2021 - TCMD GM Mock Draft Discussion

I'm sure most of us feel the same way with the way our teams are starting to develop, but I'm loving what @YogiBiz and I have been able to do thus far with the Giants.

Pre Mock Game Plan

  1. The Giants are just a really young team at almost every position.  Haven't looked but Giants have to be one of the youngest teams in the league.  So getting a little older across the board was key starting out.
  2. The team was also one of three that didn't have a single contract past 2023.  Extending contracts past 2023 to players that had exceptional seasons last year was just needed but required.
  3. Daniel Jones start could have been much better, if not for what I call insane decisions from the coaching staff and general manager.  So getting him upgrades at receiver and across the offensive line was top priority.
  4. Giants defense came to life last season but the team lacked a pass rush off the edge and we needed a better cornerback to play opposite Bradberry, who finally got recognized as being an elite corner.

Transactions to address the game plan

  1. Transactions
    1. Royce Freeman, RB
    2. Mike Williams, WR
    3. James Washington, WR
    4. ERFA - Austin Mack, WR
    5. Senio Kelemete, LG
    6. Ryan Jensen, C
    7. WW - Jonathan Hubbard, OT
    8. WW - Coleman Shelton, C/G
    9. WW - Curtis Weaver, Edge
    10. RFA - Devante Downs, LB
    11. TAG - Leonard Williams, DE
    12. Haason Reddick, Edge
    13. Yannick Ngakoue, Edge
    14. Nicholas Morrow, ILB
    15. Michael Davis, CB
  2. Extended
    1. Mike Williams (trade ext)
    2. Ryan Jensen (trade ext)
    3. Leonard Williams (tag ext)
    4. Blake Martinez
    5. James Bradberry
    6. Jabrill Peppers
  3. Mike Williams gives D. Jones a big body receiver that doesn't rely on speed and quickness to get open.  James Washington will push Slayton to take the next step or to step down.  Additions allow the Giants to put Shepard at his more natural position in the Slot.  Offensive line continues to be a work in progress but add Ryan Jensen allows Nick Gates to either step left to battle it out with that young group, either way provides depth.  Gates had a rough start but really started to improve in the final weeks.  The quiet addition was Royce Freeman, power back type that if Barkley goes down he could start in his absence, but imo makes a great one two punch if both are healthy.
  4. Landing both edge rushers in the first really set this defense up.  Two very different type edge rushers, that I think Patrick Graham would love to have.  N. Morrow gives us a quality pass coverage linebacker to pair with Blake at inside linebacker.  Lastly, landing Michael Davis in the second round of UFA bidding was a steal IMO.  Pairing him opposite James Bradberry, the ILB addition and the two edge rushers just brought this defense into top 10 category if not even higher.

@squire12 and I have been talking 2022 tcmd.

Right now the FA consists of 3 UFA/Resign 1 Resign and 6 Reserve bid slots.

We're looking at doing 4 UFA/Resign 1 Resign w/ the option to boost the offer if out bid.  Still ironing out the details but the general idea for the boost option is that you wouldn't get the hometown 6% discount for the resign if you check a box to boost the offer by X percentage should the original resign bid not get the job done in the awarding process.

To prevent all the teams with money from cleaning house with the added UFA bid, that last UFA bid would be used to sign lesser talented player or cheaper contracts.  Haven't ironed out the details on if this would based on grade of player or APY value or something else.

This should produce a greater signing rate which is always a good thing, while still not completely destroying the available talent in the later rounds.

Any other suggestions please let us know.

Please don’t change this. 3 and 1 is enough. Keeps free agency process relevant for longer. With a later start in future of tcmd (which is the right thing) it would work well but to introduce this would IMO create a gap in the process and clean out the pool too quickly.

I would reduce it to 2 and 1 rather than increase to 4 and 1 to extend the process if changes HAD to be made but like I said this process is spot on and doesn’t need changing.

Are you talking about removing the reserve slots so people couldn’t get 11 players each round or leaving them in place? I ask as if you increase the amount of offers in each round more reserve bids would become active and in turn also reduce the pool quicker.

Nothing I'm talking about here is locked.  Trust me I'll look at the numbers to see if it would create what you fear might happen.  I won't change the system if it isn't making it better.  I love it the way it is too.

Reserve bids id like to reduce it from 6 to 3 just to add more game planning but again got to crunch the numbers and see if it does that without messing other things up.

Again I think what weve created here with the fa system is tops but it could use some tweaking and perhaps even some additions.  I'm always looking for improvements that doesn't jack with the core concept.

I know that’s what I like. You reach out for opinions and I think this part of the process is the real differentiator from other mocks. So just offering my opinion.

reducing the reserve bids down to 3 is good idea for me as you can still use a frontline bid to bring back one of your own.

Yeah would agree with mountainpd here. Would also prefer to reduce the bids to 2 and 1 or just 3 simple bids without a resigning bid. Woud make rounds 2 and 3 even more entertaining!

I agree with there being potential entertainment in reducing the bids in the UFA for the first round or two. But I would vary the bid allotments by round. In rounds 3 maybe it is 3 bids total including re-signing bids. In round 4 maybe it jumps to 4, round 5 it jumps to 5.

On paper this is a great idea. Problem though is Mike the  has to update every teams workbook after those rounds to add the extra bid option.

I feel 3+1 is the best middle ground.

I think the number of bids is good.    I wouldn’t want to decrease it.   That just pushes more bidding rounds into the equation and gets mixed in with the draft time slots

Rnd 1-3 Avg. Signed per team - 2.6
Rnd 4-6 Avg. Signed per team - 1.2
Rnd 7-9 Avg. Signed per team - 1.2
Rnd 10-12 Avg. Signed per team - .5

Basically what @squire12 and I are seeing is that the last 3 rounds particularly the last two rounds of fa bidding isn't really needed, rather than just looking to cut those rounds out adding the extra bid slot has the potential to boost the fa signing totals while reducing the number of rounds.

Teams are signing about 2 - 3 players each round on average the first three rounds so by adding the extra bid slot I'd say that the extra bid slot would increase the team signings per round by 1.

Your better off just decreasing the apy amount quicker after the first three/four rounds to get players down to the veteran minimum then you can remove last couple of rounds.

the players won would increase by more than one IMO as more reserve bids would be triggerered and then awarded.

Most Definitely decreasing the SB quicker if there are less rounds.

most of the late round bids won,  are just teams waiting for the Signing Bonus to disappear on depth guys.
