Lancaster Werewolves

Lancaster Offensive Strategy:

This is maybe the toughest week Lancaster has had since I took over the team a few seasons ago. Dealing with multiple big injuries and losing players to recent trades has left us thin in some areas. However, we look good in others and there is still plenty of talent on the team. This week we’re looking to use our deep RB stable to ground and pound our way to a victory. We want to eat up clock as much as possible and keep our offense on the field. We also want to make sure to put balls into our playmakers hands so that we can get the few big plays we need to secure this win.

We want to come out of the gate with a slow and deliberate pace, working our way down the field. We’re going to rotate all of our backs to keep them fresh and take advantage of their diverse abilities. Sanders is going to get the majority of the snaps (40%) and we’ll be using him on a lot of runs on the outside to take advantage of his speed and ability to make guys miss. Fournette we’ll be using a bit more this week (30%) and he’ll be getting plenty of work inside and between the tackles to get some physicality going against that DL. Sermon, Dillon, and Bernard (10% each) will be getting spelled in to get some touches. We’ll use plenty of 2 RB sets where 1 WR comes off to make sure the defense can’t key in on any skillsets. Firkser will be used primarily as a blocker at TE but also will be getting some plays as a FB.

When we go to the passing game we’re focusing on quick, short passes which is what Goff excels at. We want to get balls into our playmakers hands. We will do screens with Miles Sanders and Diontae Johnson. We want to do some rub routes where the big physical Pittman can take out a coverage guy and give Diontae Johnson space to make big plays. We’ll take 1 or 2 deep shots when we feel like the defense focuses too much on the short game and we can catch them unready. Lots of crossing routes and curls. Again, it’s going to be about eating up clock and slowly but surely making our way down the field. Sanders will be getting some time at WR this week as well to take advantage of his ability in the passing game. Firkser will be primarily staying in as a blocker in the passing game as well to help the OL.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy:

This week on defense we want to focus on the passing game fully. We’re going to run some man and zone concepts in this game to keep Mayfield guessing. We think the key to our defensive success in this game lies with our pass rush. We think we can survive against the run with this team and want to really focus on the pass. We’re letting our pass rushers pin their ears back and get after the QB every play against a slightly struggling OL.

When we’re in man coverage, Ramsey will be covering former teammate Mike Evans, Vildor will be covering Cooper Kupp, and Cockrell will cover AJ Brown. Wagner will be covering Zach Ertz and Warner will cover the RB out of the backfield. Logan Ryan and Taylor Rapp will be playing deep zones covering the two halves of the field to prevent big plays. We’ll be in the man cover 2 shell about 30% of the game. For about 50% of the game we’re running a cover 3 zone defense. Rapp, Ryan, and Ramsey will be covering the deep 3rds with Vildor, Cockrell, Warner, and Wagner covering the underneath parts. For the other 20% of the game we’ll be running cover 4, especially when they bring out more WRs with Ramsey, Ryan, Rapp, Vildor covering the deep parts of the field and Cockrell, Wagner, and Warner underneath. With this zone coverage we also hope to disguise some blitzes where we’ll bring one of the linebackers in to blitz and only have 3 coverage zones underneath.

Offense
This week we take on a reeling Lancaster team but we know they're still incredibly dangerous and won't hesitate to put up a big fight. With the weapons they have on defense we have to be creative this week, this is what we'll focus on.

Spread them out to create weak points- I'm sure with sending Mike Evans to us Lancaster expects us to spread them out to throw the ball around, and we'll give them the look they want. But we'll actually be sure to use Ekeler and Harris to attack a dime defense early and often. They'll be forced to get one of Warner or Wagner off the field and that can only help us. Lancaster has a strong defensive line, but this strategy should keep them from pinning their ears back and attacking right off the bat. This will also give Ekeler room to work on angle routes and swing passes out of the backfield. If they decide to keep those two in and go another route by taking a safety off the field, we'll attack whatever defender gets mismatched on one of our receivers.

Play matchups- With Alexander out and trading away Jackson we're going to have an overall advantage against their corners. While we're going to stay balanced in a spread look we now have more weapons than ever and it would be foolish to not use them. We'll move our 4 guys around, creating bunches and using trips and motion to determine who we have the best matchup against and exploiting that. Beyond Ramsey, we feel very comfortable with Mayfield targeting anyone else in that back 7.

Counter their aggression- Like briefly mentioned in the first section, Lancaster boasts an aggressive pass rush. Today we'll use lots of screens and delayed handoffs to catch them off guard. With good LB play they may not always be effective, but when they are they can be crippling. We hope that forces the ends to play more disciplined and play back a little bit

Defense (4-3 Cover 1 robber base)
With losing Russ, Lancaster cast off its best WR and lost another via injury. Like their defense, Lancasters offense can still present challenges. Here is how we plan to work against them.

Force Goff to beat us- With Goff at QB, we feel Lancasters best bet against us is to pound the rock with Lenny and Miles and ease the pressure on Goff. To combat this we've installed the ancient and forgotten 4-3 base. Poona Ford will line up next to Reader to sure up the run D and we have three aggressive run defenders at LB to stop the run game. We'll make it so Goff can't rely on play action passes for easy completions by putting them in 3rd and long consistently.

Cover 1- One of our favorite shells, we'll employ that again here today because it helps with our main mission of forcing Goff to beat us through the air. Our robber (Simmons and Reid will rotate responsibilities) works down closer to the LOS will help combat the power run game. This free defender also gives us a player available to blitz off the edge or drop down into his 'robber' zone duties to keep Goff from dropping off easy passes in the intermediate area without worry of a defender sneaking into the way. If Lancaster goes 3 wide or Watkins is in the game, we'll shade the deep safety to his side since he brings the speed element to that offense. In 3 wide we'll keep the cover 1 base but Neal will come off the field for our nickel CB. We'll mix in cover 2/3 and even some 0 to not be too easy to read.

Keep Goff guessing- If we can successfully get Lancaster into 3rd and long, we'll use our edge rushers and speed at LB to attack Goff with inside blitzes and outside pressure from our edges and robber. We think our defensive end rotation can be very successful against these tackles, so the extra blitzing won't be a lot, but enough to keep Goff seeing ghosts.
