Patriots Training Camp - 2022

I said this before camp.. but I'm probably going to double down after a couple preseason games... Tyquan Thornton and Tre Nixon are capable of completely transforming this offense together. Thornton has looked great and Nixon has flashed.. two two of them really help with the separation problems the WR's have had over the years.

- Bourne has been quite in camp but I think he will be fine

- Parker has gotten a lot of hype but I don't expect him to be used as a #1 .. he's more of a red zone or 3rd down guy when nobody is open, throw it up to Parker to have a chance type guy to me

- Agholor has apparently been good too.. having Agholor, Thornton and Nixon on the field at once is a lot of speed.. but I don't see how they could fit all those guys on the roster.

Everyone talks about the Offense being bad.. but it sounds to me like it's just the OL that's been awful. Sure they are transitioning things but they've got to get that figured out before the season starts or this offense is screwed. Fingers crossed Billy Yates is a good coach.

- Wynn seems miserable since switching to RT .. Onwenu seems to be getting pushed out of RG more and more too... maybe they will finally figure out that Onwenu should be a RT?

- Trade Wynn and put Onwenu at RT .. he's not athletic enough to be an outside zone Guard (he's like 40 pounds more than most guards, right?) .. reports are that Arlington Hambright has come in for Onwenu lately and performed well.. Drew Derjarlais seemed to have done pretty well too.. then take into account a veteran in James Farentz.. they've got some depth if those first two and do well).

Brown / Strange / Andrews / Hambright / Onwenu should be the OL this year imo (Desjarlais / Russey / Farentz / Herron / Cajuste backups)

I think we've got a 50/50 chance that both Agholor and Wynn are traded before the end of camp as we start to see more and more injuries on other teams ( Bucs lost multiple OL, Broncos lost a WR)

  • I don't think they cut/trade Perkins.. they new he was going to have a transition. He's going to get at least this year imo
  • Anfernee Jennings has really shown out.. going to be interesting to see how much playing time he gets
  • From everything I've heard Uche is doing well... they are too thin to not have Uche or Perkins play. I think Uche ends up being the pass rush specialist while Jennings is the run focused, set the edge guy

Day 7

Wednesday was 'correctional day', back out of pads and into shells - Hambright got a lot of first reps, Wilkerson and Zappe hooked up well, Mack Wilson was getting first team reps. Very dialled down day though. Ty Monty was the busiest player being used both as RB and WR. Mac threw a pick on a miscommunication with Parker

Day 8

Tre Nixon showed up - caught 4 from 4 including back of the EZ TD against Butler

Godchaux - it's time we start adding his name to this. He stuffed 2 runs, and made a few tackles for losses. He's busting through

Offense is still a work in progress. There was a three-play stretch that included a coverage sack, run stuff by Davon Godchaux, and throwaway from Mac Jones. They ended that period with an incompletion to Jonnu Smith in which he seemed to take credit for running the wrong route.

Ronnie Perkins - Again, his name comes up. 1-on-1 losses to Wynn and Herron, he also got locked up a couple times on a speed rush

Malcom Butler - Gave the TD up to Nixon and generally left the receivers a lot of space

My biggest surprise this offseason is still the fact that they haven't gone full into a spread, Alabama style offense like Mac is used to. Especially lacking an OC, you'd think switching it up to what he is most comfortable with would make sense. This is especially true if the plan is to get O'Brien next year after his contract runs out at Alabama.

This next week almost seems like it's going to determine a major amount of the offense to me. If they are awful during the joint practices and pre-season.. you've got to think they are going to scrap most of what doesn't work and focus on more of what they did last year, right?? You only have so long before the season starts so you really don't have a huge amount of time to fix things. They don't have an easy schedule like in years past, so it's not crazy to think they start 1-3  or even 0-4 if the Offense can't figure things out.

that was always his MO, but he was smart and quick enough to attack the ball once it was in the air. He might not be young enough for that anymore.

I don't think he has a chance of being cut, I would expect him to be the #3 CB to start the season that they rotate in for red zone help. When you don't have room to burn him he's still amazing at playing the ball.

The hope would be that Jack Jones improves enough to climb the depth chart second half of the season, but assuming Mitchell can give you average CB play they could have a decent CB room this year. The only problem is that they are playing some all time WR's this year so decent CB room likely won't be good enough. The offense is going to need to put it together and keep up with the high powered offenses

Here my thought on some of the comments here.

1.  Ronnie  Perkins is a bust. I had one look at his tape when he was drafted and saw a major fault in his game. He has no flex in his hips. There is no way he can beat a NFL OT with his game. Hated the pick.

2.  I not real concerned with the CBs.  IMO it all comes down to the front of the defense. All I want is serviceable CBs that can at least challenge WR. You can't stop today's offense from the back end, its impossible. The rules set up DBs for failure. They only way to stop an offense is pressure and hope the QBs make a mistake.

Examples, look at the Bill DBs (really good unit) they couldn't stop Mahomes with what, seconds on the clock! Or look at Brady he almost pulled off beating the Rams with his best WRs injured!!!!  IMO there is no DB unit that can stop a good NFL offense.

3. Based on what I have read I could be dead wrong about Thorton as a draft choice.  Also still hate the Strange pick. I don't care if he's ALL Pro in the future.

I don't like a WR that has never been taught how to play the position. IMO that's a risky choice when you have IMO better players still on the board such as Sky Moore. I also didn't like his size/weight.

Question,   What the 411 on Cameron McGrone?  Not much has been said about him. I read in this post that he's borderline making the team.

nothing notable in camp so far. We likely see him get a lot of run in pre-season

I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed and think he could even be a surprise cut / Foxboro Flu IR candidate. At the end of the day, that draft could end up with so many hits that I can deal with him not working out.

Marcus Jones could be the key player here.. if he can command playing time in the slot, that gives the team more options to move around Jon Jones. I think we may be surprised how much they use him on the outside to shadow really fast receivers like Tyreek Hill. Jones looks like he could be a home run pick tbo, I'm really excited to watch him play. Shaun Wade is better than people give him credit for too, can play inside and outside .. he isn't a star but he can contribute. I think Bryant is going to have a hard time sticking around, may even get traded late him camp for a day 3 pick.

Mitchell seems like he will give you average CB play and Jack Jones may be able to take over that spot by the end of the season. If Jones can solidify himself as a starting caliber CB that goes a long way.

He has been with the scout team basically all of camp. I wonder if his lack of playing time has been a little less about him and more a reflection of the fact that Mack Wilson has performed incredibly well. It has given them more of an opportunity to treat him like a rookie coming off a major injury and ease him along. I agree that I would expect him to get a lot of playing time in the preseason games, so we should have an idea of his potential in a month.

Side Note: Tyquan Thornton!! So excited to see him in preseason. We are going to hear A LOT about Agholor being traded in a couple weeks if Thornton is able to light teams up in joint practices.

Day 10 - hold onto your butts...

I guess you could take this day one of two ways. Either a positive day if you're defensively minded, but given we have Mac Jones and an uncertain playcalling situation, I'm going with glass half empty. The offense was chastized.

Tracking their first two 11-on-11 sessions, here were the results:

First drive:

False start (Trent Brown)

Run stuff

Incomplete

Run stuff (Ja’Whaun Bentley)

Play-action throwaway

Short completion to Tyquan Thornton

Marcus Jones pass-breakup

Play-action, blown up by defense

Anfernee Jennings would-be sack

Run stuff

Short completion to Jakobi Meyers

Second drive:

Short completion to Jakobi Meyers

Blown up by defense (Christian Barmore), Mac Jones scramble

Completion to Jonnu Smith

Matthew Judon sack

Incomplete to Hunter Henry (miscommunication)

Blown up by defense (Josh Uche)

Completion to Jakobi Meyers

Incomplete to Nelson Agholor

Blown up by defense (Anfernee Jennings)

Incomplete to DeVante Parker (miscommunication)

The run game is non-existent, right now.

Tyquan Thornton - again his name comes up. Even though offense struggled, this was his best day probably. Smoked Mitchell and Butler 1 vs 1.

The Jones' - Marcus had a pass breakup, Jack had two. Marcus was in starter reps and pretty much owned Meyers. Jack had a pick to go with his two breakups

Devante Parker - again, his name comes up. Won a 50/50 ball again for a TD...again. This time against Jon Jones.

Ronnie Perkins - AGAIN! Spent time with scout team after losing most of his 1-on-1s.

Offensive Line - when it was just 7 on 7, the offense was fine as Mac could spread it. Soon as they made it 11 on 11, that's where the offense was owned. Too much coming through

Kendrick Bourne - Two drops on his first two targets, he was the target on the interception and didn't make a play on the ball

Rolling [sort of] rankings;

1. Tyquan Thornton

2. Christian Barmore

3. DeVante Parker
