6.203 - Will Reichard, K, Alabama - #46

Recommended Posts

Overview

Highly experienced in high-level matchups inside the SEC and in the College Football Playoff. Reichard kicks with consistent lift. He's as close to automatic as you will find under 40 yards and can make 50-plus yard kicks with a high success rate but has average leg strength by the standards of today's NFL. Reichard needs to prove he can plant a higher percentage of kickoffs as touchbacks, but his accuracy and talent should give him a strong chance at being drafted in the middle rounds and becoming a starting NFL kicker.

Strengths

  • Connected on more than 95 percent of kicks under 40 yards over the last four years.
  • Consistent ball striker with end-over-end ball flight.
  • Gets immediate lift off the foot.
  • Has kicked in several high-leverage games.
  • Made more than 70 percent of his 50-plus-yard field goals during career.

Weaknesses

  • Missed potential game-winner from 50 in loss to Tennessee in 2022.
  • Doesn't hit kicks with booming drive.
  • Needs to improve consistency of kickoff depth in pros.

i think the above was written up before the new kickoff rule changed, because booming them out of the end zone isn't as important now.

welcome aboard, Will!

Nick Saban identified placekickers as comparable to assassins. There are few contexts in which such a comparison would be considered complimentary. The explanation, of course, as the former Bama head coach said, "They've got one shot, they've got to make it count, and that's the mindset they have to have – to focus and be prepared to do it the next time is probably the most important thing."

Will Reichard didn't hit all his shots as the Crimson Tide's primary placekicker for five seasons, but he made enough to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I history with 547 points on 84 field goals and 295 extra points. Last season he was 55-55 on extra point kicks . He finished his Bama career as record-holder for field goals, 50-plus yard field goals (10) and PATs.

He was last season's Southeastern Conference special teams player of the year by league coaches. In addition to his extra point kicks last season, Reichard was 22-25 on field goals:

  • 3-3 inside 30 yards
  • 7-7 on 30-39 yards
  • 7-10 on 40-49
  • 5-5 on 50 yards or more
  • with a long of 52

Moreover, Reichard served as Bama's kickoff man and as the backup punter, which is a plus on his value to a team.

Just now, viking said:

not a fan

you will be when he wins games for us.

think of it this way... what other 6th round guy is likely to be a starter, a potential high end contributor, and even possibly have a 10+ year career?

that's why you draft kickers, and we drafted who the Vikings felt was the nation's best.

and the other top kicker, Karty, goes a few picks later, to the Rams.

EDIT: and the third kicker off the board three picks after the second.

Reichard gets an added advantage of kicking in a dome for half of his games, minimum.

He'd have to be the next Justin Tucker for me to be a fan

Big deal is…. Can he make extra points?

  • Last season he was 55-55 on extra point kicks.
  • 295 PAT's in his college career.

he got plenty of actual game PAT reps, since 'Bama scores so many td's....

this pick used on Reichard (#203) was obtained in the Dallas Turner trade up, correct?

because there is some cyber grousing for the price we paid to trade up and draft Turner, so if Reichard becomes a stud for us then that helps that trade value. considerably.

A native of Hoover, Alabama, Reichard was ranked by ESPN as the nation's best kicker.

The Vikings have now drafted three former Alabama players this weekend, as Reichard joins OLB Dallas Turner (17th overall) and CB Khyree Jackson (108th overall), who played for the Tide in 2021-22 before transferring to Oregon in 2023.

Reichard marks the eighth kicker drafted by Minnesota in franchise history.
