Rome Eternals

It's BizzBowl week!

Formations /Approach

We are going to lean heavily on the spread game this week in a lot of four and five WR sets. However, we will still run some 2 RB, 3wr, 11 and jumbo sets as well. Especially moreso in the second half.  We are going to maintain a pass heavy offense. Running about a 60-40 pass to run ratio. Obviously we'll switch that up if we need to run some clock at any point.

The passing game

We are going back to the our four wide as Anchorage has shown the tendency to go zone only in four to five wr sets. Thus we are preparing this week for all of our zone buster routes and plays.

One thing Anchorage also likes to do for reasons I don't fathom is to follow the wr in motion to mask man or zone when they mainly only play zone against four wide.  Thus we are going to hit a lot of swing screens to McKinnon and Harris opposite the trips as there simply won't be that many people to cover.  It will leave Simmons one on one to make the tackle or its a big gain. Simmons, for the athlete that he is, is not a super one on one tackler and we've seen Najee stiff arm guys like him to the turf easily. .

We per usual have our floods, seams, levels and new this week to attack the zones.  If we are seeing majority cover two we are gonna hit that space on the sideline between the corner and safety or on the deep side middle post to juju or Palmer .   We have a savvy group of WR who know how too find the hole in the zone and sit in them.  Herbert can extend plays with his legs if needed to find angles to hit the WR. Waddle is especially dangerous with the ball in his hands so we are going to scheme combo routes to get him open. We definitely think he can run past any of the it corners in a cover three unless they are plying super off coverage.  If we see it, Herbert and Waddle know to hit the quick pass where one missed tackle is a huge gain    Juju will be primarily the motion man from the slot into trips but our other WR will play both outside and inside.  Renfrow will also only be an inside guy.

Regardless of what zone they are in we are more than happy to dink and dunk our way down the field underneath the zone coverages or letting our WR find holes in the zone and sit in them.  Renfrow will be used on third downs for Palmer as he is Mr First down for just this reason   We want to seek out Hufanga in coverage as he's a trevon Diggs jump the first thing he sees type. We are gonna run someone at him and then throw over or below him based upon the play call as he's gonna go with his first read.

If for whatever reason we see them going man, we are going to attack Baker and Johnson mercilessly.  They'll likely be giving Baker help and if that's the case we'll use him as the rub route issue and allow our other WR to use him as a pick.  If we get Waddle ordered Cooper isolated on Johnson, that is a matchup we want to exploit

The other thing we are going to to incorporate more is the RB screen game which will slow down their edge rushers as well. Wr screens will be less commonly used but will be used if we see off coverage

Up Front, the running game

Going spread takes the guessing game out of where Micah Parsons will be coming from as he'll be lined up as the edge.   We obviously need to have help there so he'll get chipped from a RB when not a swing screen or Juju will bump him from his inside slot position depending on what play we are running.   On the other side Aidan Hutchinson is a big time talent but he's kind of hit the rookie wall with only 2.5 sacks since the calendar flipped to November.  Oliver poses a threat so he'll get help from the center position while we trust both our guards one on one with Jones.

Up front we still love our line in the run game .  The second advantage of getting Parsons on the edge is that he is undersized and we will run right at him.  Daquon Jones is also been more a pass rusher this season so we have no problem pounding the rock to their side, especially if they are against our stud Lindstrom, Ramcyk side.  We also will run at Hutchinson who surprisingly struggled recently in this aspect as well.   With Hubbard out we also like our chances in jumbo sets, as he was Anchorages best run stopping edge.  We want to get past the line and make Simmons do something in the run game as he has been God awful at it this year.  He's been so bad in the box, they've actually used him at corner this year more than as a LB type.

We want to attack the edges especially with all their defenders lined up directly across from our WR it leaves a fairly open side opposite it.   For this we add in a wrinkle we have sprinkled in at various times this year. We're gonna stay in the four wide and bring in Taysom Hill to run some qb sweeps with Harris leading the way seeking out Tufamga or however you spell that dudes name who to be fair is a heat seeking missile out there

We also have no problem lining up with two TE and a FB and play some old school smash mouth football with a lack of actual LB on the Anchorage roster with walker being the only true LB on the team and he's been unimpressive his rookie year, but it is Atlanta so it may not be all him .

The QB

Justin Herbert has been outstanding this year and we are going to lean on him this week to make the right reads.  We obviously have a way better line than he has in real life life and when given time this year, his rocket arm has been deadly

Tempo

We are going up tempo this game.  Not as much to tire out the front, but moreso to increase the numbers of snaps.  They have a really solid defense but we have the type of play makers that every snap we take is one more chance for them to take it to the house off a missed tackle.  We don't feel the opposing offense can keep up and they, knowing this, will in fact try to slow the game down when they have the ball

Defense

Up front

This week we welcome back interior pass rush specialist Denico Autry back to the DL rotation with his 8 sacks in 11 games to help out with some interior pressure on passing downs. Purcell will still work early downs as the run stuffer but it's nice to get more interior pressure.  In very long situations Houston will also play int replacing Tomlinson.  On the outside we still have AFC sack leader Matt Judon and Jaelan Phillips who as Scoundrel has mentioned, gets doubled a ton on the other side.  Lawson and Houston are greet depth pieces for as needed.  The Anchorage line is a stalwart group.  Andrew Thomas has been outstanding, as has Ragnow (though at center not guard. He has played there before though at least, even if it was years ago)   The center to right side of the line has been a little suspect however and we feel we can get some pressure here and force Joe cool to roll against his strong side.

Anchorage has consistently been helping out with their TE on the right side. If we see this trend continuing, we will line up Bolton across from the TE and knock him into smithereens before going after Burrow as Likely won't be expecting that in chip help.

The Secondary

In this game we are going straight Bill Belichek and eliminating Anchorage best weapon. Chase is going to be seeing double coverage all game long no matter where he lines up.  Bland has shown to have excellent ball skills with four picks in his last four games. He also has enough height to help in jump ball situations. When chase is lined up outside he will have inside leverage with Hooker over the top.  Chase may get a couple catches but he is not going to have a big day

With Chase taken care of we lock down dpj with super stud Marlon Humphrey and DJ Reed gets Hollywood brown who has been anything but Hollywood with less than 40 yards a game over the past month.  Isaiah likely is third on his own teams depth chart and has 8 catches for 80 yards since the beginning of November.  Milano will get Jacobs out of the backfield.  Cisco will generally be our cover one deep robber shading to Brown.  However he will play closer to the line than a normal deep safety at the snap to help with the running game. His excellent speed helps him to recover.  Milano has free reign to blitz or play the under robber if the RB are in to block, the same with Bolton  Rodgers gets wr 4 and Carter gets WR 5. If they go two TE for whatever reason, Campbell gets the second TE and Reed takes Blands role.  We will occasionally mix in some zone looks but even when we do, Chase has a guy assigned to him

The Run game

Last week, Anchorage came out pass heavy to take advantage of the IC secondary.  We expect a larger run percentage this week with our corner talent.  Our team has been gaming for the zone rushing attack that Anchorage prefers and we are ensuring gap discipline to turn everything inside to the meat wall and LBs.  Jacobs has had an excellent season. Luckily for us he's coming off his worst performance of the season. We trust our front to eliminate big gains in the run game and having Cisco in the box gives us an extra defender.  Any kind of sweep or pitch plays really work to our advantage with our lb crew speed and recognition.

The plan

Make someone not named Chase beat us in the passing Game

Key the run

Trust the talent

Anchorage Trappers

Overview:
We are finally here. After years of building the team our way, we have made it to the coveted Bizz Bowl. Our journey doesn’t end here, however. Not until we are holding that trophy will we have accomplished what we returned this season to do. For the fans, team, division, city, and state, this is for you all. We respect our opponents and believe they are worthy adversaries. We want to get the ball in the hands of our weapons in both the running and passing game allowing Burrow to work his magic while preventing the Rome offense from getting going playing disciplined gap control defense, winning our pass coverage matchups and weaponizing Micah to make Herbert feel his presence every snap.

Offense: 3 Wide (40%), 4 Wide (30%), 3WR/2RB (30%)
We will run a mix of formations this week, primarily our 3 wides and 4 wide. We won’t list heavy goaline formations as a percentage as those are more situational, but we will use them as needed. We look for a balanced offensive attack and using a healthy dose of RPOs we won’t give an exact Pass/Run play split. The Rome offense gets a lot of praise so we want to make sure we are keeping them off the field, controlling the clock, making the big plays when they are there, and putting our offense in control of this game.

•In Joe We Trust.

•Get our running game going through our inside/outside zone schemes mixing in a heavy dose of RPOs.

•Attack the Rome passing defense at all depths using rub routes, flooding and combo routes.

•Get Chase on the move presnap and line him up all over the formation including some plays out of the  backfield.

•Double the left edge defender with our RG/RT in pass pro and have our back assist with any inside to outside pressure.

•Depend on Burrow to improvise and use his escapability to extend plays.

Burrow:
We fully entrust in Burrow to captain our ship. We as a team believe with Joe at the helm there isn’t a moment too big or a game that this team can’t win. This team doesn’t get this far without some Burrow magic and we are looking to him for the ice in his veins playmaking and his proven winner poise. We know when we need him most, Joe will deliver.

Zone Blocking Scheme:
Rome has a stout defense but we believe we can move the ball on the ground using our Zone Blocking Scheme. Inside and Outside zone will play off of each other as the defense naturally focuses in to stop the inside zone we will slash them with the outside zone, and as they spread out to over-compensate, to adjust to our outside zone, we will gash them inside. With the run stoutness of the Rome interior we believe our zone to get the holes/gaps moving and catch those big bodies off balance allowing our backs to use their vision and carve up yards will lead us to success against this front. We will allow Burrow to audible inside/outside zone based on different fronts.

RPO, 2RB Sets, and RB Play Distribution:
We will utilize a healthy dose of RPO‘s to slow down the Rome ends and force them into a chess match. When the backers force down to aggressively assist in the run or meet at the mesh point, we will be able to attack their zone/coverage responsibility as well. When in 2RB sets and running RPOs we bring the additional RB not getting the run action crossing behind the line as a quick passing option for Burrow. We will line up Chase at RB2 on some third down and short plays and use him in this way. We will at times motion Chase out of 4 wide to that 2RB role and vice versa. We will also run our traditional zone out of 2RB with Dobbins and Jacobs paired together. We will split the primary back play percentage in all formations 60/40 Jacobs/Dobbins and Jacobs will see most of the 3rd down work.

General Passing Game:
We are going to move Chase around presnap every play to help determine coverage while also getting him on the move for quick separation to utilize his YAC and make it difficult to double him. We will have a diversified plan of attack with him. Working the short to deep field from the outside and slot through a multitude of routes. We are going to work some back shoulders throws, a Burrow to Chase speciality. Our other receivers will see their fair share of targets as Burrow picks apart ideal matchups and we combo route/sail route to attack all levels of the defense. We will always provide at least one quick passing option underneath as a safety net/yac opportunity. We welcome back Brandin Cooks just when we need him the most. We are going to motion into some twins and bunch formations to flood the Rome zones and rub route their man coverage. As mentioned we are running RPOs and this will provide us some quick pass options for high percentage throws. We will use our TE to help flood zones, stretch seams and provide underneath safety nets for Burrow. Burrow does a tremendous job spreading the ball around and finding open weapons, if we notice a neglect to the TE by Rome or quick open shots due to LBer/S blitzing we will look their way more often.

Play Action, Back Routes, and Receiver Play Distribution:
We will use our zone running game to set up play action and create more separation for our receivers against the Rome coverage. We will get Burrow out on some boots and manipulate the pocket to mitigate the pass rush. We will use our backs to chip and release to the flats and an occasional wheel. We will run some screens to slow down the pass rush as well. Out of 2RB sets we will run some wheels, swings and attack the middle of the defense. Chase will get some of these opportunities when in the backfield. We will utilize Cooks at X and Hollywood will rotate between the Outside Z and Slot with Chase. Jones/DPJ will rotate as our 4th receiver in four wide.

Pass Protection:
We believe the primary up front threat from Rome is their outside pass rush. While Tomlinson can get after it inside and Purcell isn’t completely useless there we believe we can matchup with those two and any of the Rome DT’s in pass protection with McCoy and Ragnow. So we will utilize Corbett to help double the left edge rusher with Havenstein while keeping his head on a swivel for any delayed inside blitzes. Judon is a heck of a rusher and if they utilize him on the left he will be getting doubled. If they use Judon on the right we entrust in Andrew Thomas to hold his own. With the utilization of RPOs, screens, underneath safety nets, and backs chipping this will also help slow down the Rome pass rush. Our backs will chip inside out keeping their head on a swivel to pick up delayed backer and safety blitzes. This will also help when Rome wants to move an edge rusher inside. We will also at times utilize a back as a stand in pass blocker especially if we are seeing overloads or heavy middle blitzing. We will use our TE in 3 wide to help chip with Thomas if we see it’s needed or if they overload to one side even if on the double team side. Our line will pass off stunts and twists and play technically sound football. We will depend on Joe to utilize his escapability and legs to extend plays when necessary.

Defense: Nickel Base against 3 Wide, Dime against 4/5 wide, 5-2 against 2TE/Heavy Formations. 4-3 against 2WR/2RB/1TE sets
We expect Rome to want to spread us out but we will have counters for the heavy sets as well. We will come out in a base Nickel but will play Dime against 4/5 wide. We have the speed at LBer to matchup well with their 3WR/2RB sets without sacrificing our size on the field. Micah will be used in a multitude of ways as our Lion role making it difficult for Rome to key on him.

•Gap accountability. Funnel runs back inside, with Hufanga free to hunt and clean up.

•5-2 front against heavy sets.

•Man (Predominantly Single High with some Cover 2 Shell) and Zone (Predominantly Cover 3 with some Cover 2) mix. Mix in press/press show to bail outside to disguise coverage.

•Entrust in Horn and Surtain to matchup with their biggest threats.

•Micah Parsons The Lion: Take over the game in a multitude of ways.

•Technically sound and smart pass rush plans. Keep contain.

Run Defense:
We again are starting Ed Oliver and Daquan Jones inside this week. Highsmith and Chubb will start as stand up edges for us in this game. Highsmith has played very well against the run this year. Against the spread type of 3/4 wide formations of Rome we believe he is built to attack this type of offense and still hold his own against heavier fronts. Floyd and Hutch will backup our edges and Gaines and Davis will back up our interior and provide us with the ability to keep our guys fresh with a rotation.

Against 3 wide and 4 wide our ends will primarily have C gaps with our NT taking either A/A or an A/B by two gapping. Our UT has the other A or B gap while Simmons has the other B gap (Hufanga has it if in 4wide). If they have a TE in their 3 wide Hufanga has D gap to that side unless the back splits out which then there is an empty set with Micah responsible for Herbert. This frees Micah to hunt Herbert/RB and meet at mesh points and if no TE and 3 wide it frees Hufanga to hunt down the ball carrier as well. Allowing these two to not have a gap assignment allows them to be ready to snuff out screens and draws as well.

If they go 2TE or other heavy formations we will introduce a 5-2 front, with Jones at NT, Oliver and Gaines at T’s, and Chubb and Highsmith at Ends. Micah and Simmons are at backer, with Hufanga at SS in the box, Bates at FS, and Surtain and Horn as the corners. 4-3 against 2WR/2RB/1TE sets with Budda as Stud next to Parsons and Simmons at LBer if two actual RBs. If Ricard is the second RB/FB we play Murray instead of Budda. In some 3rd and long/clear passing situations against 3 wide, we will play Micah at edge opposite Highsmith and bring in Budda as the Stud moving Simmons to MLB. We will do this much more often against 4 wide with Hufanga playing the Stud. We will play gap responsible defense in all formations making sure every gap is accounted for even with motions and offensive personnel changes.

Pass Defense:
We are going to once again play a mix of Man (Predominantly Single High with some Cover 2 shell) and Zone (Predominantly Cover 3 with some Cover 2). We entrust in Horn and Surtain to matchup in man/zone with Waddle and Cooper. Against 3 wide, whenever Waddle or Cooper is in the slot, Horn has that player in man and tracks them across the formation in the slot presnap even in zone. Whichever one is outside Surtain has that one and also tracks them presnap in zone. If both are outside Horn has Waddle and Surtain has Cooper while SMB has the slot. If we are running cover 2 when Waddle is in the slot, Horn will drop from nickel to deep half pairing with Bates to form the two deep coverage. We will again play a mix of press/press show to bail on the outside to disguise coverage. We will show press in Cover 3 but never press Waddle in this coverage as we get a slight head start on bailing to our deep 3rd in respect of his speed and having enough recovery space for double moves while remaining close enough in coverage to break down on underneath throws. Surtain and Horn are the type of technicians needed to execute this. In single high/cover 2/Cover 3 Bates will always shade to Waddle’s side to help not tip coverage and assist against the threat he is over the top. We entrust in Bates’ range to get to where he needs to be and help shut down the big plays deep.

Against 4 wide we will be in Dime with Budda Baker as our Dime. Hufanga replaces Simmons at Stud. Despite our trailing and matching coverage Budda only lines up at Dime and we will ensure he plays all of his zones in the flat to intermediate parts of the field even when they go bunch. In our Dime we will primarily run zone, with the seldom man play to keep the offense on their toes. When in man, Hufanga will cover RB. Our MLB will either drop into a middle zone/spy, or blitz when in man. If in four wide and Cooper goes to the slot with Waddle also in the slot we will leave Surtain outside and match Horn on Waddle, so Budda can stay in that Dime role and we will just play zones. Against 5 wide we play this same alignment but Parsons moves to edge and Simmons to MLB and run our zones. We will play disciplined and aware against rub routes and zone flooding.

In man against the 3WR/2RB formations, Hufanga primarily has McKinnon/Swift in that order. Simmons has the other RB that Hufanga does not have. We will send Hufanga on an occasional blitz so when he does Micah takes his coverage responsibilities. Against 1TE sets when in man we will have Simmons cover TE1 and Hufanga RB. If it’s a 2WR/2RB/1TE set Budda has the second RB or Murray has Ricard in man if he is the FB. Against 2TE when in man, we are in our 5 man front and Micah has TE2 when we run man. We will only run Man Single High or Cover 3 in this formation. When in zone in our 5-2 there are times we will drop Highsmith into a flat zone and blitz Micah. When Micah is on the edge in some of those 3rd and long/clear passing situations against 3 wide this is where we will see more man coverage with a Cover 2 Shell with Hufanga dropping back to that other half shell. As players track presnap and align with bunches and twins we will shift zones accordingly in all alignments.

The Lion and Pass Rush:
We will use Micah in a multitude of ways. Blitzing to get after Herbert from all over the front, QB spy, attacking QB runs to blow up RPOs, Edge reps, Zone drop to disrupt crossing routes, and replacement coverage for Hufanga on his occasional blitz. We will move Micah all around, show and go, show and drop, and no show and go, we want to make him as difficult for the offense to account for as possible when at backer. Just like Burrow on offense we wouldn’t be here without Micah’s hustle and ability to take over a game on defense. We know this isn’t too big for him. We will have our Dline ready to menace Herbert while playing smart technically sound football. We have worked on pass rush plans and diversifying pass rush moves to get after the Rome Oline. We have worked and worked on keeping contain in the run and pass rush game and will make sure to keep this offense bottled up. James Houston will again work as a pass rush specialist getting some reps off the edge against four wide on clear passing downs.

I honestly feel both gameplans were great but in most comparisons I make (that can be compared) like O vs D scheme of one team vs the O vs D scheme of the other and so forth, I feel Anchorage has a slight edge in almost everything but a few moderate edges like offensive and defensive versatility. Rome's advantage is clearly in the 3 and 4 wide but Anchorage does a great job of defending in the secondary and it's only a slight edge over Anchorages 3 and 4 wides vs Rome's D. Anchorage however makes up with that with the TE and RB game. Talent is about equal in RBs at least, but the usage is better by Anchorage and I think the team as a whole is much more well rounded for a dynamic game.

Frankly, I am not a fan of the Rome gameplan here. Isaiah Simmons has 5 missed tackles this season, but I don't really see the point in even bringing him up when Anchorage is taking him off the field for Budda Baker against Rome's usual 4 WR formation anyways. Dinking and dunking is probably the right call with a quarterback who has 2 touchdowns in his last four games and 14 in the 12 games since the end of September. Najee Harris has one run over 14 yards all year, so there's no reason to believe the running game is going to be explosive enough to force Anchorage to respect it (why is Harris starting over Swift at this point?? why is Swift not even playing??). Ja'marr Chase would ******* annihilate DaRon Bland and Malik Hooker. Even if he doesn't, Cisco is playing up to the line again, leaving nobody over the top against Brandin Cooks and Marquise Brown, two guys who, if literally nothing else, can definitely beat guys deep on foot speed alone. Having zero respect for the deep ball, especially with Joe Burrow throwing to those guys instead of Davis Mills and Colt McCoy/Trace McSorley, is going to and should lead to a lot of embarrassment.

It's good to see Denico Autry back and providing help from the interior, and I do think Rome can match up in the trenches defensively. I think this is close in the first half, then Anchorage just keeps piling on against a horrendous gameplan and pulls away.

I mean you can vote how you want but I'll address a couple things

1.  Swift has 200 yards rushing in two months.  I don't get your befuddlement.   For wanting to get rbs involved in the passing game, that's where Harris and McKinnon shine..  I also enjoy how you point to the Arizona qb situation as to why Hollywood has struggled but appear unfazed by the improvement of my line over whatever Pittsburgh has at guard and tackle

2.  Isiaah Simmons has been the dime backer for Anchorage every single week in four wide for weeks with Parsons moving to the dline. You can go back and look if you like.  The reason he has less missed tackles is cause they literally use him at corner more often than anywhere else.  If he wants to put Parsons in coverage and not on the line that's a OK with me , that's OK by me.  Every parson blitz is an easy open checkdown to a hole in the zone he's leaving behind

3. Cisco is bailing at the snap to deep cover one shading to Hollywood.   If he wants to attack Marlon Humphrey with Brandon Coooks that's a risk I'll take

4.  I'll disagree chase would annihilate double bracket coverage all game but that's your decision to make

I’m going to have to think about this one. The running success rate on 4 wide receiver formations is borderline nonexistent unless you motion and insert a WR to block a linebacker (see the Rams with Woods). And even then, you’re looking at a lot of trap and outside edge concepts. I’m not sure whether or not Najee is that guy or how they plan on blocking the Mike at all.

On the flip side, I need to reread Anchorage’s gameplan.

1. Swift is the better receiving back and, more importantly, more explosive than Harris. The two backs behind Harris in Pittsburgh are both averaging nearly a yard per carry more than him, which looks even worse for Harris given his heavy involved in the passing game there. I liked Harris coming out of college, but it’s impossible to overlook the reality that he offers your offense nothing in this game. You are already using the passing game as an extension of the run; what you need is dynamic play at RB against the very athletic second level of Anchorage, IMO.

2. Simmons has fewer missed tackles, both raw and per play, than some corners. And Arizona has been playing him there due to a lack of CB talent as much as anything. This narrative you’re pushing isn’t backed up by anything substantial.

3. He’s not getting back deep in time to help with either of those receivers. All it takes is a step and Cooks is in the endzone. If you are going to consistently put two corners on islands against deep threats, they are going to get burned eventually with a QB like Burrow throwing at them.

4. He will when it’s DaRon Bland and Malik Hooker.

The nail in the coffin to me for me was he wasn't getting more snaps when Jamaal Williams got hurt this week.  I think he's not healthy and the team clearly thinks that too unless you have a super high opinion of Justin Jackson to explain why he was getting the same amount of snaps the past couple weeks.

Najee Harris yards before contact is 2.0 which puts him 42nd out of 45 RB who had enough carries to qualify.  I'm not out here saying he's had a studly year but I think an increased offensive line talent would do his numbers wonders

I'm going to assume you are unaware that Cisco has the same 40 time as Hollywood and Cooks so I will forgive that statement as ignorance instead of chosen stupidity

We'll agree to disagree on Simmons and the double team

I was going to keep quiet in this thread but this... where is this documented? Cooks ran a 4.33 at the combine. Cisco did not run at the combine or his pro day. So where is this official time listed?

Since then Cisco has become a two time All-ACC selection as well as winning ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year. He has also been included in Bruce Feldman’s Freak list as he can supposedly complete the shuttle in 4.1s, run a 4.33s 40 yard dash and bench press 225 Lbs 17 times!

Cisco says he was clocked at that at Syracuse also so I tend to believe him to be honest.  No reason for him to keep up the act after he got drafted.  After watching him play, he looks it this year

A lot of guys do this about their speed. It’s a pride thing. And they may have timed him at that. Those times are often off more than they are accurate. So to say he has the same 40 time as Cooks which was verified at the combine is reaching. I will leave it at that.
