This could shape up to be a special season, and it would be cool to look back at where our minds were along the way. 1. What were your expectations for this defense before the year? 2. What player or coach has surprised you the most? 3. Who is one underrated player on the defense you feel deserves more praise? 4. I thought the front seven would dominate and our corners let them down repeatedly. 2. What player or coach has surprised you the most? Every cornerback on the roster. Jalen Mills isn't great but he isn't on a mission to lose us games like last year. He has had good games. Patrick Robinson was awful in the offseason/pre-season but is literally playing out of his mind, even when the front seven isn't disrupting the QB. Rasul Douglas is a rookie corner and isn't getting abused. 3. Who is one underrated player on the defense you feel deserves more praise? Rodney McLeod. Again, not great, but he's been invisible on the field at times which is probably a good thing for a player like him. 4. If you could give one long-term contract to a player on defense, who would that be? Bradham. 5. What has been your most memorable play so far? Fletcher Cox going beast mode against Carolina forcing Cam Newton to throw a pick. 6. If you could change one player's number, whose and to what? Jalen Mills to anything. Knew the D-Line would be dominate but thought the DBs would be worse. 2. What player or coach has surprised you the most? Player: Patrick Robinson. A legit starter who is playing very well. 3. Who is one underrated player on the defense you feel deserves more praise? Kendricks 4. If you could give one long-term contract to a player on defense, who would that be? Cox. If I had to extend someone who isn't around for a while already, Timmy J. 5. What has been your most memorable play so far? Probably Jalen's pick 6. 6. If you could change one player's number, whose and to what? Yeah... idk. 7. Make one bold prediction for the defense. Middle of the road as well, I figured Schwartz wouldn't be smart enough to adapt. 2. What player or coach has surprised you the most? Schwartz and Derek Barnett, Schwartz for being able to adjust on the fly and Barnett for being relentless at times, he seems like a great fit. 3. Who is one underrated player on the defense you feel deserves more praise? Jenkins, he's been in good coverage most of the time and his ability to play in the box has proved to be invaluable. 4. If you could give one long-term contract to a player on defense, who would that be? Jernigan, only 25. 5. What has been your most memorable play so far? Probably Jernigan one arm tackling a ball-carrier while fending off an OL at the same time. 6. If you could change one player's number, whose and to what? Darby should have #33 he wore #3 in college. 7. Make one bold prediction for the defense. I think it sits at top 3 in the last 15 years right now without really diving into it. I didn't go back further but we're averaging less rush yards per game than the 91 Eagles and 85 Bears to put it into perspective. Granted, those teams were probably averaging half of what we are through the air but making teams one dimensional this year has been a key to success. And we're doing it with a wide-9 concept lol, who would have imagined. We have disciplined DEs making the right reads and linebackers who can fill gaps. And of course, DTs that nobody can run passed. Every facet has been better than expected. But really thought the CBs would ultimately cost us wins. I thought decent pass rush but terrible DB play. But about late teens in terms of rank. 2. What player or coach has surprised you the most? Jernigan's impact has been most surprising to me. We had a stout defense and turned it into a dominate one. Cox is probably the catalyst but Jernigan has turned it up a notch. Robinson, somehow, has been a god send. I don't know how and I don't want to know how he's been doing it. 3. Who is one underrated player on the defense you feel deserves more praise? P-Rob has been getting high praise analytically. Bradham I think is underappreciated around the league. Douglas has been solid for a rookie. I think Long, low key, has had a big locker room impact. Curry has had a quiet but really good season. I think I'd go with him. 4. If you could give one long-term contract to a player on defense, who would that be? I don't know how they're going to do it with Cox being so heavily paid but I really need Timmy back. That duo has the potential to dominate for a decade. Howie has to find a way. They make the whole defense better. Clearly are making our subpar CBs look good. 5. What has been your most memorable play so far? Nothing is really standing out. Douglas had a real nice INT on Eli. A bunch of sacks are coming to mind but I'm not remembering anything memorable. 6. If you could change one player's number, whose and to what? I like CB numbers in the 20s. So, probably Darby's. 7. Make one bold prediction for the defense. Darby has 4 INTs this year.
