Offensive Strategy

Formations:
Seoul will rotate between 22,  12, and 11 man personnel this week.

Scheme:  Pass (70%)vs Run (30% )
Tempo:  Up Tempo,  we want to tire out the Anchorage DL

Passing

We won’t pass as often this week, but when we do we will do it off PA.  Our focus this week will be in the 10-15 yard range, we want to push the Anchorage LB’s and Baker up  and look to hit the middle gaps.  If Anchorage comes out in man, we encourage Hurts to take off often and force Anchorage to put a hat on him.

Rushing

Seoul is coming out run heavy this week with a split backfield 60% of the time.    We want to get creative with the legs of Hurts, Williams, and Gibson.   Will stick with QB Read and zone blocking concepts.   Carries will split between Williams and Gibson, Jalen Hurts will also be encouraged to take off.    We want to test the Anchorage edges with run defense this game, on the backside of the QB Reads we will have the other RB give Hurts an option look.

Defensive Strategy

Formation:  3-2-6(70%), 1-5-5(15%), 4-2-5(15%)

4-2-5
LE:  John Franklin-Myers
3T: Dexter Lawrence
1T:  Foley Fatukasi
RE:  Payton Turner
LB:  Isaiah Simmons
LB:  Kyle Dugger
CB:  Cameron Sutton
CB:  Chidobe Awuzie
NB:  Taron Johnson
DB:  Nate Hobbs
FS:  Marcus Williams

1-5-5
NT:  Jarran Reed
LB:  Joe Tryon
LB:  Leonard Floyd
LB:  Matt Judon
LB:  Isaiah Simmons
LB:   Joe Schobert
CB:  Cameron Sutton
CB:  Chidobe Awuzie
NB:  Taron Johnson
DB:  Nate Hobbs
FS:  Marcus Williams

Formation Schemes

Seoul will rotate between each formation evenly,   We don’t want to let Burrow get too comfortable with our defensive fronts.   Secondary will keep the same personnel,  with Dugger interchanging between LB and SS.

Run Defense
Anchorage comes in with a nice OL and some nice backs,    we won’t be putting much extra emphasis on stopping the run though.   We think the Seoul front 4 can do enough to slow down the run.

Pass Rush
They don’t get much love,  but we think JFM and Judon can get pressure on Burrow without much help.    We will rotate JFM inside and out in our 3-2-6 alignment.   We want to put some pressure on the Right side of the OL on 3rd downs and make sure Burrow see’s the pressure in his face.

Pass Defense

Formation –  Zone(60%) Cover3/Cover4, Man(40%)Cover1

Seoul will come out with a little more zone coverage this week,  we want to test these young skill players of Anchorage to read the coverage and find the soft spots.   We will sit in deep coverages in zone to prevent big splash plays.    When we do go to man, Awuzie will shadow Chase..  obviously Awuzie’s amazing coverage in practice had to be the reason for Chase’s early drop struggles.   We stick with our 4 CB lineups,  as we still like the versatility of this group.

Matchups for man coverage;

Awuzie -   Chase
Sutton – Smith
Ruggs – Hobbs
Johnson – Pitts
Simmons - RB

Overview: We are 3-1-1 and a lot of our pieces on this young team are starting to emerge. We plan to take advantage of the momentum of our 3 game win streak and not overlook a winless Seoul team hungry for their first win.

Offense:

  • We will primarily feature a four wide this week with Kyle Pitts as the 4th wide as a big slot. We will also incorporate some 3 wide out of this where we line Pitts up inline as well as some bunch with he, Ruggs, and Marvin in the bunch and Chase on the other side of the formation out wide solo.
  • We will be able to shift into three formations with this line up, and run an uptempo offense this week.
  • In the red zone we will utilize some two tight sets with Higbee and Pitts inline and Chase and Marvin outside. We will run heavily out of this set but also feature some passing plays to get our tight ends and receivers involved in this formation.
  • We will once again implement some play action off of our running game to provide us with opportunities to take those shots down field.
  • We will vary our routes and combo to attack multiple areas of the field on the same play.
  • Chase and Ruggs will be utilized to attack all over the field but we will feature quite a few deep shots especially in man against single high which they like to run and make Marcus Williams choose who he is helping and allow Burrow to find the best matchup.
  • We will have Pitts attacking the mid and underneath while also incorporating some seam stretching.
  • Marvin will utilize his route running underneath on drags and slants and we will look to get him in space as well with some switch and rub routes.
  • We will again utilize a zone rushing attack and Jonathan Taylor is our lead back and we will rely on him heavily to carry the rushing load. Henderson and Pollard will be receiving some touches to just keep Taylor fresh, as we want to remain uptempo and tire out the Seoul defense.
  • With the defense spread out most of this game we will have plenty of open running lanes for Taylor and Co to stick their foot in the ground and go.
  • We will utilize our backs in the passing game much more this week as underneath targets and safety nets. If we are seeing heavy blitz we will incorporate some screens or have them chip before releasing but we entrust in our oline to do a great job holding up and with so many route runners on every play Burrow will have plenty of quick options to get the ball to if facing heavy pressure.

Defense:

  • We will match 11 and 12 personnel with our 4-2-5. Against 4 wide we will play a 4-2-5 with Budda as a cover backer next to Parsons, Patrick Surtain as Star/SS and CJ Gardner Johnson as nickel and we will play all zone coverages in this formation.
  • We will play predominantly zone this game overall helping to keep our eyes on QB scrambling as well as create confusion for the Seoul offense
  • We will produce this confusion with our zone by occasionally having  Budda starting in the box then bailing to deep half in cover 2 and sometimes lining deeper and then flying down in the box at the snap as well as running a variety of zone coverages. But Budda will play primarily in the box throughout this game as we want to challenge the Seoul QB to beat us with his arm.
  • We will create additional confusion by having Micah drop back playing QB spy/middle zone disruptor when he is not blitzing.
  • Micah’s main responsibility however, is to get after Hurts and he will blitz often from all over the front to keep the Seoul offense guessing
  • We will be playing press on the outside in all coverages, as well as not giving Kelce free releases off the line to throw off the Seoul timing.
  • Patrick Surtain plays in the slot and has the third receiver in 11 personnel and Travis Kelce in 12 personnel when we do play man
  • Against 11 personnel in man Jessie Bates and Budda Baker bracket Travis Kelce
  • Budda has the second TE in 12 and Cole Holcomb has RB in all man coverages in 11 and 12
  • We will focus heavily on outside contain and forcing the Seoul QB to stay in the pocket
  • We will play disciplined gap control football and be prepared for RPO usage

Went Achorage here. The Trappers going heavy zone will negate some of Seoul's hope of Hurts taking off scrambling in man coverage, and with how stout the Trappers are against the run, even going horizontal like I tried a couple weeks back, it's going to force Hurts into a lot of 3rd and longs.

Alright so, I wanted to take a moment to make my explanation a little clearer.

I think Seoul did an excellent job with his Gameplan, however I do agree with Jlash, I think Hurts is going to be forced into situations where i think he tends to struggle; where as I think in similar situations Anchorages offense is built to succeed.

Anchorage 21-17
