Lancaster Offense:

New Orleans presents a formidable challenge on both offense and defense. We believe that the key to beating them will be to use a ball control offense to grind out their defense and limit their ability to score on offense. We want to utilize our talented stable of running backs, as well as our running threat at quarterback, to attack the New Orleans defense and create sustained drives that end in scores.

We are giving the start at running back to Jahmyr Gibbs this week but expect David Montgomery and Tyler Allgeier to get plenty of work as well. Expect a roughly 40-30-30 snap split for Gibbs, Montgomery, and Allgeier respectively. We also want to highlight Jalen Hurts as a runner this week as well. We want to use a lot of RPOs and even some designed QB runs. With Gibbs especially we want to focus on some outside runs to highlight his speed and give him more space to get into gear and make people miss. Montgomery and Allgeier will be utilized between the tackles more but with the outside runs in their bag as well. We think if we can get the ball past the talented New Orleans defensive line, we can have success rushing against the back seven. We will also this week include some 2 running back shotgun looks occasionally after running it as our base last week. Having three rushing threats in the same backfield gives us some great opportunity for misdirection.

In the passing game, we are going to be keeping it simple and looking for quick shots and throws that will keep the chain and clock moving. As we establish our rushing attack, this will also help set up plenty of play action looks for us which should open up the passing attack a bit. We of course will take a few deep shots but we mainly want to target the short and intermediate parts of the field to keep the ball moving and get the ball out of Hurts’ hands quickly. In the short parts of the field we want to have some pick plays, which we think will be particularly successful against a cover 1 look if that’s what New Orleans runs. We want to really feature Gibbs as a passing weapon by throwing some screens to him and also splitting him out to the slot where he can have more room to use his explosive abilities. We think Gibbs can be a true difference maker for our offense as a runner and as a receiver.

Lancaster Defense:

The weapons that New Orleans has on offense are going to give defenses headaches all season. The vulnerability that we want to attack this week is their offensive line and we are helped in this by the fact that Taylor Decker is going to be out. We want to show different coverage looks and create pressure on Josh Allen and force him into quick decisions, where hopefully we can capitalize and create turnovers. We may not be able to completely shut down all of the weapons New Orleans has to offer but we think that by creating a few turnovers and controlling the clock on offense, we can limit their scoring.

We are going to mix up our coverages throughout the day but we will almost always show a 2 high safety look. Starting from this same look but doing different things will limit Allen’s ability to make pre-snap reads and force him into making quicker decisions when the bullets are flying. We will likely play a roughly even split of man and zone coverage looks. In zone coverage, we can go cover 3, 4, or 5 depending on the situation. When we go to cover 3, either safety can come down or play high.

When we play man coverage out of these looks, we will largely be using cover 1 robber coverages where either one of our safeties can come up as the robber. In these man coverage looks, Jaire Alexander will cover DJ Moore, Tyrique Stevenson will cover DeAndre Hopkins, and JC Jackson will cover Deebo Samuel. If Hopkins is out, then Stevenson will take Deebo Samuel and Jackson will cover Curtis Samuel. Willie Gay Jr. will cover Derrick Henry if he ever comes out as a receiving option. The responsibilities of Fred Warner, Darrick Forrest, and Minkah Fitzpatrick will change in these robber looks. One of Fitzpatrick or Forrest will stay back and play a deep zone. The other will come up and either act as the robber with Fred Warner covering the tight end or the safety will take coverage responsibilities on the tight end with Fred Warner taking the middle zone. All of this plus the various zone looks we can throw out should keep Josh Allen guessing and unsure of what coverage he’s seeing until the snap starts.

As far as the pass rush goes, we will blitz a little bit throughout the game just to throw a little extra chaos at Josh Allen, but we really feel like we should be able to get plenty of pressure with just our front 4, especially with the New Orleans offensive line hobbled. We are starting Tedarrell Slaton today to put some extra beef in the middle of the DL to help slow down Derrick Henry, but Justin Madubuike will rotate in plenty with Calais Campbell getting snaps inside as well on obvious passing downs. We aren’t sure exactly who will start at LT for New Orleans this week but if it shakes out with Colton McKivitz at RT, we anticipate TJ Watt to have a huge day. Either way, we think our defensive line should be able to get plenty of pressure on Josh Allen all day and give his weapons less time to get open. We will be rotating plenty with Preston Smith and Ogbo Okoronkwo coming in fresh to attack the tackles as well when Campbell moves inside. We also think we should be able to limit Derrick Henry due to the poor offensive line play. On top of that, we’ll regularly have another safety come up into the box.
