8 QBR total.

Looking at the DVOA and DVAR stats of both bunches of QBs and it looks very close as well.

Now perhaps if “star power” is the aim then sure this probably now has the most star power in recent memory.

NO - Brees and Payton is proven gold dust. You probably can't point to many better situations for both QB/Coach

TB - Both kinds...Tampa Bay and Tom Brady. Not what he was, but a massive upgrade in terms of intelligence and looking after the ball. He hasn't had weapons like this since 07-11

ATL - Nothing really to say. Matt Ryan is what he is, productive

CAR - A massive downgrade on peak Cam, an upgrade from last season. Still meh, for me.

Two HOF QBs, one who is largely regarded as the GOAT and another that will hold every passing record in NFL history. We’ve never seen a top two like this before. Matt Ryan is just icing on the cake...he could potentially own many NFL records down the road (I like his ability to stay healthy much more than Mahomes). Bridgewaters is just icing upon the icing of the cake. The least accomplished, easily. But he was a ROY and I’d be surprised if he isn’t an average QB.

Nice rebuttal you have there

You are talking about for the 2020 season, correct? Not their legacy?

In the early 90's the East had:

Redskins - Rypien - superbowl champ/MVP

Cowboys - Aikman - the 1992 Superbowl champ/HOF

Giants - Simms - the 1990 superbowl champ/mvp

Eagles - McMan and Cunningham - the 85 Superbowl Champ and an All pro

And that was just off the top of my head without even researching. Im sure there are others - like the AFC W might have had Fouts/Elway + some others in the 80s.

This is a good example. Thank you.
