or that his agent is going to do his due diligence and talk to other teams once they get their coaching staffs in place. doesn't really have to mean anything more than that.

But what fun is taking things at face value?

Do we think the Vikings will consider retaining Cousins, after the $28M dead cap “is locked” on their 2024 books? That’s a Vikings cap accounting problem, not a Cousins problem.

It’s unlikely but not impossible. It just makes for a differently structured contract, but probably doesn’t affect the cap numbers

But Cousins and the Vikings were never going to have talks before March, anyways. When everyone is in Indianapolis.

exactly. it's the immediacy of the situation, the clock ticking to the final hours, that will produce the final result.

Recent quote from Kirk, where he says “we’re waiting till first couple of weeks in March to have those conservations (with other teams as the final head coaches vacancies are filled)”

sounds like the eye is on other teams, at least based on what he saying

I didn't read that much into it. It sounds like he's just waiting until March for anything concrete to start happening, like any other free agent.

I guess I'm just not that impressionable!

It’s also that at the NFL combine, or the unofficial NFL convention, both sides are going to get a much clearer view of what the other options are going to be.

Cousins’ agent is going to get a good sense of who’s interested, and at what price range. Just like when he signed with the Vikings.

And the Vikings, as well as other teams, are going to get to interview the QB prospects and know whether or not they meet someone they are willing to make a trade for. And which teams will likely be interested in trading.

These conversations just aren’t happening now because it’s blatantly against the rules. But we all know that at the combine when everyone is in one location, the work arounds to the rules happen.

Sure, other conversations between Cousins and other teams are against the rules now, but there is no rule against the Vikings and Cousins having conversations.  It seems as if Cousins is open to hearing what other teams have to say.  Not only that, but he wants to hear what other teams have to say before choosing his next team.

You can't blame Cousins for that.  It is a good thing to do.  It does fly in the face of suggestions that Cousins primary interest is staying with Minnesota. Throughout his career, Cousins has always looked out first for number one and done what he felt was in his best interest.  I have to believe that he'll be doing that again.  I should hope nobody blames him for that.  It isn't something he should be ashamed of.

Cousins talking to other teams to gauge interest and salary offers from them doesn't preclude MN being his #1 choice though still.

as you write, it's just good business for him to see all the offers and interest.

Sure it’s good business for him to see all offers and interests. But a lay person would realize if there was truly mutual interest at whatever price, Cousins and Minny would be working on a deal. Not Cousins telling the media, basically I’m chilling at home and rehabbing, waiting a couple weeks into March to see what everyone’s best offer is and find out where I’m going.

That doesn't happen at this time of year.  It never does, because the front office is working the scouting beat right now, with the Senior Bowl and the Shrine Bowl and the agents are working with their new college clients.  There just isn't the time.  That's why the Scouting Combine is where that happens.

The window for Vikings and Cousins to talk to start working to get a deal done opened in January

The window can open, but no one's standing on either side talking..and the pie is still waiting to come out of the oven...
