Washington hires Marty Hurney as GM

At least they won't sign Cam to be their starting QB.....I think.

Don't have a problem to hire Rivera to bring stability and rebuild a team....not sure you need to completely duplicate the CAR formula to this degree, however lol.   Then again, anything is probably better than WFT's prior FO structure.

At least the Bills were making moves geared towards the future.  McDermott was one of the best defensive minds in the NFL (despite Rivera's presence, the defense was never the same after his departure) and Beane was a relatively young GM candidate who got 2 years to learn as assistant GM under Gettleman.

This is an awful hire and is a prime example of Rivera's worst trait.  His loyalty is mind-boggling, especially his loyalty to those who aren't good at their job.  And Hurney's track record isn't good enough outside of his ability to hit on his 1st-round picks.  He's terrible at constructing a team long-term, between his inability to draft between rounds 2-7 and handing out contracts that always cripple the team down the road.  Or how he'd constantly restructure contracts.  I've seen very few decisions worse than this one:

These were the kind of deals that had the Panthers in cap hell all throughout the mid 2010s.

I will admit, his run the 2nd time around was a little better, if only because we weren't handing out insane contracts. But a lot of bad decisions were still made.  Letting Bradberry walk but paying Shaq Thompson is one of the dumbest things ever.  And once again, his inability to draft after the 1st round reared its ugly head in 2018 and 2019.  Donte Jackson has been solid, but that's just one guy.  And it becomes clear his success in the 1st round is only because he usually targets high-floor players (hence why we've drafted so many RBs and LBs in the 1st under him).  The riskiest 1st-rounder he took was Cam Newton, which he kind of had to do at #1 overall.  It makes you wonder what he actually contributes when his talent evaluations seem terrible as does his roster and salary cap management.

By all accounts he's a nice guy.  And a lot of the old Panthers loved him (probably because of the contracts he was handing out...).  But he shouldn't be a GM.  There is a reason he got 0 looks after the Panthers let him go in 2012.  And he would have gotten 0 looks again if it wasn't for Rivera's blind loyalty to him.  Between 2002-2012 and 2018-2020 (2017 doesn't count as he was made interim GM like a month before the season) the Panthers recorded... 3 winning seasons.  And it ain't like Fox or Rivera were trash coaches.  They are better than 3 winning seasons in 14 years.  Rivera couldn't even pull off back-to-back winning seasons here when he had Cam Newton.  I have no idea why WFT expects it to be better this go around when they still gotta find a franchise QB.  But we'll see.
