Interesting article on the $$ value of tight ends compared to what value they provide on the field.

I'm starting to warm up to Michael Mayer at 18 or a slight trade down. Maybe Hock wasn't worth his money, but if Mayer is the blocker he's chalked up to be, he could be worth it.

That's what we thought we were getting with Hock. If we were to go that route, I'd be taking Darnell Washington over Mayer. He's shown to be quite athletic and we know what he is as a blocker - absolutely dominant.

They're 1a and 1b to me, would welcome either of them.

  • OFFENSIVE SNAPS: 890 vs 654 = WR's are on the field for 236 snaps more in total than TE's
  • RECEIVING SNAPS: 586 (66.2%)vs 363 (53.9%) = WR's are on the field in a receiving role 222 more snaps (+12.4%) over TE's
  • PASS BLOCK: 1 vs 28 = WR's are on the field for 27 snaps less than a TE in a pass blocking role (-4.4%)
  • RUN BLOCK: 300 (33.2%) vs 254 (39.1%) = WR's are on the field for run blocking for 46 more snaps than TE's yet were -5.9% in overall percentage of snaps.

WR's are just on the field that much more overall as a potential target instead of being in a blocking role. They're even involved as much or more in blocking as a TE (despite being a lower %).

Interesting stats, thanks for looking at that.

I think the value is in terms of how defenses are trending and also the money you pay a WR compared to TE vs the snap difference.

I think for our team, run blocking is pretty important. That's why Mayer and Washington are the tops for me.

  • Mayer - 82.1 RBLK
  • Washington - 81.3 RBLK

  • Washington - 78.4 PBLK
  • Mayer - 52.8 PBLK

  • Mayer - 91.6 RECV

Mayer has been comped to Heath Miller and Washington to Mercedes Lewis. Both good players with long careers. I'd take either of those on the team.

Just compare them pushing the sled at the combine, Mayer wasn't bad at all but Washington killed that poor sled.
