Forum Game: Tecmo Super Bowl Season - Pickle (bucs) wins the Super Bowl!!

Recommended Posts

DEN at ARI: THE RETURN OF KJ HAMLER. Establishing the run was a godsend for the Cards as it helped them protect their QB against a terrifying Denver front, but it doesn't matter if Goff is just going to stand in a clean pocket until the pass rush gets there. With a slightly different playbook, the Denver run game would be terrifying, getting a speed back in Hamler to complement Lindsay/Gordon. Ultimately the Human Deep Threat is proving his worth as a multidimensional weapon for the Broncs while Rodgers carved up the secondary. Ultimately a respectable showing by the Cards, even though they still look like an also-ran rather than contender.

SF at NO: the 9ers' adventures with the offensive line continue. Unfortunately, so does the Kyler Murray Experience for the Saints. You know your team has hit new lows when an offensive lineman scores...on special teams. To have two touchdowns scored against you on fumbles is some kind of voodoo magic, and you wonder what Dome did to offend the Tecmo Gods. Looks like the 49ers aren't the worst team in the league after all.

PIT at WAS: Washington finally showed some signs of life, but giving up free points at the end of the first half really encapsulates their season. Pittsburgh finally got on track offensively here against one of, if not the, worst defenses in Tecmo. It's doubtful Pittsburgh actually makes a playoff run with this offense, though.

CLE at ATL: You can't give an offense like Atlanta extra chances like the Browns did here over and over again with turnovers. Losing Josh Jacobs for any amount of time is killer and really took the wind out of the offense. Right guard was a particular liability for the Browns as the Atlanta defensive line had a great game. The Cleveland Curse appears alive and well in Tecmo, but both these teams look like playoff participants--hopefully we see them play each other again.

TB at LA: This went about how you would expect a playoff contender to put away the newly-minted worst team in the league. LA showed some surprising life on offense, but absurd breakdowns on defense rendered it moot. Lamar Jackson running more will give the offense something to work with, although losing Fournette sucks if only because his backups aren't worth a damn.

GB at HOU: Surprising to see the Houston defense struggle to control the line of scrimmage after Denver rocked it last week, but that set the tone for the rest of the game. Poor decision-making by Wentz continues to hold back the offense. Meanwhile, the best way to keep Stafford from making mistakes is taking the ball out of his hands and cheesing Run Play 4, which Houston had zero answer for. A very humbling game for the Texans and a great bounce-back by the Packers.

NE at BUF: Getting Cook back for this one is a big deal. He carried Buffalo's offense through this one, despite Josh Allen's ineptitude. Meanwhile, the New England offense has looked stagnant and struggles to get the ball to McCaffrey. The Pats looked like they had this in hand early, but the Bills have made a habit of coming back late and finishing strong. No different here.

OAK at NY: DEAR GOD ANDY ISABELLA HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH JUST LET HIM DIE ALREADY. Ahem, that out of the way. This felt like exactly the kind of game Oakland would eventually win, against a high-ceiling but low-floor offense, if they could outplay their opponent's defense. That is exactly what happened, but injuries struck Oakland hard here. Tom Brady handling an onside kick has to be one of the greatest things we've seen yet in Tecmo Bowl.

The over/under controllers I break IRL in this game was set at 3...in the first half.

Power Rankings!!

1.      Denver Broncos (4-0)

The league’s only unbeaten, Denver’s QB play has been heating up while the defense has protected them from mistakes against bottom-tier teams. Destroying the Packers was eye-opening, but they need to prove that’s who they are every week, not the team that squeaked out wins over Washington and Los Angeles by a total of 11 points.

2.      Green Bay Packers (3-1)

The Packers have looked like world-beaters apart from an inexplicable collapse against Denver. They need to keep giving the ball to Aaron Jones early; Stafford can’t make back-breaking mistakes if he doesn’t have the ball in his hands.

3.      Atlanta Falcons (3-1)

The Atlanta offense is by far the best in the league when it clicks. The defense is unfortunately one of the worst, and how that dynamic plays out across the season will be fascinating.

4.      Houston Texans (3-1)

Wentz and the passing game continue to be a sinkhole for the offense, but as long as they take care of the ball, the rest of the team is great enough to keep winning. The playbook’s insistence on redzone passing, and not giving Nick Chubb the ball in general, has been keeping games close instead of blowouts. That could cost them in the playoffs against better teams.

5.      Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1)

Tampa Bay is quietly among the best teams in the league both offensively and defensively on top of having one of the stronger resumes so far, but the on-field product doesn’t feel like it matches the stats. Burrow has looked like a bottom-tier quarterback with great weapons bailing him out.

6.      Buffalo Bills (3-1)

Josh Allen’s arm strength and running ability are big for this offense, but so is his lack of accuracy. It feels weird not to know what to make of a 3-1 team, but here we are. As it is, they’ve kept themselves in the playoff race.

7.      Cleveland Browns (2-2)

The offensive line has been shaky against top defensive fronts, which is a recipe for disaster in the playoffs, but the quarterback play has arguably been the best in the league week in and week out. They’re definitely a contender, but they may need Watson to play lights out to bring home the title.

8.      Arizona Cardinals (2-2)

Credit their resilience, but the offensive line is a momentum-killer and Goff simply isn’t making enough plays as a passer. They need to emphasize the running game more in the coming weeks if they hope to make a playoff push, but I don’t think anyone is worried about facing the Cards.

9.      New England Patriots (2-2)

After a hot start to the season, the Pats have dropped two straight and the offense is downright moribund. They haven’t really proven they belong in the contender discussion, and their playoff hopes are fading fast.

10.  Oakland Raiders (1-3)

Imagine how good this team would have been if they hadn’t punted on half their draft, including the entire defense. They’re gonna steal a couple wins this season simply because of how elite the offense is, and already did against the Jets.

11.  New York Jets (2-2)

The Jets are a tough team to feel good about long-term. The offense is simply too all-or-nothing in the passing game, and the defense crumbled against the dynamic Oakland offense. Mixon is a good foundation on offense, but they look squarely average as a whole.

12.  Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2)

I thought this was the worst team in the league for a long while, but playing even worse teams has boosted them a bit. They do nothing well offensively despite having very good skill players, partly because the playbook has a Brees run in it wasting precious downs. Defensively, they can hold their own, but it’s probably not enough to get them in the playoff picture.

13.  San Francisco 49ers (1-3)

A team that can’t seem to score or stop anyone else from scoring. Tough to see them winning more than a game or two, and Andy Dalton under center isn’t gonna fix this team’s problems.

14.  New Orleans Saints (1-3)

The Brett Hundley Experience was a potential season-saver, and they’re really going to need another Murray injury to have a prayer at the playoffs. The Saints have not been the defensive force one would expect, but they have time to round into form.

15. Washington Buttmunchers (0-4)

A lack of offense is killing them, but one of the worst defenses in the league isn’t helping either. Mahomes deserves better than this, but this is going to be a long, boring season.

16. Los Angeles Rams (0-4)

Strong defensive front but a total no-show on offense so far. The playbook simply isn’t a good fit for Lamar Jackson’s skillset. Unless Jackson starts taking off and running on his own, I don’t see this team winning many games.

If this is a feel good sports movie produced by Disney, you’re all screwed. This is the point where my subtly racist coach with an archaic offense who has handcuffed Watson all season gets fired (Bud Kilmer) and a dynamic players coach (Dic Vermeil) takes over, uniting the injury riddled team with a new play, the forward pass, (cameo OC is Will Ferrell).

As long as Burrow gets the ball off it's usually a catch.  My WR's are unreal :D
