Flint

The goal of the offense this week is to balance between the run and the pass while using many different looks so the defense can't hone in on certain aspects. Josh Allen is indisputably the main guy and he will be relied to use his arm (both passing and stiff) and occasionally his legs to pilot the offense. The starting lineup lists 2 RBs but they won't simply be split backs most of the time. At any time one could be used in the receiving game from the back or in the slot (or H back role). Both are capable pass blockers. Kamara would see more time in the slot than Conner. Devin Singletary, who  has chemistry with Allen would come in for some plays in chunks to give the other backs some rest, as would Rashaad Penny.

Deebo Samuel and DJ Moore will start on the outside but Samuel will also see snaps from the inside along with Wan'Dale Robinson. Russell Gage and Kenny Golladay would fill in on the outside when Deebo goes inside. Austin Hooper and Hayden Hurst will be asked to both block and be receivers.

Along with the skill players blocking we feel we have an offensive line that can hold off the blitz and easily give Josh Allen the time to release his passes, which he is already quick on. There is power to get to the second level and attack the linebackers and the interior lineman also have the athleticism to pull and essentially be extra blockers on the outside. Taylor Decker and A.J. Cann would cycle in if necessary. But Decker is the main guy on our 6th OL looks.

The strength of the other team in this matchup is probably the safeties and interior DL. As previously mentioned we will try to keep the defense honest and give multiple roles to our players to keep the defense on their toes. Deep throws to the middle of the field or wherever Byard and Williams are will be limited when they appear to be in zone. We will focus on attacking the cornerbacks and test them often as they appear to be the weak links. That should open up some lanes for or running backs as the linebackers may need to help in coverage more than they'd like to.

We will try to show some bubble screens early because A) we have the talent, and B) it should help mitigate the rush from their couple talented DLs. We might add in some extra toss plays and counters with the pulling blocker helping to double team either Cam Jordan or Jonathan Allen so they don’t become a big factor. We’ll also counter off our earlier plays by showing something they’ve seen, but rushing Allen the opposite way instead of handing it off, or working a bubble screen or TE screen in behind it.

25% of snaps – 1 RB – 1TE – 3WR
23% of snaps – 2 RB – 2 WR – 1 TE
15% of snaps – 2RB - 3 WR
15% of snaps – 1 RB – 2 TE - 2WR
10% of snaps – 1 RB – 4WR
6% of snaps – 1TE – 4WR
6% of snaps - 6OL - 1 RB - 2 TE - 1 WR/RB (largely goal-line or short yardage looks)

- Because of the type of backs Cancun employs, we're going to focus more on our athleticism up front at DT. Wilkins will play between 70-80% of the snaps. Jarrett will probably land between 60-70% next to him. Simmons will unsurprisingly be the main sub in to give those guys a breather, especially on early downs. Because of Mahomes' escapability, we're going to focus our pass rush inside this week and ask the DE's to stay more contain responsible, being aware for screens or PA-bootlegs. Rushing out wide, but not over-pursuing. Bosa will be the star of the show. The other side will be a combination of Clowney/Deatrich Wise, based on the situation and who is fresher. The occasional 3rd & long we will put a fresh Tarron Jackson outside and let Clowney's versatility show up inside. Or stunting Clowney/Wilkins on the downs when neither needs a breather. We're facing a slightly young/under-skilled OL overall, and believe we can wreak some havoc with our talent and creativity. If Bakhtiari isn't healthy enough to hit the field for this one I think we might just win this one up front.

- We'll be in Nickel/Dime a large portion of this game. On earlier downs we'll probably let Al-Shaair be the inside player, asking him to spy Mahomes while covering inside runs. Occasionally we'll employ a Safety combination of the Honeybadger, Adrian Amos, and Darnell Savage, using Mathieu as the Swiss-Army knife, do-it-all weapon to exploit options and keep the offense guessing. Mike Hilton will exclusively be utilized in the slot, splitting some duties with Mathieu as he moves around the formation. Amos will largely be the stay-at-home option and keep the Runningback/slot WR in front of him. And the remaining Savage on these triple safety looks will be the deep man, helping guard Sutton or Olave over the top.

- Early on we're going to show LB blitz a few times, but never bring it. We will nickel blitz Mike Hilton/Tyrann Mathieu occasionally after showing the blitz inside. In the second half we'll hopefully be playing with a lead and we'll be a bit more conservative. But after faking the blitz from the LB'ers early, we might bring 1 or 2 in the second half, hoping their OL continues to believe it is just another bluff. We will likely employ some stunts with  the LB around the Edge after showing our pressure up the middle and see if we can't confuse the younger tackles.

- We will employ a mix of Cover-2 / Cover-3 looks, with an emphasis on trying to keep the outside CB's in man coverage, with our LB/Safeties splitting assignments based on the offensive formation and players on the field. Mathieu will be asked to help spy underneath throws and outside runs in Cover-3 looks. In dime we will split the "LB" duties between Mathieu and Anthony Walker based on who is on the field. If Jusczyk is out there or Schultz & an RB are on the field we will try to keep Walker out there, but bring in Mathieu for 4/5WR sets.

Offense

The weakest part of the Flint defense is the middle of the field, with none of their linebackers particularly impressive in coverage or defending the run. As such, our gameplan will be heavy on play-action and run-pass options. In the first half, we want a close to 50/50 split between run and pass from primarily from under center to force the backers and safeties up into the box and open up the middle and deep portions of the field for Mahomes to pick up chunk yardage. We’ll move closer to a 65-35 pass-run split out of shotgun and pistol formations in the second half once the defense is worn down.

At running back, we are looking at a 55-35 split of playing time for Aaron Jones and Rhamondre Stevenson. Inside the 10 on either side of the field, Stevenson will be used exclusively with Juszczyk getting some run as a lead blocker and offensive weapon in place of our third receiver. The remaining 10% of the time, we want to have both backs on the field in the pistol. We’re focusing our rushing behind the right side of our line, with Zion and Cosmi excelling in run blocking and Schultz lined up alongside them.

In the passing game, the reads for Mahomes will be 1. Sutton, 2. Jones, 3. Schultz, with Schultz being the second read on plays where Stevenson is on the field. If Flint opts to field a Cover-2 shell to prevent the big play, we are happy to rip up the middle of their defense with Schultz, Jones, and Moore, at least one of whom will be facing a favorable matchup in coverage. If this is the base defense they want to work out of, Moore takes Sutton’s place as the primary read.

We don’t believe Flint has a No. 1 corner who can match up physically with Sutton one on one, while the run game and play action will force a mismatch for either Jones or Schultz depending on how Flint chooses to cover them. Sutton will be working intermediate and deep routes on the outside, with Schultz working underneath and across the middle of the field on slants and crossing routes. Elijah Moore gives us an exciting secondary option at receiver on these plays with Schultz drawing more of the defense’s attention. Moore will be working the seam and crossing routes to take advantage of Flint’s poor slot corner play and/or force Flint to play safety instead of a backer, opening up more running space for Jones/Stevenson. Olave will stay on the field in the redzone and short yardage situations as the No. 2 receiver, using his size and hands as a move-the-chains threat. We will also mix in a few two tight end sets to have Kylen Granson on the field  to further go after the weak Flint linebacker depth chart.

Defense

Headed into Week 1 vs. New Orleans will be a test early on this season. Going against Josh Allen, Melvin Gordon, Deebo, Michael Thomas, and D.J. Moore will provide unique personnel matchups for us.

We are going to gameplan in such a way that we will force someone other than Deebo Samuel to beat us, and we are going to deploy a lot of nickel, big nickel, and dime personnel throughout the course of the game, only bringing in a third linebacker or extra lineman to match 2 TE or 3 back (including TE/H/FB) personnel.

We envision seeing a lot of 3+ WR personnel packages (including the hybrid Deebo RB/WR), as we anticipate him testing our corners and nickel personnel early and often. If Deebo lines up in the backfield, we will match Byard as a box safety in run support with Pitre as the Apex/Star defender.

For a visual, this would be the base out of a 3 strong look with a weak TE. Pitre will align in the APEX to deny the inside, bumping his man if he decides to go vertical, and passing him off to Byard. Byard will be the alley fitter outside of the #2 WR.

For a visual, Pitre will be playing the top Outside Leverage to the #2 WR, Williams will be the high free safety, and Byard will be playing the bottom outside leverage S on the TE. Werner will be the WLB to the RB out of the backfield and in the TE flat.

We will be sinking the Mike to help in the intermediate/deep middle with Williams as the CAP on top, with Cam Jordan and Rousseau as the EDGE/Contain to keep Josh Allen INSIDE the pocket with an added curl/flat linebacker in the event that he wants to escape on the inside or dump it off.

In a traditional 3 wide look, we will utilize this base defense:

still-2-bam-piece.png

This will give us the capability of lining both ends up in wide 9s to contain Allen, or else playing a head up JAM technique on the TE to also set the edge, with Pitre head up on #2 since he will have help inside (Werner short, Williams deep S). Notice Byard on the back end of the 1 on 1 top side to give help to our corner who we have given the look of having 1 on 1 coverage, but he doesn't. He has help over the top and is denying the inside move.

From a pressure standpoint, Josh Allen excels vs. the blitz, so we will be choosing our spots and doing a lot of presnap movement and stunting our DL on long yardage obvious passing situations. We like the ability for Jordan and Rousseau to both move inside to DT on long yardage situations.

We also like the athletic advantage of a NT loop with one of our interior rushers:

We will be varying looks to show pressure presnap and then drop our coverage MOST of the time out a variety of looks:

However, we will be taking a few shots selectively, especially in the Red Zone or on early downs that could blow up running plays or force Allen to unload it early on play-action passes:

We also like the delay blitz look to keep Allen contained in the pocket while forcing him to throw it earlier than he would like:
