Old Guy Posted January 23, 2022 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I love how even keeled Matt LaFleur is during the tough moments. I hate the way Matt LaFleur is so even keeled during tough moments. Heads need to roll for anybody who 'coached' special teams. I get why LaFleur didn't want to dismiss the guy during the season, but this dude needs to be canned tomorrow first thing. I'm actually OK with this loss. It gives me some clarity on which direction GB needs to go. They need to move on from Rodgers and hope he doesn't **** them one more time and retire so we get no compensation. Over the past several years I was all in on moving on from Rodgers. I changed my mind at some point this year. Last night it became crystal clear I was correct in thinking we should move on. There is too much young talent on this team to keep pushing cap issues down the road. The timing is irrelevant....or....relevant only in so much as it affects hiring his replacement. He's gone though. No way he survives this season.....especially the way it ended. Fire him Monday and you let the world know, which they already should, this loss was on him. As bad as Rodgers played, if we are neutral in special teams in that game, we advance. Special teams cannot cost you games. When you are last in the league by a wide margin, it's an obvious area for improvement. That is from the kicker to the returner, the coverage units and the blocking units. They all sucked this year. It's simply unprofessional and unnecessary. HC's get canned quickly because there's a perceived limited talent pool from which to hire their replacements and the scramble is on. NEITHER of the latter circumstances befell Tampa last year - hence - a trip to the SB. There's a difference between having a beleo average special teams unit, and a possibly historically awful one across the board. It doesn't absolve the offense of being terrible yesterday, but the fact is they directly cost us 10 points in a 13-10 loss. It's on Murphy for not opening the checkbook for a top tier ST coach. It's on Gute for not giving his ST coach the dedicated roster spots that he needs to create a competent coverage corps. For drafting a bust at Punter and Long Snapper, for not moving on from Crosby when it was time. It's on LaFleur for keeping around Drayton, a guy who seemed to be in over his head and can't seem to teach protections, and not trusting his return specialists and activating them for the game. It's on Bojo and Crosby and Wirtel for sucking. It's on the medical staff for being giant cowards and not having Bakhtiari ready to play so we could have another OL on FG protection. It's on Bojo and Wirtel for being morons and not screaming the punt protection was broken. It's on all the coverage guys for not being better tacklers and blockers. As mediocre as Rodgers was last night if we had even an average ST unit our season isn't over today. Was the first SF game this year the one where Amari muffed/fumbled a punt and another SF kick hit a GB player and was recovered by SF? Was that the game? If so.....wow for the bookends. No mention of the O-line either Of course most of the time the QB gets all the glory when things go well (nobody said much after last year's playoff game about Brady's play) and all the blame when things go south like last night. We all forget this is the ultimate team game. In the playoffs especially you can't have one of the 3 phases crap the bed. This past season when our offense was humming so was our running game. Bojo improved the net punt average over JK Scott. But when he arrived, that was when the kicking game started to stink. Then when the weather got below 40 degrees, he also started kicking like Scott. Flush that entire unit. And if guys played fewer than 10 snaps from scrimmage, but played on STs, cut them too. I want a complete purge. His last punt of the night/game went from the (LOS) GB 23 on the fly to the SF 20. That's not too shabby in whatever the temps were at that time of night. I dont see Bojo's punting as being a problem. Clearly he wasnt ready to be the holder - but even there improved by seasons end. As did (gasp!) Amari.
