Hardest RB's to Bring Down?

GamedayGuru

Recommended Posts

Sort of an open to interpretation type question. Barry Sanders was really hard to bring down, so was Earl Campbell - just for different reasons.

I immediately thought of power backs and guys that break tackles even with a defender making solid contact. Fournette and Hunt came to mind immediately. Bell, especially when he’s gets in one of those “playing angry” zones that he has been in lately (especially vs Cincy).

Shady and Kamara will juke you out of your shoes and eat more contact than you’d think for guys that quick/of that size. Haven’t watched enough of Duke Johnson to really comment. Dion Lewis is very shifty and been taking contact better than usual - his injury history and following pitch count keep him out of the conversation though.

I think Gurley and Freeman are good balances of guys that can make you miss - especially in the open field - and also move the pile. David Johnson and Zeke too, when they’re on the field.

Kamara, Gurley, Bell, Hunt to name a few. Lynch as well. He was 3rd in the league in broken tackles, per touch, which someone alluded to. Have never understood the hate for him this year.

He finished the season 8th in total BT's and 5th in BT per touch amongst all players with at least 200 touches.

Antonio Brown is just insane. I feel like other receivers get compared to Brown only because we are so bored with Brown’s ridiculousness.

My mistake then. Still pretty damn impressive.

Oh you weren't wrong at all man. Up until week 15 he was 3rd in the league per touch. I only quoted you with his numbers because I just figured you would wanna see how he fared for the entire season. ;)

I love me some Marshawn. People have always knocked him for not being as versatile as other backs and call him a one-trick pony for a power back and they're not completely wrong in that. But if he's only a one-trick pony....then he's one of the best one-trick ponies in the league over the last 6-8 years then.

Lynch and AP are the last of a dying breed. As the league has shifted more and more into the passing age, it's become almost a necessity for RB's to be a reliable target option out of the back field in order to even get the chance to be a 3 down back.

There is also only 4 guys to compare him with in this data set as there was only 5 100+ reception receivers. Brown is good after the catch no doubt, but it'd be interesting to see how he matches up with a bigger group.

It's also interesting that Brown is just 14th in YAC with 471 yards on 101 touches. Golden Tate is 4th overall (best among WRs) with 671 yards on 92 touches, Landry 7th with 511/112 and Julio 9th with 504/88.

https://www.foxsports.com/nfl/stats?season=2017&week=100&category=RECEIVING&opp=0&sort=5&qualified=1&sortOrder=0

So if we're going to trust both sources, Brown only gets 16 yards per broken tackle, while Landry goes for 34 and Fitz collected 416 yards from just 8 broken tackles, good for 52 yards/broken tacke which seems a bit absurd.

Judging by the stats - and not having seen much of Lions this year - Tate has some impressive stats. 1001 receiving yards, 671 YAC with a 77% catch rate from 120 targets.

There is also only 4 guys to compare him with in this data set as there was only 5 100+ reception receivers. Brown is good after the catch no doubt, but it'd be interesting to see how he matches up with a bigger group.

In this aspect, he fares very well in comparison to both his position league wide and his contemporaries. In fact, it's borderline not even worth debating. Not that broken tackles are a stat that should be used to compare WR's anyhow given that it only carries a very small amount of importance to the position but Brown has accomplished so much already that this is just another small piece of notch added to his already established resume.

I really don't think most people realize just how good he truly is. It's slowly coming to the point that it's not even fair to compare him to other WR's. It's seriously reaching that JJ Watt type level.....if it hasn't already.

1) Your trying to directly correlate YAC to broken tackles which is a no-no for many different reasons.

2) Landry and Tate are no where near Brown's level as a whole so even being better in this aspect carries no weight at all and seems like your reaching in order to discredit Brown for whatever reason.

Now, you're not wrong about about Landry and Tate. They both do very well in shaking off tackles given their style and have the most broken tackles among all WR's over the last 3 years combined(84 and 81, respectively). However, Brown is 4th in this category with 66 and Tate's 294 tocuhes compared to Brown's 349 makes quite a significant difference.

Julio and Fitz.....not so much. Not that Julio is "bad" but his 48 total and lower 15.58% in 46 games over the last 3 years on 308 touches does not compare to Brown. Fitz isn't even close as he only has EXACTLY half as many BT's(33) as Brown does on only 22 less touches. However, broken tackles are not a stat that would fit Fitz's style at this point in his career anyhow, nor his role and assignments on the Cardinals offense either.
