Kirk Cousins ends run with Vikings, signs with ATL (p.36)

let's have a new thread to discuss developments and opinions on Kirk Cousins from his injury on. we can start with this:

Nearly two months into his recovery from his Nov. 1 operation on his torn right Achilles, Cousins is ahead of the schedule the Vikings' medical staff set for him, spending mornings at the team facility before afternoon and evening sessions with his bodywork specialist Chad Cook. Dr. Chris Coetzee, the foot and ankle specialist who performed Cousins surgery in Eagan, glowed about the quarterback's progress during a six-week checkup last week, Cook said.

Cook: "He was absolutely thrilled with how well Kirk was doing, how strong his tendon is, ligaments around the area and how well his muscles are firing already. We're well ahead of the curve as far as where we need to be right now, so we're all excited about that."

Cousins is walking with a heel lift in his shoe, for now, but will progress to walking barefoot and could be jogging by the end of January. If he were to return from the injury in six or seven months, as Vikings running back Cam Akers did in 2022, he could be on the field for portions of organized team activities in May or mandatory minicamp in June.

At the outset of his rehab, Cousins said, doctors told him they wanted his progress to resemble the stock market, where fluctuations between growth and setbacks were normal and acceptable as long as he was trending in the right direction. Through seven weeks, though, Cousins said he's felt "it's been a bull market.

Cousins: "I've been surprised at how every day I feel like I'm doing something better and better and better. So that's been encouraging psychologically. You're reminded that you're moving in the right direction, almost on a daily basis. I think once I get far enough along where my gains are just going to be the field, you probably don't notice that as much. But in the early stages, you know, it's, 'Oh, I walk to the to the shower better. I can walk into work differently. I can go up on my toes now.' Like, basic stuff: 'I can drive a car now.' There are all these reminders of how you're getting better."

During a normal season, Cook said, much of his job is to help Cousins recover from the hits he took in the previous game and get his body ready for the next one. They quickly realized that with fresh sets of weekly ailments, they could use Cousins' Achilles rehab to help other parts of his body improve.

Cook: "It just allows us to say, 'OK, if he's not practicing and training every day, let's take a look at all the hard hits, all the old microtraumas that have happened over the last couple of years.' Whether it's around his ribs, whether it's around the rest of his body, let's address as many of those things and clean them up as we can, so that when he's moving 100 percent and coming back to full speed to get ready for next season, we're not trying to do those in a one- or two-month window."

If they sign him, I want them trying to win while he's here.

I want them doing both. If they resign him they are clearly trying to win, but they should be finding a successor no matter what.

A sustained window should be the goal, imo.

They're too short on talent on defense to win if they start dealing up. Going to cost a lot to get the third QB.....imo. I'm ok drafting a QB where they'll pick, but not giving up assets. The window with Kirk is two years, dealing two high picks to move up makes it very hard to fill holes.

sounds like JJ McCarthy then. or a small tradeup should his value rise over the next few months.

Not as hard as you’d think with the cap space they have in that window.

i think Kwesi has done a nice job setting them up for most scenarios.

We'll just disagree they can sign JJ, Hunter, and cousins, and fix the defense if they don't have any high picks this year on defense, and no first next year.... I'm ok disagreei

I'm good with signing him. I'm good with trading up, drafting a QB, and moving on.

I’m seeing it as a minimum two year commitment starting next year.

Year 1: This coming offseason sign Kirk, Hunter and Jefferson, get a RB and essentially put all other resources into the defense. Build around Kirk. Develop Hall as QB2.

Year 2: Next offseason go all in for a QB of the future let them sit for a year.

Just don’t know how you commit to Kirk in 2024 and find his replacement. The defense needs help even though they’ve generally been good this year, but it isn’t enough.

If a good QB falls into your lap, sure pull the trigger.

Kansas City traded up for Mahomes and still found success with Alex Smith starting.

Green Bay traded up for Love and still found success with Aaron Rodgers starting.

Talent on defense is important, but part of that problem can be fixed using Free Agency for now. If there is a QB this team loves in the upcoming draft, you absolutely take him and keep Cousins fully in the loop as far as what the team is doing and their intentions.

Pretty unique for those teams. The Packers were leaning on their HOF QB to carry the load which ultimately led to his desire to seek a new team.

As for the Chiefs, they were a playoff team with Smith. As of now the Vikings aren’t and have only one a single playoff game since Kirk’s arrival.

if we ignore the defense, I’d expect having to chase 30 points against most good teams. Leaning on Flores helped make the defense serviceable to very good in some stretches. There’s a lot of room for improvement.
