More Lane! Maybe this also helps with his retirement talk? Gonna be hard to walk away from that money

Lane could hang it up at any moment. He’s struggled mentally. Can’t seem to believe anything other than his depression/stability would be paramount. He’s got enough money. But sometimes you wake up and the joy is gone. Howie’s annual restructuring of Lane is playing with fire because of the untenable situation of his passion for the game. But he’s dug out of more recently. I’m sure it’s talked about behind closed doors.

What happens to the contract if someone retires?

He said he plans to play 2 more seasons, then hang it up, as long as the body is willing. Can't remember if it was Bussin with the Boys or the Kelce Pod or Pat Mac show, but he said that on one of them fairly recently.

Yea depends on the structure. From what I understand, the team is off the hook for the salary portion but the dead money is still owed. It makes sense. The dead money, essentially, is money already paid out in a signing bonus, spread out through the contract. So when guys restructure mostly it’s just converting salary into bonuses that can both lower their salary number and give the team the flexibility to move that money out to contract years. Lane gets a nice check(bonus), though sometimes the game checks (salary) suffer, and the team gets current year cap relief. Obviously, there’s merits and detractions from the strategy already well pointed out in this forum. But to answer the question, I believe the team is on the hook for whatever bonus money they stretch out through terms of the deal. But the salary is taken away from the teams obligation. Not that the player is receiving money still. Just that the cap has to reflect money spent to that person in previous years. Basically paying money to a player they already paid but not reflected in that cap yet. Thus, the borrowing from future cap years discussions ongoing.

Remember he said it like at an event in season first.

Wonder if it’ll just be full stop or he’ll take the Kelce approach at that point.

Thank you for this. Makes more sense now. Seeing Brandon Brooks on our salary cap for a few seasons was odd but now it makes sense.

Yeah I recall hearing that too. Maybe money talks and we can squeeze an extra year out of him or he gets the Kelce feels. Everyone loves Hurts so maybe
