dll2000
Bears have been asking for 2.5 or 2.6 billion if memory serves. Quite a bit more than Carolina or Jacksonville.

And new media deals have risen that a lot since then. This is with a stadium with a poor return. They can finance a new stadium with no public money and without selling a stake. They just don't want to. Because why would they when other owners get big public money. It would likely lesson their individual take home pay for a number of years. If they get it built quick and put a bunch of stuff up like Wrigleyville did. They did it on their own and are making money. I think Bears will make it back quick. They can pay down principal and call it a day. They are so conservative. They can't really lose. They have a monopoly position and a huge brand. Worse case scenario of any outcome is they have to sell a minority stake in team. Every year they wait they lose 100s of millions as costs go up and it is extra money they aren't making. Comes a point (soon) when waiting for some free money may cost you even if you get it.

Their financial reluctance and apparent short sightedness makes me think more and more that they’re looking to get out of the football business once the matriarch passes. From a business standpoint, why incur hundreds of millions in costs you very likely won’t be around long enough to make back?

Wasn't Jacksonville the team that's always rumored to be London-bound? How would you rate the Bear's case for "pay us or we gone?"

I doubt they even ever threaten it publicly even if they get zero public dollars. The backlash here would be big. And the economics of leaving don’t make any sense to me given the size of their fan base. But that doesn’t mean there is no chance. I am sure they have quietly explored it and will continue to do so in future.

dll2000
You see this is what pisses me off. Last night at Cubs Brewers game an escalator collapsed injuring many. Someone broke a femur which is a life long injury. Greg Braggs of CHGO got hurt on it as well. They knew stadium needed extensive repairs. Do they get on it? Do they temporarily close? No they haggle with public for money. And they got it - 500 million. But they obviously had not done the repairs yet. https://pbswisconsin.org/news-item/evers-signs-500-million-plan-to-fund-repairs-upgrades-at-brewers-stadium/#:~:text=The Brewers say the 22-year-old stadium needs extensive, and escalators need work%2C according to the team Edited June 30 by dll2000

Personally I would say that it's non-existent as long as the team is under McCaskey ownership. They are far too traditional and the Bears are "Chicago's Team". Even under new ownership there is no way the NFL would approve a move and surrender the Chicago market. They'll get a new stadium somewhere and that will be it.
