Week 10 MNF GDT : DEN @ BUF

Josh Allen deserves way more scrutiny than he's been getting for sure.   But there are 3 things that Ken Dorsey's done that have made the BUF O more reliant on Josh Allen hero mode:

1.   He's decided that James Cook isn't the workhorse RB, and has used a ton of Latavius Murray.   Murray finally scored last night when Cook got benched, but just to highlight the point:

Cook is by far the better pass-catcher, and more explosive runner.  Fournette was signed mostly because of their concern Lat Murray isn't nearly as effective.   Last night's benching may or may not have been Dorsey, so that's not fair to lay it at his feet (but if it was, it was costly).

2.   He's gone mega pass-happy, and also has gone away from using Josh Allen in designed runs.    Even if you want to debate Cook's usage, going away from Josh Allen runs and the run game in general even when it's been effective, only emphasizes the pass game reliance.

3.   Before Dawson Knox got hurt, he used 12 formation and Knox snap count usage which put Dalton Kincaid on the bench.   Kincaid's breakout coinciding with Knox going to IR shows how flawed that thinking was (along with Khalil Shakir showing he could actually play as their 3rd WR).    More Dawson Knox and less Dalton Kincaid / Khalil Shakir was all Ken Dorsey.

Now, to be clear - you're absolutely correct that Josh Allen's TO's are basically his.   He owns almost all of them (Gabe Davis, you sucked on that 1st pick lol).   But it's also fair to say Ken Dorsey isn't a good OC.   Brian Daboll & Allen were a great combo together - because Daboll also schemed the BUF O to give more balance, even if it was with Josh Allen as a runner.   Still, it's fair to say the 2nd pick to Moreau was ALL Allen.   And he still needs to take what the D gives him.

So in this case, I'd say both statements are true (Josh Allen is creating problems on his own, OC Ken Dorsey isn't good at using the tools he's being given, either, and part of the problem).

The Bills are in real trouble, not just because they're 5-5, but because they lose a lot of tiebreakers....and their D just isn't that good.   It's only because our O is so limited that we didn't put up more than 24 pts last night.   And yes, firing Ken Dorsey doesn't change those issues, nor does it fix Josh Allen on its own.  But it's also a good decision for them too.

So, with all of this being said, did the Broncos make the right decision in 2018 when they passed on him?

Look, this is not a great team. It's not even a good team. What it's not is a bad team. And we've been a bad football team since 2017.

Sean has figured out what he has with this year's group and has been able to coach around it, or maybe coach to whatever its strengths are, and do what he can to mask the weaknesses. While Russ' numbers in terms of efficiency are good, as you guys have pointed out, he is not making plays that QBs on winning teams make.

Russ isn't the guy and no one knows better than Sean. To run that system takes a very sharp QB with great downfield vision and a strong accurate arm. I'll bet Sean drools at the thought of Drake Maye running his system for about the next 15 years.

Payton has fully put the training wheels on Russ. Some of that is Russ’ limitations, some of that is desperation to win games which means limiting opportunities for mistakes.  Right now it looks like the directive to Russ is to throw to the first read if it’s there and if it’s not, either take off to run or to extend the play.

Russ can still make the most insanely difficult plays, though not as consistently. But he can’t make the layups, and it’s so hard to build an offense without those basic rhythm/timing throws.
