Notes

  • Jake Browning could very well just be a placeholder spot until we sign a veteran backup QB, but for now, he's the only QB on the roster
  • I think Evans gets cut and they go light at RB with a couple stashed on the practice squad.
  • I think Mixon will be the clear RB1 to start the season, but Brown will get at least Perine level of reps that he was getting later in 2022.  I expect Brown to get 6-8 touches a game early in the season, with a chance to prove himself for more.
  • I think Stanley Morgan has at least one more year on the roster as a special teams ace so they aren't relying too heavily on rookies on special teams, Trent Taylor is the odd man out
  • I won't be shocked if bring in another veteran TE to battle it out with Asiasi for TE3 in camp, but I do think we only keep 3 there since we will be heavy at WR with 7
  • I think we see a lot of churn with Prince, Smith, Adeniji, and Collins all gone.  I wouldn't be shocked if Collins hung around on the PUP to start the season as injury insurance.  By everything being said, he doesn't seem to be in the plans.
  • I really would have liked one more IOL in the draft, so maybe they'll bring in another FA there.  I wouldn't count out Jaxson Kirkland from bumping off Scharping.  I think they only keep 5 IOL since Carman can bump inside if needed as well.
  • Jonah's in contract year, he'll be here and on the right side playing for his next deal from someone else.  I don't think he'll be a distraction.
  • DE5 is going to be a battle between Sample and Basham, and I do think they'll keep 10 DL this year.  Tufele is likely the odd man out if they only keep 9.
  • Running back the exact same LB room as last year.
  • Ivey could end up being a practice squad guy, he'll be in a battle Jalen Davis, Marvin Tell, and Allan George for CB6. The winner of that battle is likely who looks best on special teams.
  • I think we go heavy at DB this year with 11, although S5 is Michael Thomas as purely a special teamer.
  • While I think Nick Scott gets the early nod, I think Jordan Battle will be given the opportunity to win the other starting safety spot.
  • Barring anything crazy, this should be our specialist group for the next several years.
  • By the start of training camp I expect extensions to be announced for Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, and Logan Wilson

Camp Battles

  • DE5 - Cam Sample vs Terrell Basham vs Jeffrey Gunter
  • IOL5 - Max Scharping vs Jaxson Kirkland
  • CB6 - DJ Ivey vs Jalen Davis vs Marvin Tell vs Allan George
  • QB2 - Browning vs anyone else in camp who plays QB
  • S2 - Nick Scott vs Jordan Battle

I can put a prediction together later, maybe.

I think my one comment would be that i'm not sure the team is settled at RB and QB quite yet.  Maybe even OL.  I see some moves happening later in the summer.  One example would be Clyde Edwards-Helaire being a prime cut candidate during training camp.  I could see them making a late move to firm up the RB group.

Rapien has his predictions below. Most notably, Jackson Carman cut (or traded). Simien over Browning. Hudson over Asiasi (I like a lot). Ford over Scharping (don't like at all). Dominique Davis cut (bit disappointing). Ivey over George and Jones. Mike Thomas cut.

I really hope Hudson makes the roster too.  He's flashed enough that he should, but that concussion didn't help his case.  I hope he doesn't end up on the PS.

Really surprised that Wilcox made it over Hudson.  Must have been a Darren Simmons selection is my only thought, because i still don't think i've ever seen Wilcox play an offensive snap.

Not many other surprises on cutdown day other than Stanley Morgan not making it.  But i think he'll get re-signed after some other shuffling of IR players and what not.

I'm not.  Hudson is 29 (yeah, I didn't realize that either) and is one dimensional.  he can catch, but can't block or play special teams.  Wilcox does both.  I would like to think he sticks around on the PS in case we need to call him up.

I want to believe Stanley Morgan has a handshake deal to come back after someone like Ford goes to IR (concussion), because I can't see Simmons being OK with two new gunners on punt coverage (Flowers left in off season).

I guess I'm kinda surprised that Johnson got cut.  I thought they might try to sneak him in then move Ossai to IR today and give the high ankle sprain plenty of time to rest.  At worst, I hope they get Johnson, Dominique Davis and maybe Gunter to the practice squad.

I hope Lassiter and Jackson make it back at WR.  Whichever RB was getting all of the 4th quarter looks should be there as well.

Interested to see whether they keep Siemian as the PS QB, or chase a cut player like Grier or Fromm.

I know it isn't a normal thing, but if Chrisman doesn't get claimed, I think I would put him on the PS as well.  He's a great guy to root for, but isn't always at his best when you need him the most (last punt of AFCCG?).
