turtle28
I love, love, LOVE this selection! This guy was a team Capitan at Penn State. He doesn’t have great size but he’s athletic with good burst and gives great effort. Probably never going to be a starter but could develop into a 3rd down pass rush specialist. They also could try to develop him as a SLB. NFL Draft Profile: Shaka Toney Could Be a Late-Round Steal https://www.si.com/college/pennstate/football/penn-state-nfl-draft-profile-shaka-toney “‘Former Penn State defensive end Shaka Toney contracted COVID-19 earlier this year, which caused him to lose training time in addition to about 25 pounds. But Toney returned to full strength by Penn State's Pro Day, where he weighed 242 pounds, ran a blazing time of 4.55 seconds in the 40-yard dash and impressed a host of scouts attending. ”’At the end of the day it’s about making plays," Toney said. "I’m just as good as them. I can do anything that they can do." What's the scouting report on Toney? NFL Draft Bible likes him at outside linebacker, naming him the No. 9 prospect at the position. He's also fast and physical with playmaking potential. "A twitchy, athletic end with a lean frame and great bend on the edge, Toney plays physically and aggressively. He has no quit to him, relentless in pursuit. He likes to line up out wide and utilize his speed in space. Toney is fast, quick and extremely intelligent.“‘ Edited May 1, 2021 by turtle28
turtle28
https://www.nfl.com/prospects/shaka-toney/3200544f-4e60-6812-6fcf-c48d8c87261c “Toney was a reserve pass rusher as a sophomore, as well, tying the school single-game record with four sacks against Indiana (all in the fourth quarter). He posted 23 stops, 7.5 for loss, with five sacks, one forced fumble and two pass breakups during the season. Toney stepped into the starting lineup for all 13 games in 2019, garnering second-team All-Big Ten accolades (41 tackles, eight for loss, with 6.5 sacks). He led Penn State with five sacks in nine games his senior season, garnering first-team All-Big Ten notice (31 total tackles, 7.5 for loss). He accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl. -- by Chad Reuter” “Smooth with easy change of direction, Toney's playmaking comes via athleticism over strength or high-end skill. His physical measurements are very average, but he can be explosive off the snap and around the rush arc. He also has the ability to slip blocks and chase down runners to the perimeter. He appears to lack the every-down power or toughness to handle run duties on early downs and might find that athletic NFL tackles take away some of the advantages he enjoyed in college. Toney could find a home as a backup edge defender with designated pass rusher potential if he can improve his conversion rate in attacking the pocket.” Strengths Selected as team captain his senior season. Keeps hat and pads low when coming off the ball. Lateral movement is fluid and sudden. Unusually slippery as a run defender. Rangy, with some closing speed to pursue. Can punch and shuffle around kick-out blocks. Explosive upfield charge to set up his rush. Uses long lateral slide to separate on inside counters. Hides numbers so tackles can't get squared punch. Bendy at top of the rush to balance against redirects.
Slappy Mc
This dude is going to be a good contributor on special teams and should easily fill the void roster spot from losing Ryan Anderson.

TheGreeK1973
This is a steal for 7th round. I am a big PSU fan and this kid always gave 100% and showed great leadership. With the studs we have on the Edge, he will learn and will contribute greatly on Special Teams. Unless he gets hurt he makes the team. To me he will more than replace Ryan Anderson.

Anderson had/has a knack for making plays when’s available though such as his 5 forced fumbles in 6 starts in 2019.

I think he fell bc of his size. I hate to make this comp bc it’s a long shot, but size wise as a pass rusher he reminds you of a James Harrison or Elvis Dumerville. e16bball
I don’t think I would mess around with trying to turn him into a LB. In all honesty, I’m not sure why some of the 3-4 teams around the league didn’t jump on him as a stand-up EDGE, but I don’t think you want him playing off the ball. Not saying he couldn’t do it, but his knack seems to be for bending the edge and getting downhill. I’m excited about him as a designated pass rusher. I think we’ve needed someone like him, to provide a little jolt off the edge. We’ve got great pass-rushers, obviously, but Toney gives you a different dimension as a smaller guy who is going to beat you with straight burst and bend instead of the more balanced attack you get from the other guys. He offers a nice change-of-pace that we didn’t have last year.

Kinda of a double Edge sword here but here he is covering our 4th round TEs in 1 on 1s at the Senior Bowl Think He's perfect for a Ryan Anderson replacement who gonna to give you plays on STs and mainly be 3 or 4 DE but can also stand up at LB if needed in a pinch

That’s great coverage on a pretty athletic TE. Kinda makes you wonder if Toney can play SLB?

He's a lottery pick, and it looks like he's going to take to coaching, so it is worth a shot with adding him.
